A 59-year-old man presented to the emergency department (ED) with the chief complaint of "panic attacks." In total, he was evaluated by 14 faculty physicians, 2 fellows, and 16 residents from emergency medicine, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry, and internal medicine. These multiple transitions were responsible, in part, for the perpetuation of a failure to accurately diagnose the patient's underlying medical illness. Deaths due to road accidents during weekends have become a worrying phenomenon in Italy. With the aim of highlighting the role of psychotropic substances (alcohol, drugs of abuse) in causing road accidents, a survey based on clinical and chemico-toxicological analyses has been carried out on car drivers in the Veneto region during night weekends since 1994. BACKGROUND: Pooling of plasma donations increases the risk for blood-borne infections. In solvent/detergent (SD)-treated plasma, lipid-enveloped viruses are efficiently inactivated. This method, however, does not affect non-lipid-enveloped viruses. PURPOSE: Nine patients with unresectable hepatic malignancy and portal vein thrombosis underwent hepatic chemoembolization.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six patients had primary malignancies (hepatocellular carcinoma in five, hepatoblastoma in one), and three had metastatic tumor (adenocarcinoma of the colon in two, glucagonoma in one). Chemoembolization was performed with 10 mg/mL of cross-linked collagen, 10 mg/mL of mitomycin, 3 mg/mL of doxorubicin, and 3 mg/mL of cisplatin. Each patient was treated until flow in the hepatic artery ceased completely.
