Vascular dysfunction in retinitis pigmentosa.

The relationship between ocular haemodynamics and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) has not been fully understood. Reductions in blood flow have been established in RP patients by a variety of studies; however, questions have yet to be answered regarding the role of vascular dysfunction in photoreceptors (PR) degeneration, the causes of vascular dysfunction in RP, as well as the diagnostic, prognostic and perhaps therapeutic potential of measuring ocular haemodynamics in RP patients. While significant evidence supports the theory that vascular dysfunction is associated with but not the cause of PR dea

[Congenital retinal arteriovenous fistula and central retinal vein occlusion].

The authors report a case of congenital arteriovenous communication of the retinal near the macula, associated with a central retinal vein occlusion. This occlusion only affected the inferior half-retina, especially the area surrounding the arteriovenous anastomoses. Laser photocoagulation was applied to areas of peripheral ischemia. After a 12 month follow-up, a marked decrease of visual acuity occurred, attributable to severe ischemia and edema in the posterior pole. An extension of the peripheral capillary non perfusion required additional laser treatment. We also observed the reduction in

Compensatory retinal blood flow enhancement in cognitively normal ApoE ε4 carriers.

This study aims to compare retinal vascular characteristics between ApoE ε4 carriers and non-carriers in healthy individuals. A total of 84 cognitively healthy subjects-64 non-carriers and 20 carriers of the ApoE ε4 allele-were analyzed using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA). In the retinal vascular layer of OCTA images, parameters such as foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, vessel perimeter, acircularity index (AI), and vascular density (FD) were quantified. Additionally, blood flow areas in the outer retina and choroidal capillaries, as well as the area without p

Maternal retinal and choroidal microvascular alterations in late-onset fetal growth restriction assessed by optical coherence tomography angiography.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction(FGR) is a common pregnancy complication leading to adverse perinatal outcomes and long-term developmental risks. Beyond placental insufficiency, increasing evidence suggests that maternal systemic and microvascular alterations may contribute to its pathophysiology. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) enables non-invasive evaluation of retinal microvasculature and may provide insights into maternal microvascular alterations in pregnancies complicated by FGR. OBJECTIVE: To assess maternal retinal and choroidal microvascular changes in pregnancies

Eucalyptol Ameliorates Retinal Microvascular Defects through Modulating ER Stress and Angiopoietin-Tie Signaling in Diabetic Eyes.

Loss of the inner blood-retinal barrier (BRB) integrity is a main feature of ocular diseases such as diabetic macular edema. However, there … ced permeability. In addition, oral administration of eucalyptol reduced vascular leaks in diabetic retinal vessels. Taken together, these findings clearly show that eucalyptol inhibits glucose-induced Aβ-mediated ER stress and manipulates Ang signaling in diabetic retinal vessels, which ultimately blocks abnormal angiogenesis and loss of inner BRB integrity. The …
