In patients with primary calcaneal malignancies, such as Ewing's sarcoma, radical treatment with amputation of the foot can result in serious functional impairment and chronic pain. Total calcanectomy followed by the reconstruction of the calcaneal defect offers an alternative treatment to amputation. Capanna et al. described a technique for successfully reconstructing long limb segmental bone defects using a free fibula flap placed within the intramedullary canal of an allograft. We present both a review of the literature on calcaneal reconstruction and describe how the principles of Capanna

Desmoplastic small round cell tumors (DSRCTs) present a reciprocal chromosomal translocation, t(11;22)(p13;q12), that results in fusion of Ewing's sarcoma and Wilms' tumor (WT1) genes. The authors evaluated 15 DSRCTs and 71 other tumors often considered in the differential diagnosis for immunoreactivity using a polyclonal antibody directed against the WT1 part of the chimeric protein resulting from this translocation. WT1 immunostaining was performed on paraffin material using the WT(C-19) antibody after heat-antigen retrieval. All the DSRCTs (15 of 15, 100%) demonstrated strong WT1 nuclear im

According to the 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Soft Tissue and Bone Tumors, the diagnosis of synovial sarcoma relies on morphology, immunohistochemistry, and the detection of a specific fusion involving the SS18 gene with a member of the SSX gene family. However, few cases of synovial sarcoma that do not harbor such molecular alterations have been recently reported. We present the case of a patient with a diffuse pleural mass and pleural effusion that showed in a core needle biopsy a spindle cell neoplasia morphologically suggestive of synovial sarcoma. An SS18 break-apart FISH was

BACKGROUND: Basaloid neoplasms of the sinonasal tract represent a significant group of tumors with histological overlap but often with different etiologies (i.e., viral, genetics), clinical management, and prognostic significance.
METHODS: Review.
RESULTS: "Basaloid" generally refers to cells with coarse chromatin in round nuclei and sparse cytoplasm, resembling cells of epithelial basal layers or imparting an "immature" appearance. Tumors with this characteristic in the sinonasal tract are represented by a spectrum of benign to high-grade malignant neoplasms, such as adenoid cystic carcinom

AIM: Sino-nasal tract tumours constitute 3% of the head and neck malignancies. Among these tumours, neuroectodermal tumours are rare with histo-morphological and immunohistochemical overlap making them a challenge for the pathologist. We included Ewing's/PNET, olfactory neuroblastoma (OFN), mucosal malignant melanomas (MMM), Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy (MNTI), small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SNEC), and the newest entity Adamantinoma like Ewing's sarcoma (ALES) as part of the neuroectodermally derived tumours of the sino-nasal tract. The last three entities were added to th

Thoracic actinomycosis with involvement of the vertebral column and chest wall is rare in children and may resemble malignant tumors. A 12-year-old girl was admitted to our clinic having B-symptoms, cachexia, and painful scoliosis (Karnofsky index 20%). Imaging showed a large thoracic left-sided paravertebral tumor with infiltration of the vertebrae, destruction of the chest wall and multiple intrapulmonary nodules. Initially, Ewing sarcoma was suspected and chemotherapy started without previous biopsies. Definite diagnosis of actinomycosis was established later upon histopathologic examinatio

Most primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the chest wall destroy the rib, chest wall muscles, diaphragm, and lung or extend into the spinal compartment, resulting in a large-sized tumor and symptoms. In contrast, we recently encountered a rare case of Askin's tumor presenting with early-onset chest pain despite the small size. After resection of the tumor and adjuvant chemotherapy, the patient remains disease-free over 3 years of follow-up.

Autologous bone marrow transplantation is a procedure that allows for the delivery of high doses of chemotherapy and radiation to treat pediatric malignancies. There have been many studies showing a dose-response curve for many of the drugs that have been used for cytoreductive therapy in autologous bone marrow transplantation. These dosage ranges are achievable in many of the preparative regimens used in autologous bone marrow transplantation. The results in neuroblastoma, Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Ewing's sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, osseous sarcoma, other soft tissue sarcomas

Preferentially expressed antigen in melanoma (PRAME) immunohistochemistry is currently used in pathology for the assessment of melanocytic neoplasms; however, knowledge of its expression patterns in soft tissue tumors is limited. PRAME immunohistochemistry (clone QR005) was assessed on whole tissue sections of 350 soft-tissue tumors and mimics (> 50 histotypes). PRAME immunoreactivity was evaluated as follows: 0 "negative" (0% positive cells); 1+ (1-25% positive cells); 2+ (26-50% positive cells); 3+ (51-75% positive cells), and 4+ "diffuse" (> 75% positive cells). PRAME was expressed in 111 l

Although bone tumors (BT) are relatively uncommon among the human neoplasm, they constitute the most frequent tumors in children and adolescents (CAA). Little information is available about the epidemiologic features of BT in CAA. We aimed to present and discuss epidemiological characteristics of BT in CAA in southern Tunisia, regarding the different histological types. This is a retrospective study including cases of BT in CAA collected in the pathology department at the Habib Bourguiba university hospital over a period of 15 years (2006- 2020). A total of 266 BT was diagnosed in our institut

CIC-rearranged sarcoma (CRS) is a subgroup of small round blue cell tumors similar to Ewing's sarcoma but lacking the EWSR1 gene translocation. It is characterized by a CIC gene rearrangement on chromosome 19q13, with the most common partner gene being DUX4. In 2021, the WHO classification of central nervous system tumors (5th edition) introduced a new pathological classification for CRS based on bone and soft tissue tumor classifications, categorizing it as mesenchymal non-meningeal epithelial tumors. Primary CIC::DUX4 rearrangement sarcoma in the central nervous system is extremely rare, wit

IGF-1R belongs to a tyrosine kinase family and is currently a newly discovered drug target. IGF-1R inhibitors can bind directly to IGF-1R to achieve the effect of inhibiting the function of IGF-1R. At present, IGF-1R inhibitors have good clinical effects on Ewing sarcoma in the clinic. In this article, we screened compounds capable of inhibiting IGF-1R function through computer-aided virtual technology. First, some molecules with good docking properties for IGF-1R can be screened by LibDock. Then, ADME analysis (adsorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) and toxicity indicators were

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor is a very rare soft tissue sarcoma with a bleak prognosis and short patient survival. The most common occurrence is in 20-30-year-old men. Our study presents the case report of a 40-year-old patient who was diagnosed with this sarcoma. The first symptom of the illness was an incarcerated epigastric hernia with sarcoma metastasis resembling an intestinal loop in an ultrasound image. The fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) method showed a fusion of the EWS and WT1 genes. Systemic palliative chemotherapy using the VDC-IE (vincristine, doxorubicin, cycloph

An 11-year-old boy developed cardioembolic stroke (CES) and cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD). He originally developed Ewing sarcoma and was treated with high-dose chemotherapy including doxorubicin. On admission, he had severe aphasia, and magnetic resonance imaging showed occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery M3 segment. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed severe left ventricular dysfunction and a mobile thrombus at the left ventricular apex. Intravenous thrombolysis was administered, and effective recanalization was achieved. The patient did not exhibit any neuro

CASE: A 6-year-old patient with Ewing sarcoma at L4 who was treated with total en bloc spondilectomy (TES) through a posterior-only approach. During the dissection of the anterior L4 body, there was uncontrollable bleeding from an unknown origin, which needed packing, massive transfusion, and urgent laparotomy. A median sacral artery (MSA) rupture was identified as the cause of this massive bleeding. Eventually, the patient was successfully stabilized.
CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first reported intraoperative bleeding of the MSA related to a lumbar TES through posterior-only ap

An 18-year-old male patient with a history of Ewing sarcoma originally involving the right ilium was evaluated with an FDG PET/CT scan to evaluate the effect of salvage therapy after standard treatment failed and disease progressed to involve the right T12 pedicle. Autologous stem cell transplantation and cyberknife therapy resulted in mixed tumor response, with incidental note made of prominent areas of cortical FDG avidity in the right kidney. These regions demonstrated focal hypoenhancement on the corresponding diagnostic contrast-enhanced CT, which additionally demonstrated peripheral enha

Intracranial mesenchymal tumours with in-frame gene fusions of the FET family of RNA-binding proteins to the cyclic AMP response element-binding protein family of transcription factors are exceptionally rare primary central nervous system neoplasms, with morphological similarities to angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma. Despite their recent inclusion in the 2021 World Health Organisation classification of tumours of the central nervous system, only a limited number of cases have been reported. We describe two cases of intracranial mesenchymal tumours harbouring fusion of the Ewing sarcoma breakpo
