Resilience and Sub-optimal Social Determinants of Health: Fostering Organizational Resilience in the Medical Profession.

The relationship between social determinants of health (SDOH) and resilience has been investigated at the individual level and, to some extent, at the community level. The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the necessity for organizational resilience in the United States. The US public health and health care system began the lengthy process of identifying the resiliency needs of its workforce that expand beyond disaster preparedness. The purpose of this article is to describe the relationship between resilience and SDOH and how medical training can infuse resiliency within

Prevalence and predictors of self-medication to prevent or treat COVID-19 among undergraduate students in Southern Brazil.

Self-medication (SM) is the practice of consuming medicines without a prescription. Despite being a potentially dangerous action, SM is practiced globally and has been highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to evaluate SM for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19 and the factors associated with this practice among undergraduate students in Southern Brazil. A cross-sectional study was conducted between July and November 2020 using an electronic questionnaire to collect information about the practice of SM and the associated sociodemographic characteristics, health

Clinical setting influences patterns of interaction between osteoporosis patient and physician.

The importance of healthy behavior for bone health, as well as low adherence to anti-osteoporosis medication are well-described problems. Both, lifestyle habits and compliance with drug-therapy are influenced by the relationship between patients and physicians. We analyzed 152 consecutive doctor-patient interactions conducted in public and private practices specialized in the management of osteoporosis. We recorded the duration of the consultation and the relative length of: (a) Personal and medical history collection, (b) Physical examination, (c) Explanation of the diagnosis and treatment mo

The Effects of Media Reports on Disease Spread and Important Public Health Measurements.

Controlling the spread of influenza to reduce the effects of infection on a population is an important mandate of public health. Mass media reports on an epidemic or pandemic can provide important information to the public, and in turn, can induce positive healthy behaviour practices (i.e., handwashing, social distancing) in the individuals, that will reduce the probability of contracting the disease. Mass media fatigue, however, can dampen these effects. Mathematical models can be used to study the effects of mass media reports on epidemic/pandemic outcomes. In this study we employ a stochast

Deciphering Influence on Social Media: A Comparative Analysis of Influential Account Detection Metrics in the Context of Tobacco Promotion.

Influencer marketing spending in the United States was expected to surpass $6 billion in 2023. This marketing tactic poses a public health threat, as research suggests it has been utilized to undercut decades of public health progress-such as gains made against tobacco use among adolescents. Public health and public opinion researchers need practical tools to capture influential accounts on social media. Utilizing X (formerly Twitter) little cigar and cigarillo (LCC) data, we compared seven influential account detection metrics to help clarify our understanding of the functions of existing met

Perceptions and practices of mosquito-borne diseases in Alabama - is concern where it should be?

BACKGROUND: The Gulf Coast of the United States is home to mosquito vectors that may spread disease causing pathogens, and environmental conditions that are ideal for the sustained transmission of mosquito-borne pathogens. Understanding public perceptions of mosquito-borne diseases and mosquito prevention strategies is critical for the development of effective vector control strategies and public health interventions. Here, we present a survey conducted in Mobile, Alabama along the Gulf Coast to better understand public perceptions of mosquito-borne diseases, mosquito control activities, and p

MSM and drug use: A latent class analysis of drug use and related sexual risk behaviors.

This study examined patterns of drug use among gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) to identify sub-categories of men whose drug use and sexual behavior place them at especially high risk for HIV. A latent class analysis of a sample of MSM yielded a four-class model with two distinct high drug use sub-groups: one whose drug use concentrated on "sex-drugs" (SDU); and a distinct polydrug use class that showed higher probabilities of using all other drugs assessed. Comparative follow-up analyses indicated the SDU group was also more likely to engage in particular potentially high-ris

Noncommunicable diseases: current status of major modifiable risk factors in Korea.

A noncommunicable disease (NCD) is a medical condition or disease that is by definition non-infectious and non-transmissible among people. Currently, NCDs are the leading causes of death and disease burden worldwide. The four main types of NCDs, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, and diabetes, result in more than 30 million deaths annually. To reduce the burden of NCDs on global health, current public health actions stress the importance of preventing, detecting, and correcting modifiable risk factors; controlling major modifiable risk factors has been shown to eff

Sex-selective abortion in Nepal: a qualitative study of health workers' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Sex-selective abortion is expressly prohibited in Nepal, but limited evidence suggests that it occurs nevertheless. Providers' perspectives on sex-selective abortion were examined as part of a larger study on legal abortion in the public sector in Nepal. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with health care providers and administrators providing abortion services at four major hospitals (n = 35), two in the Kathmandu Valley and two in outlying rural areas. A grounded theory approach was used to code interview transcripts and to identify themes in the data. RESULTS: Most pr

Psychological and social predictors of motorcycle use by young adult males in New Zealand.

Motorcycle riding is a significant cause of serious injuries to young males. Little is known about the psychological and social characteristics of these riders, despite such knowledge being potentially important for the targeting of appropriate injury prevention interventions. Using problem-behaviour theory to broadly guide and structure the research, the present study focused on identifying predictors of motorcycle riding. Previous research investigating differences between riders and non-riders has tended to be inconclusive, methodologically limited, and lacking in explicit theoretical found
