Ethylmalonic (EMA) and methylsuccinic (MSA) acids concentrations are elevated in tissues and body fluids of patients with ethylmalonic encephalopathy (EE), a mitochondrial disorder associated with basal ganglia abnormalities. To clarify the pathophysiology of this disorder, we evaluated the effects of EMA and MSA on bioenergetics, redox homeostasis and mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) in rat striatum. We verified that EMA and MSA reduced state 3 and uncoupled respiration and inhibited the activities of α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase and complex IV of the electron transport chain. Bot

Cluster headache is a rare form of headache associated with sleep and even speculated to be a manifestation of a sleep disorder rather than a primary headache. Cluster headache exhibits both circadian and circannual rhythmicity. While attacks often occur during sleep, the implication that cluster headaches might be involved with rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phases has neither been fully established nor refuted. The regulatory mechanisms governing sleep including hypothalamic activity and the autonomic nervous system response may play a role. Hypothalamic activation has been observed in clust

The role of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-channel activation in the production of respiratory pattern was studied by administration of the NMDA receptor-channel blocker (+)-5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5,10-imine hydrogen maleate (MK-801, 1-3 mg/kg, i.v.) to anesthetized adult rats. This dose of MK-801 blocked the excitatory effects of NMDA (applied iontophoretically) on brainstem respiratory neurons. The predominant respiratory response to systemic MK-801 administration was an increase in inspiratory duration and a decrease in amplitude of diaphragm electromyogram

Fertility disorders are a worldwide problem affecting 8-12% of the population, with the male factor substantially contributing to about 40-50% of all infertility cases. Mitochondria, crucial organelles for cellular viability, play a pivotal role in the processes of spermatogenesis and significantly affect sperm quality and their fertilizing ability. Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) dysfunction, reduced energy supply for sperm, reduced endogenous coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) levels, and oxidative stress are among the main factors that contribute to male infertility. There is great inter

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation in the brain has garnered considerable attention in recent times. In contrast, there have been fewer studies focused on the spine, despite the expected importance of CSF circulation in disorders specific to the spine, including syringomyelia. The driving forces that regulate spinal CSF flow are not well defined and are likely to be different to the brain given the anatomical differences and proximity to the heart and lungs. The aims of this study were to determine the effects of heart rate, blood pressure and respiration on the distribution of

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics play an important role in maintaining a stable central nervous system environment and are influenced by different physiological processes. Multiple studies have investigated these processes but the impact of each of them on CSF flow is not well understood. A deeper insight into the CSF dynamics and the processes impacting them is crucial to better understand neurological disorders such as hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation, and intracranial hypertension. This study presents a 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model which incorporates physiological process

The centronuclear myopathies (CNMs) are a group of inherited neuromuscular disorders classified as congenital myopathies. While several causative genes have been identified, some patients do not harbor any of the currently known mutations. These diverse disorders have common histological features, which include a high proportion of centrally nucleated muscle fibers, and clinical attributes of muscle weakness and respiratory insufficiency. Respiratory problems in CNMs may manifest initially during sleep, but daytime symptoms, ineffective airway clearance, and hypoventilation predominate as more

UNLABELLED: It has been assumed that the stereotyped hand movements in Rett syndrome are symmetrical, midline and that they prevent purposeful use of the hands. Their relationship with respiration has not been previously explored.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five girls whose Rett syndrome included disorganised breathing were selected. Their parents were contacted and interviewed by telephone at their convenience. None refused.
RESULTS: The hand movements were asymmetrical in 44% of girls. Those with mainly unilateral hand movements used the same hand for purposeful tasks. The hand movements

This study reports on eight patients whose cases have been described in literature, and two patients treated by the author, showing the typical signs of Joubert's syndrome. This disease pattern is characterised by episodic hyperpnoeas and apnoeas, retardation, muscular hypotension, opsoclonia, complete or partial agenesis of the vermiform process of cerebellum, as well as a dilated fourth ventricle. The clinical symptoms are compared with the characteristic signs of REM sleep and of cataplexy.

Copper is a vital micronutrient for animals and plants acting as a crucial cofactor in the synthesis of numerous metabolic enzymes and contributing to mitochondrial respiration, metabolism, oxido-reductive reactions, signal transmission, and oxidative and nitrosative damage. In the cells, copper may exist in the Cu+ and Cu++ oxidation states and the interconversion between these two states may occur via various redox reactions regulating cellular respiration, energy metabolism, and cell growth. The human body maintains a low level of copper, and copper deficiency or copper excess may adversely

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, despite various strategies and interventions being implemented, the rate of neonatal mortality remains high. Despite numerous published articles in Ethiopia, there is a lack of sufficient data regarding the time to death and its predictors in neonatal mortality, especially in pastoral communities like the Afar region. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate neonatal mortality and its predictors among neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at Dubti General Hospital, Northeast Ethiopia.
METHOD: We conducted a facility-based retrospective follow-up study, i

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To quantitatively assess autonomic cardiovascular control in normal young adults following exposure to repetitive acoustically-induced arousals from sleep.
DESIGN: Respiration, R-R interval (RRI) and noninvasive measurements of continuous arterial blood pressure were monitored in subjects during the transition from relaxed wakefulness to stable Stage 2 sleep. These measurements were made under undisturbed conditions or conditions in which transient arousals were induced repetitively by acoustic stimulation. A mathematical model was used to partition the fluctuations in RRI i

This paper is the thirty-seventh consecutive installment of the annual review of research concerning the endogenous opioid system. It summarizes papers published during 2014 that studied the behavioral effects of molecular, pharmacological and genetic manipulation of opioid peptides, opioid receptors, opioid agonists and opioid antagonists. The particular topics that continue to be covered include the molecular-biochemical effects and neurochemical localization studies of endogenous opioids and their receptors related to behavior (endogenous opioids and receptors), and the roles of these opioi

Panic disorder (PD) is unique among the anxiety disorders in that panic symptoms are primarily of a physical nature. Consequently, comorbidity with medical illness is significant. This review examines the association between PD and medical illness. We identify shared pathophysiological and psychological correlates and illustrate how physiological activation in panic sufferers underlies their symptom experience in the context of the fight-or-flight response and beyond a situation-specific response pattern. We then review evidence for bodily symptom perception accuracy in PD. Prevalence of comor
