[Habitual abortions: psychogenic and/or induced psychopathology].

Infertility is felt nowadays as a personal affront, quite intolerable, and RSA are an emblematic example of that personal and social failure, failure of the woman and of the couple, failure of the doctor too, failure of their common project. No wonder if those recurrences open the way to the problem of cause and/or consequences for those women whose pregnancy regularly begins and as regularly sees its evolution thwarted. The hypothesis of a psychological factor not excluding but rather potentialising a somatic one, should work as an incentive to important predictive studies, the best means for

Body dissatisfaction and sexuality among women with bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Past research and clinical observations have implicated sexuality as a factor involved in eating disorders. Yet little research has been conducted on possible links between body image and sexuality. We investigated such relationships within a large sample of women with bulimia nervosa. METHOD: A sample of adult women (N = 221) diagnosed with bulimia nervosa, purging type, completed a widely used measure of body dissatisfaction and answered questions about basic sexual experiences (coital and masturbation experience, age of onset of these activities, and self-rated satisfaction with

Perceived availability of different types of social support among cynically hostile women.

One hundred and ninety six young women completed the Cook-Medley Hostility (Ho) scale and a measure of the perceived availability of social support. Results of partial correlations that adjusted for the confounding effects of neuroticism showed total hostility was most strongly associated with appraisal support (r = -.40, p < .001) and most weakly associated with esteem support (r = -.19, p < .01). These findings help contribute to a more precise understanding of the specific nature of the support deficits experienced by high hostile women. In addition, other findings suggest that different as

The thrill of victory, the complexity of defeat: self-esteem and people's emotional reactions to success and failure.

Low self-esteem people are assumed to have more severe emotional reactions to failure than are high self-esteem people, but this assumption has not received consistent empirical support. In this article the authors report 2 investigations that found that self-esteem differences of this sort emerge for emotions that directly implicate the self (e.g., pride, humiliation) but not for emotions that do not directly implicate the self (e.g., happiness, unhappiness). Additional evidence suggested that this occurs, in part, because low self-esteem people overgeneralize the negative implications of fai

[The delusion of lycanthropic transformation].

The authors describe one case of Lycanthropy and revise the literature about this theme. They observe that Lycanthropy has received scant attention in the modern literature, but appears to have survived into modern times. In some cases the patient (as a Delusion) has the belief that he has been transformed into an animal. In other cases there appears only what seems to be behaviour of an animal. About the first group, the authors make a phenomenological analysis and present a clinical case of Lycanthropic delusion.

The role of construal processes in overconfident predictions about the self and others.

Overconfident behavioral predictions and trait inferences may occur because people make inadequate allowance for the uncertainties of situational construal. In Studies 1-3, Ss estimated how much time or money they would spend in various hypothetical, incompletely specified situations. Ss then offered associated "confidence limits" under different "construal conditions". In Study 4, Ss made trait inferences about someone they believed had responded "deviantly"--again with situational details unspecified and construal conditions manipulated. In all 4 studies, Ss who made predictions or trait inf

Use of a pictorial scale of perceived competence and acceptance with learning disabled boys.

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Acceptance for use with young handicapped children (M age = 8.2 yr.) with severe reading problems. Subjects were 30 learning disabled boys from four private schools located in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex. Data were collected through test-retest administration of the scale and individual interviews with each child. Validity of the physical subscale was established by showing that subjects' reasons for their feelings of physical competence could be classified into one of fiv

Temperament, adjustment, and alcoholism in adult female incest victims.

Female adult incest victims differing in history of alcoholism were compared to an alcoholism-only and a no incest/no alcoholism group on dimensions of temperament, psychological adjustment, and self-esteem. Incest victims with histories of alcoholism were more alienated and withdrawn, less rhythmical in their daily behavior, and evidenced lower self-esteem, more negative mood, greater social nonconformity, and more emotional discomfort than women in the other three groups. Women in the no incest/no alcohol group showed the best self-esteem and psychological adjustment and were generally more

Functional switching from circularly polarized luminescence to whispering gallery modes in a chiral Schiff base.

This work demonstrates a design concept for dual-mode optical materials, embodied by an axially chiral fluorescent Schiff base, (R/S)-BN-2HGCA. The compound exhibits two competing optical functions that are toggled by its physical aggregation state. In a dilute solution, the molecule's chirality is expressed, resulting in clear circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In contrast, upon self-assembly into morphologically pristine microspheres, the chiroptical property is suppressed. This structural transition represents a functional transition where intense optical confinement within the microc

Loneliness among students with special educational needs in mainstream seventh grade.

The goals of this study were twofold. The first aim was to explore loneliness prevalence in typically developing students, students with ASD and students with motor and/or sensory disabilities in mainstream 7th grade in Belgium. The second aim was to explore the relations between number of friends, friendship quality, social self-concept on the one hand and loneliness on the other for each of these three groups, and to compare them across groups. In this study, 108 students with special educational needs (SEN; i.e., 58 students with ASD and 50 students with motor and/or sensory disabilities) w

Motivational capacities after prolonged interpersonal childhood trauma in institutional settings in a sample of Austrian adult survivors.

A considerable amount of research has been conducted on the aversive impact of prolonged interpersonal childhood trauma, but data on possible associations with motivational concepts (self-efficacy, self-esteem and locus of control) in adult survivors is scarce. The purpose of this study is to investigate specific coherences between childhood abuse and adult life events with (a) motivational concepts (MC), (b) the emotion regulation strategy "goal-directed behavior" and (c) the possible mediation of emotion regulation (ER) on motivational concepts. We use data from a cross-sectional survey in V

How might childhood adversity predict adult psychological distress? Applying the Identity Disruption Model to understanding depression and anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Experiencing adversity in childhood is associated with increased risk of a range of psychopathologies, including depression and anxiety disorders. However, there is limited understanding of psychological mechanisms that may help to explain these relationships. The Identity Disruption Model proposes that early adversity can disrupt typical identity development, which may then increase one's vulnerability to psychopathology. The present study aims to apply the Identity Disruption Model to understanding symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorde

[Advances of self-healing dental composite resin].

Degradation of composite resin during ageing always produces micro-cracks, the latter could gradually expand, leading to the fracture of tooth restoration. In order to extend the service life of composite resin by repairing cracks intelligently, self-healing microcapsule models have been introduced in resin-based dental materials. This paper will present the concept and classification of self-healing materials, and review the research progresses on self-healing dental resin.

Perceptual Congruence.

This article explores the concept of perceptual congruence, the alignment between an individual's internal self-image and their external appearance, and its impact on self-esteem and wellbeing. It discusses how self-perception is shaped by internal and external factors, including the influence of social media and cultural beauty standards. The article argues that aesthetic procedures can address perceptual incongruence by helping individuals achieve a closer match between their perceived and idealized selves, leading to enhanced self-regard and improved mental health outcomes.

The Effectiveness of School-Based Sahaja Yoga Meditation in Dealing with Problematic Internet Use Among Adolescents in India.

In the era of globalization, evolving technologies have become integral to modern life. With the normalization of unrestricted internet access, many young people face harmful impacts from excessive use, which can affect their self-esteem. Adaptive coping strategies may mitigate these effects. The present study examined the effectiveness of the Sahaja Yoga Meditation (SYM) program for improving self-esteem and adaptive coping that may reduce problematic internet use and maladaptive coping. We used a purposive sampling technique to select participants from among 119 students from 9th to 11th gra

An examination of the impact of online feedback and social distance on the implicit self-identity of adolescents: behavioral and ERP evidence.

Adolescents' self-identity is shaped by online feedback's valence (positive/negative) and social distance (near/far). This study tested their interactive effects on implicit self-identity and neural correlates. Experiment 1 used an implicit association measure (D-score) to assess self-identity across ages. Participants received near (peer) or far (stranger) positive/negative feedback. Distant positive feedback reduced D-scores (weaker self-identity links) versus near positive feedback; negative feedback showed the opposite. Late adolescents had higher D-scores for near versus far feedback-indi

Change of self-schemas following mindfulness-based compassionate living for recurrent depression: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Compassion-based interventions, like Mindfulness-Based Compassionate Living (MBCL), are increasingly recognized as treatments for depression. This study explores the impact of MBCL on self-schemas. METHODS: As part of an RCT on MBCL for depression, self-description interviews of approximately 3 min in duration were conducted with 24 patients before and after MBCL and were analyzed using mixed methods. Qualitative analysis used both a deductive approach (based on the Five Factor Model) to identify themes and an inductive approach to explore subthemes within those themes. Additional
