The purpose of this study was to determine whether glandular kallikrein in rat pancreas is located in the beta cells of the endocrine pancreas or in the acinar cells of the exocrine pancreas. Kallikrein was measured by radial immunodiffusion and a direct radioimmunoassay in homogenates of pancreas obtained from 1) control rats, 2) rats with pancreatic beta cells selectively destroyed by streptozotocin, and 3) rats with acinar cell atrophy induced by pancreatic duct occlusion. In the rat, renal compensatory hypertrophy (RCH) is enhanced by the administration of ACTH (beta 1-24 corticotrophin) given at a dose of 18 micrograms/100 g. body weight/d. after uninephrectomy. In the rats drinking tap water, the enhancement of RCH by ACTH occurs without any significant change in urinary Na+ excretion. But, in the animals drinking a NaCl solution (9 g/l), ACTH determines a polyuria with hypernatriuria and a more striking increase of RCH positively correlated with the urinary Na+ excretion.

Premedication with PCPA antagonized in rats the anticonvulsant activity of Primidone and of other drugs against seizures evoked by electroshock. Only in the case of Primidone, however, the anticonvulsant activity could not be re-established by increasing the dosage. Our investigations have shown that PCPA caused a strong inhibition of the conversion of Primidone to phenobarbital, both in vivo and in vitro.

The present study reports the effect of dietary selenium deficiency and supplementation on the growth of the transplantable MT-W9B mammary tumor in female Wistar-Furth rats. Supplementation of the diet with 2 ppm of selenium inhibited tumor growth and reduced the final tumor weight by approximately 50% compared to the control rats receiving 0.1 ppm of selenium. The inhibitory response was selective, without inducing any weight loss in the animals. On the other hand, selenium deficiency (less than 0.02 ppm) had no influence on the growth of this tumor.

A radiological study using the conscious rat (n = 23) showed the different putative compartments at the duodenal level. We report here the in vitro pressure-volume-time of two compartments. The first one extended 0 to 1.7 cm +/- 0.3 from the pylorus, while the second one included the junction with the common biliopancreatic duct. Using retinoscopy, we measured the refractive state of 96 eyes of three different strains of rats: albino Sprague-Dawley, Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) with and without inherited retinal dystrophy, and lean and obese varieties of Zucker rats.
