BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is one of the most common skin disorders. However, the etiology of vitiligo is still unknown. Current hypotheses discuss autoimmune, autotoxic and neuronal mechanisms. Here we report the case of radiation-induced depigmentation of the skin of a patient with Hodgkin's disease and 25-year history of vitiligo.
PATIENT AND METHOD: We compared possible differences in skin color, skin moisture, microcirculation and skin elasticity between normal skin and skin exhibiting persistent depigmentation in a 37-year-old patient 40 months after completion of external beam radiotherapy.

A new extended external oblique musculocutaneous flap utilized in the reconstruction of chest-wall defects is described. The flap is drawn as a V-Y rotation flap on the ipsilateral abdominal wall. Angiosarcoma arising in the breast is a very rare malignancy. Of the small number of reported cases, most arose in the breast after breast irradiation. A case is reported of angiosarcoma arising in the breast more than 7 years after lumpectomy and breast irradiation for carcinoma of the breast. The initial appearance was very similar to the changes of late radiation dermatitis and the true nature of the malignant lesion was not known for 23 months.

Generalized cutaneous reactions in association with radiotherapy have in the past been grouped into erythema multiforme (EM) and erythema multiforme-like reactions, the latter being reactions that do not strictly fit the accepted clinical and/or histological criteria for EM, yet have similar findings or presentations. Though usually benign and self-limiting, the progression to Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a potentially fatal form of erythema multiforme, has been reported. Presented here is a case study of a less severe radiation-induced erythema-like reaction.

The authors report the case of a 64-year-old female with a pemphigus vulgaris that relapsed on her left cheek following X-irradiation. The lesion developed not only on the irradiated area but also along a linear streak. Radiation damage after combined tumor therapy may involve skin, subcutaneous tissue, nerves, bones and viscera. Ulceration and subsequent infection can result in life-threatening conditions. The interaction between hyperthermia and X irradiation in the expression of injury to skin was investigated in the tail of adult mice. The X-ray treatments when given alone resulted in skin reactions which ranged in severity from "no observable gross injury" to "moist desquamation over most of the tail," the peak reaction occurring at approximately 20 days.
