Genome analysis was carried out on 74 adenovirus 4 (Ad4) isolates from patients in Manchester between 1984 and 1989. Most of the isolates were associated with conjunctivitis. Of the 74 isolates studied, 51 were Ad4a and 10 were Ad4p (the prototype strain). The remaining isolates consisted of two new genome types we have designated Ad4a2 (10 isolates) and Ad4a3 (3 isolates). Most of the genome types co-circulated during the period of study. The Bst E II and Xho I restriction maps of the new variants are presented and compared with those of Ad4p. We are unable to associate genome types with part

The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is an X-linked recessive genetic disease in which the molecular defect is unknown. In 15 families with WAS, seven restriction fragment length polymorphic loci from the X chromosome were used to map the disease locus. Of the eight intervals studied, the likelihood of the WAS gene lying between DXS7 (Xp11.3) and DXS14 (Xp11) was at least 128 times higher than that for any other interval. The most likely gene order is DXS84-OTC-DXS7-WAS-DXS14-DXS1-PGK-DXYS1. Close genetic linkage to DXS7 and DXS14 permits accurate prenatal diagnosis and carrier detection with gr

We describe a simple method to directly clone any DNA fragment for which a flanking restriction enzyme map is known. Genomic DNA is digested with multiple enzymes cutting outside the fragment to be cloned, selected by electroelution from an agarose gel, and cloned directly into a plasmid vector. It is only necessary to screen 10-1000 colonies and recombinant DNA is ready for immediate molecular analysis without further subcloning. The use of this technique is demonstrated for the cloning of a sequence from within the human alpha-globin complex that was previously shown to be "unclonable" in ba

BACKGROUND: Measles and rubella continue to be a significant global health challenge, disproportionately impacting marginalised communities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Innovative technologies such as measles-rubella microarray patches (MR-MAPs) are currently in development and can potentially improve immunisation coverage and equity through their unique product characteristics. Nonetheless, the limited evidence around their use cases, optimal implementation, cost-effectiveness, and integration into national immunisation programmes raises the need for the development of a prior

BACKGROUND: Dirofilariosis is a vector-borne zoonotic disease primarily caused by the parasitic nematodes Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens. In Europe, the disease has expanded from traditionally endemic southern countries to central and northeastern regions, many of which are now also considered endemic. This study aimed to generate infection risk maps for dirofilariosis in Europe using ecoinformatic tools, at both annual and monthly scales, to serve as a prevention tool and contribute to more effective control of the disease, as well as helping to stop its spread.

Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) has materially broadened the landscape of sensorimotor mapping by enabling access to sulcal, medial, and subcortical structures that remain largely beyond the reach of subdural electrodes (SDE). The inherent sampling bias of SDE toward gyral crests and dorsolateral cortices constrains the exploration of the central sulcus-where primary motor and sensory cortices predominantly reside-and limits insight into deeper epileptogenic networks. In routine practice, this topographic restriction is not trivial; it shapes both our hypotheses and our blind spots. SEEG a

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) and health beliefs are pivotal but historically separate determinants of self-management in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and their combined research landscape has not been mapped. We aimed to characterize the intellectual structure, collaborative networks, and thematic evolution of research on HL and health beliefs in T2DM using a comprehensive bibliometric approach.
METHODS: Bibliographic records were retrieved on February 24, 2026 from the Web of Science core collection (science citation index-expanded, social sciences citation index, and emerging source

The onset of estrus is a critical sign of female sexual maturity. The pituitary plays a vital role in this process by the secretion of reproductive hormones. To investigate the effects of nutrient restriction on reproductive function and the underlying mechanisms involved, deep RNA sequencing of pituitary gland tissue was carried out to determine the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between gilts in normal estrus, and gilts in which anestrus was induced by nutrient restriction. Gilts which had gone through two estrus cycles were fed a normal (CON, 2.86kg/d, n = 10) or nutrient restricted

BACKGROUND: Maternal hypertension and hyperglycemia are closely related but have distinct impacts on fetal growth and are managed independently. How the interdependence of blood pressure (BP) and glucose levels quantitatively influences risk patterns for abnormal fetal growth and neonatal complications remains unexplored.
METHODS: Maternal BP and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels were measured between 20 and 28 weeks of gestation in a cohort including 56,881 singleton pregnancies. Linear and quantile regression analyses were used to evaluate the relationship between BP and FPG. We examined

Medically-assisted-procreation via in vitro fertilization, an integral part of of the so-called "reproductive revolution", is a valuable option for couples with sterility or fertility issues. That has however brought about three relevant results: the rift between procreation and sexual intercourse, the opportunity to use heterologous fertilization through donated gametes, and the ensuing increase in the number of "reproductive contributors" (male and/or female gamete donors, surrogate mothers). In Italy, Law n. 40 has put in place several restrictions, stricter than in most other European coun

OBJECTIVES: To reveal the contribution of MRI and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to the diagnosis of mitochondrial encephalopathy (ME) and to evaluate the parenchymal changes associated with this disease in the involved parenchymal areas using the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) parameter.
METHODS: Ten patients who had undergone MRI and DWI analysis with a pre-diagnosis of neurometabolic disease, and who were subsequently diagnosed with ME in laboratory and/or genetic studies, were included in our study. ADC values were compared with a control group composed of 20 patients of similar a

BACKGROUND: The nosology of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is at a critical point in history as the field seeks to better define dimensions of social-communication deficits and restricted/repetitive behaviors on an individual level for both clinical and neurobiological purposes. These different dimensions also suggest an increasing need for quantitative measures that accurately map their differences, independent of developmental factors such as age, language level and IQ.
METHOD: Psychometric measures, clinical observation as well as genetic, neurobiological and physiological research from t

BACKGROUND: The use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to monitor the effects of disease and treatment on patient symptomatology and daily life is increasing in rare diseases (RDs) (i.e. those affecting less than one in 2000 people); however, these instruments seldom yield health state utility values (HSUVs) for cost-utility analyses. In such a context, 'mapping' allows HSUVs to be obtained by establishing a statistical relationship between a 'source' (e.g. a disease-specific PROM) and a 'target' preference-based measure [e.g. the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D) tool].

The study aimed to describe and map the different plant communities that occur in Hope Bay (HB), Antarctic Peninsula. Floristic description was based on mosses, lichens and terrestrial algae species, forming a mosaic of cryptogamic plant communities. A vegetation map was developed based on images taken by the QuickBird sensor. Field campaigns were performed visiting 15 points previously selected in the image. All communities were georeferenced, and floristic work was done. The green alga Prasiola crispa forms the most widespread plant community in HB, closely associated with ornithogenic soils

Suckermouth catfishes, with their evolved powerful features, have become notorious invasive species, causing significant damage to aquatic ecosystems. However, the lack of high-quality genomes severely restricts research on this group within the field. In this study, we de novo assembled the chromosome-level genome assembly of Pterygoplichthys pardalis using multiple platforms of sequencing data, including Illumina short reads, Nanopore long reads, and Hi-C sequencing reads, resulting in a 1.51 Gb genome assembly. Multiple evaluations, including read mapping ratio (98.52%), transcript mapping

Pathogenic mosquito-borne flaviviruses infect mosquito and human hosts, relying on host protein interactions to replicate, evade immunity, and mediate pathogenesis. Prior proteomic studies mapped such interactions for some flaviviruses, but yellow fever virus (YFV)-a pathogen of resurgent concern-remains understudied. Here, we map YFV interactomes in human and mosquito cells to identify interactions common among divergent flaviviruses or unique to YFV. Functional assays reveal a previously unrecognized YFV restriction factor: RBBP6 inhibits YFV genome replication by interacting with the viral

Extracellular signal-regulated kinase 3 (Erk3) is an atypical member of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase family. No function has yet been ascribed to this MAP kinase. Here we show that targeted disruption of the Mapk6 gene (encoding Erk3) leads to intrauterine growth restriction, associated with marked pulmonary hypoplasia, and early neonatal death during the first day of life. Around 40% of Erk3(-/-) neonates die within minutes after birth from acute respiratory failure. Erk3-deficient mice have normal lung-branching morphogenesis, but show delayed lung maturation characterized by d

Cerebral cavernous angiomas are collections of closely clustered vessels without intervening normal brain parenchyma, with microscopic evidence of hemorrhage, frequently multiple; they are best visualized with magnetic resonance imaging. Familial cerebral cavernous angioma occurs as an autosomal dominant disorder, although carriers of the gene are often asymptomatic. Recently, a gene responsible for familial cerebral cavernous angioma in a large Hispanic kindred was mapped to human chromosome 7q11-22, representing a large segment of DNA containing approximately 33 cM (about 33 million base pai
