BACKGROUND: Internal carotid artery dissection (ICAD) is a frequent cause of a stroke in young patients. Risk factors which can lead to dissection include neck injury and diseases of the inner wall of the artery. Common symptoms in ICAD are cervical pain and headache, Horner's syndrome, paralysis of the cranial nerves and subsequently cerebral and retinal ischemia. MR angiography in TOF technique and brain MRI in T1- and T2-weighted images, FLAIR and DWI sequences are the method of choice in patients with ICAD but contrast-enhanced multislice computed tomography remains the fastest and the mos

Inverse ocular bobbing (IOB) is an uncommon abnormal eye movement. Its characteristics are slow downward eye movement with rapid upward return, a nadir at the extreme of downgaze position and horizontal roving eye movement. We present a case of IOB associated with cerebral embolism and diabetes insipidus. A 69 year-old right-handed woman was admitted because of a consciousness disturbance. She had been well until November 10, 1983, when she was found dysarthric and left hemiplegic. On admission, she was stuporous. There were conjugate deviation to the right, central left facial and hypoglossal

A case of spinal dumbbell shaped melanotic schwannoma was reported. A 58-year-old housewife had a 3-months history of progressive gait disturbance. She also complained of mild backache and numbness in both legs. Her family history was not remarkable. When examined on admission, October 10, 1982, mild weakness of both legs with spasticity and sensory impairment below the level of T10 dermatome without sacral sparing were evident. Her deep tendon reflexes were hyperactive on both sides and plantar responses were extensor bilaterally. Sphincteric disturbance was not significant. The function of h

A case of head injury is reported because it presented such an unusual symptom as sudden, bilateral complete deafness. An 11-year-old boy was involved in a traffic accident while riding on a bicycle. He was admitted immediately after the accident in semicomatose state. The pupils were isocoric and pupillary light reflex was normal. Conjugate deviation to the right was seen. Oculo-cephalic response was absent. X-rays of his skull showed two linear fractures in the occipital bone. CT scan of the head showed symmetrical ventricular dilatation which was suspected to be a sequela of asphyxia at his

OBJECTIVE: Adults over the age of 65 years with balance disorders are at about twice the risk of falls, compared with those without balance disorders. Falls contribute to about 74% of the proximal femoral fractures commonly seen in the elderly. Since balance disorders are more prevalent in older adults than in younger adults, it is important to deal with balance disorders in older adults to prevent falls and the resulting deterioration in their ADL (activity of daily living). In this study, we investigated the effects of vestibular rehabilitation (VR) and cane use on improving gait and balance

Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) provokes behavioral and cognitive changes. But the study about electrophysiologic findings and managements of rmTBI is limited. In this study, we investigate the effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on rmTBI. Thirty-one Sprague Dawley rats were divided into the following groups: sham, rmTBI, and rmTBI treated by tDCS. Animals received closed head mTBI three consecutive times a day. Anodal tDCS was applied to the left motor cortex. We evaluated the motor-evoked potential (MEP) and the somatosensory-evoked potential (SEP)

Migrant sensory neuritis, which was first proposed by Wartenberg, is very uncommon and only a few case reports have ever been published. We described one case of migrant sensory neuritis and discussed the pathogenesis of this disease. A 44-year-old man noticed numbness in the lateral aspect of the dorsum of the left foot in February 1985. Physically, there was hypoesthesia in the region of left sural nerve with positive Tinel's sign. During the next 4 years, pain, tingling sensation or hypoesthesia appeared in the regions of the right superficial radial nerve, right axillary nerve, left interc

We report a 78-year-old woman who had an onset of convulsion and right hemiparesis at the age 77. She had been well until October 28th of 1990 when she suddenly developed a seizure starting in her right face with secondary generalization. She was admitted to Saitama Kyodo Hospital where neurologic examination revealed confusion with slight right hemiparesis; deep reflexes were exaggerated on the right side; otherwise neurologic examination was unremarkable. Cranial CT scan revealed an iso-density mass in the left motor area with extensive edema extending into left anterior frontal as well as p

INTRODUCTION: Transforaminal epidural steroid injections (TFESI) are commonly performed for the treatment of lumbar herniated nucleus pulposus and lumbosacral radiculopathy. Although rare, documented complications including spinal cord infarction, paraparesis, epidural abscess, paraplegia, and epidural hematoma have been reported. Here, we present a case of perineural hematoma affecting the L4 nerve root resulting in progressive acute-on-chronic lumbar radiculopathy following TFESI.

A 61-year-old woman is presented with a bilateral total ophthalmoplegia as an initial ocular symptom, caused by a midbrain hematoma. She complained of acute headache, nausea, vomiting and bilateral closure of her eyelids. Examination on admission showed meningeal irritation; mild consciousness disturbance; bilateral total ophthalmoplegia; left hemiparesis; ataxia in all extremities, more marked to the left. Computed tomography demonstrated a small hematoma in the midbrain tegmentum. Angiography demonstrated midbrain arteriovenous malformation, and she was treated conservatively. Abduction of b

The lower cranial nerves (CNs) - IX, X, XI, and XII - are affected by lesions of the skull base that impact the hypoglossal canal and jugular foramen in Collet-Sicard Syndrome (CSS), a rare disorder. Loss of posterior tongue taste sensation (IX nerve), paralysis of the vocal cords and difficulty swallowing (resulting from the X nerve), weakness in the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles (due to the XI nerve), and atrophy and weakness of the tongue muscles (caused by the XII nerve) are all signs of this condition. The purpose of this report is to describe a case of squamous cell carcinoma

OBJECTIVES: Standardized assessments of vestibular function primarily focus on the structural integrity of brainstem reflexes. However, patients may report symptoms linked to disruptions in central vestibular processing and integration, mechanisms that remain poorly understood. Emerging evidence suggests that electroencephalography (EEG) can characterize the neural dynamics of central vestibular processing. This exploratory study examines the effects of caloric-induced vestibular stimulation on EEG rhythms to further elucidate neural dynamics and their relationship with lower-order (brainstem

Hypoxia in preterm infants is a clinical condition that has been associated with cognitive and behavioral disturbances for which treatment strategies are strongly required. Melatonin administration following brain insults has been considered a promising therapeutic strategy due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Not surprisingly, it has been extensively studied for preventing disturbances following brain injury. This study evaluated the effects of melatonin on developmental disturbances, memory disruption, and hippocampal cell loss induced by neonatal anoxia in rats. Neonatal Wi

BACKGROUND: A cataract is one of the underlying causes of blindness in animals. Phacoemulsification is the standard procedure in cataract surgery for humans and animals. This procedure has been used to restore vision in cataracts in a variety of animals. However, this technique is difficult in very small animals, such as rodents, due to their small eyes.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 4-year-old male domestic chinchilla was presented with cloudiness in the lenses for 1 month. The ophthalmic examination revealed cataracts (oculus uterque: both eyes). Positive dazzle reflex oculus sinister; left eye (OS)

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a rare autoimmune demyelinating disorder that primarily affects the central nervous system (CNS). It is characterized by an acute inflammatory response targeting the myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. The exact mechanism of ADEM is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve an abnormal immune response that leads to the activation of immune cells and subsequent inflammation within the CNS. This immune-mediated attack results in the destruction of myelin, impairing the transmission of nerve signals and caus
