The prostates of 1775 (614 control and 1161 experimental) 2-year-old F344 rats from 12 different carcinogen bioassays conducted by the Bioassay Program of the NCI and the NTP were evaluated histologically. The incidence of prostatic lesions including (atypical) hyperplastic foci, adenomas, and carcinomas was 6.8%. We examined the effects of cisplatin (5 mg/kg BW) on renal function in rats. Three days after administration of cisplatin whole kidney clearance of inulin fell and 24-h urine volume increased. The effect of carbon monoxide (CO) inhalation on plasma levels of uric acid and hypoxanthine in rats was investigated. Exposure to 3% CO caused respiratory arrest within about 2 minutes. The plasma uric acid level of CO-treated rats increased to 157% above that of ether-treated rats. We studied cerebral lesions in the streptozotocin-diabetic rat, an established model of diabetic retinopathy. Passive intestinal permeability has been investigated in rats infected by the nematode, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, by the simultaneous administration of two probe molecules. Experiments using a closed intestinal loop show that there is a significantly increased absorption of lactulose and decreased absorption of mannitol in rats at the 10th to 11th day of infection. Rats were fed carbohydrate-free diets without thiamine. Sucrose was offered separately, either before the thiamine was removed, or when it was removed, or at varying periods after it was removed. The influence of alimentary deficiency of thiamine on the pyruvate metabolism in the liver and blood of rats was investigated.
