Reconstruction of calcaneal skeletal defects caused by trauma.

Since 1976, we have treated displaced intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus by open reduction through a lateral approach, temporary percutaneous fixation, and bone grafting. We assessed the results after a mean follow-up time of 98.9 (SD = 53) months in 30 patients with 35 fractures. In this report we review, clinically and radiologically, 35 fractures in 30 patients (five bilateral). Autografts was used in five cases (five patients) with an average follow-up of 145 months (SD = 43.7). Allografts were used in 19 cases (16 patients) with an average follow-up of 124 months (SD = 31.2), and

OPerative versus non-opERAtive management of isolated ULNAr diaphyseal fractures (OPERA-Ulna): protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

AIMS: Isolated fractures of the ulnar diaphysis are uncommon, occurring at a rate of 0.02 to 0.04 per 1,000 cases. Despite their infrequency, these fractures commonly give rise to complications, such as nonunion, limited forearm pronation and supination, restricted elbow range of motion, radioulnar synostosis, and prolonged pain. Treatment options for this injury remain a topic of debate, with limited research available and no consensus on the optimal approach. Therefore, this trial aims to compare clinical, radiological, and functional outcomes of two treatment methods: open reduction and int

Health-related quality of life in patients undergoing cervico-thoracic osteotomies for fixed cervico-thoracic kyphosis in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

PURPOSE: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) can result in severe cervico-thoracic kyphotic deformity (CTKD). Few studies have addressed the relationship between cervico-thoracic osteotomies in AS and health-related quality of life scores. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of cervico-thoracic osteotomy (CTO) on improving quality of life for patients with fixed CTKD. METHODS: A database of all patients who underwent a CTO for CTKD in patients with AS was created. Data entered into the database consisted of patients' demographics and comorbidities, as well as surgical, clinical and radiol

Resurgence of Progressive Massive Fibrosis in Coal Miners - Eastern Kentucky, 2016.

Coal workers' pneumoconiosis, also known as "black lung disease," is an occupational lung disease caused by overexposure to respirable coal mine dust. Inhaled dust leads to inflammation and fibrosis in the lungs, and coal workers' pneumoconiosis can be a debilitating disease. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Coal Act),* amended in 1977, established dust limits for U.S. coal mines and created the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)-administered Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program with the goal of reducing the incidence of coal workers' pneumoc

Pneumoconiosis and work-related health complaints in Turkish dental laboratory workers.

Dental technicians make the missing tooth and complementary prosthesis and bridges according to the dentist's measurements. They use various materials including silica. Exposure to these materials increases the multi-systemic health problems in addition to respiratory health problems related with work. We planned to evaluate the work history, working conditions and frequency of health problems including pneumoconiosis. Two hundred and fourteen cases in total from 9 workplaces were evaluated. A face to face questionnaire was used to determine the demographic features of workers and standard che

Time-integrated radiation risk metrics and interpopulation variability of survival.

Task Group 115 of the International Commission on Radiological Protection is focusing on mission-related exposures to space radiation and concomitant health risks for space crew members including, among others, risk of cancer development. Uncertainties in cumulative radiation risk estimates come from the stochastic nature of the considered health outcome (i.e., cancer), uncertainties of statistical inference and model parameters, unknown secular trends used for projections of population statistics and unknown variability of survival properties between individuals or population groups. The vari

Pulp treatment for extensive decay in primary teeth.

BACKGROUND: In children, dental caries is among the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide. Pulp interventions are indicated for extensive tooth decay. Depending on the severity of the disease, three pulp treatment techniques are available: direct pulp capping, pulpotomy and pulpectomy. After treatment, the cavity is filled with a medicament. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2003. The previous review found insufficient evidence regarding the relative efficacy of these interventions, combining one pulp treatment technique and one medicament. OBJECTIVES: To assess the

Evidence on the Utility of Artificial Intelligence in the Interpretation of Diagnostic Radiological Images in Low and Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Access to diagnostic imaging in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is limited by scarce equipment, geographic barriers, weak digital infrastructure, and shortages of trained personnel. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool to mitigate these gaps by improving diagnostic accuracy, assisting non-specialist health workers, and optimizing workflows. This scoping review aimed to synthesize current evidence on the use of AI for interpreting radiological diagnostic images in LMICs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scoping review was conducted in July 202

A Novel Anthropometric Phantom for Rapid Radiological Triage: A Quick Sort Triage Solution.

Rapidly identifying individuals who have received internal radiation exposure above action guidelines is crucial for mitigating health risks and addressing public concerns immediately following a radiological event involving the dispersal of radioactive materials. This study describes a novel triage method using a conventional Geiger-Mueller (GM) detector to select those individuals from the large group of persons who may have received an intake of radioactive material at levels corresponding to one Clinical Decision Guide (CDG). The triage method involves placing a portable GM detector agains

Clinical Significance of Radiologic Improvement Following Single-Level Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion With Percutaneous Pedicle Screw Fixation.

Indirect decompression using oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) improves spinal canal dimensions by reducing spondylolisthesis and restoring intervertebral disk height in patients with degenerative lumbar diseases. However, the clinical significance of these radiological improvements has not been fully evaluated in the literature. To examine the relationship between the clinical and radiological outcomes following OLIF, the authors prospectively studied 41 patients who underwent single-level OLIF with percutaneous pedicle screw fixation for lumbar degenerative disease, including degenerat

Outcomes of Evans Versus Hintermann Calcaneal Lengthening Osteotomy for Flexible Flatfoot.

BACKGROUND: Evans (E) and Hintermann (H) lateral lengthening calcaneal osteotomies (LLCOTs) are commonly used to correct flexible flatfoot deformities. Both methods are well accepted and produce good clinical results. The aim of this study was to compare the postoperative outcomes of both osteotomies. METHODS: We retrospectively examined 53 patients with flatfoot deformities, who received surgery between October 2008 and March 2014. Seventeen E-LLCOT and 36 H-LLCOT procedures were performed during this time period, with a mean follow-up of 67.7 ± 20.6 and 40 ± 12.9 months, respectively. Data

Tuberculoma Masquerading as a Sixth Cranial Nerve Palsy in a Young Patient: A Case Report.

Tuberculosis is a worldwide health concern with a wide range of clinical manifestations. Rarely, it can involve the central nervous system in the form of tuberculomas. Although cranial nerve palsies or localized neurological signs are the most frequent presentations of tuberculoma, isolated sixth nerve palsy is unusual and rare. We report the case of a 17-year-old female who presented with isolated sixth nerve palsy, an unusual early manifestation of intracranial tuberculoma. We established the diagnosis through clinical, radiological, and laboratory evaluations and successfully managed the pa

Pre-operative Considerations in Adult Mucopolysaccharidosis Patients Planned for Cardiac Intervention.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are rare lysosomal storage diseases characterized by multiorgan involvement and shortened longevity. Due to advances in therapies such as enzyme replacement therapy and haematopoietic stem cell therapy, life expectancy has increased posing newer challenges to patients and health professionals. One such challenge is cardiovascular manifestations of MPS, which can be life limiting and cause reduction in quality of life. Any cardiovascular intervention mandates comprehensive, multi-systemic work-up by specialist teams to optimize outcome. We highlight the importance of

A case of accelerated silicosis.

Silicosis, caused by inhaling dust containing free crystalline silica, typically has a chronic course, with the numbers of silicosis patients declining globally. Much rarer are the acute and subacute forms. Presented is a case of severe subacute (accelerated) silicosis. The condition resulted from ~2 years of very intense exposure without appropriate personal protective equipment while sandblasting. The patient's initial symptoms were progressive cough, dyspnoea and weight loss. Given his occupational history, typical clinical manifestations and radiological findings, an initial diagnosis of a

Pituitary and ovarian abnormalities demonstrated by CT and ultrasound in children with features of the McCune-Albright syndrome.

In a random series of 97 children referred to the National Institutes of Health with a presumptive diagnosis of precocious puberty, eight girls were found to have features of the McCune-Albright syndrome, including fibrous dysplasia of bone and/or skin lesions resembling café au lait spots. Two girls had the classic triad. Radiographic evaluation of these patients included computed tomography of the head and pelvic ultrasound. The pituitary glands were suspicious for abnormality in five of the eight girls. Seven girls underwent pelvic ultrasound, and in all of them the ovaries were considered
