BACKGROUND: Rock climbers are particularly susceptible to shoulder injuries due to repetitive upper-limb movements on vertical or overhanging terrain. However, the long-term effects of prolonged climbing on the shoulder joints are still unknown.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the prevalence of pain and degenerative changes in the shoulder joints after high-level rock climbing over at least 25 years. We hypothesized that specific climber-associated patterns of degeneration would be found.
METHODS: Thirty-one adult male high-level rock climbers were compared to an age- and s…

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is evolving as a particularly valuable diagnostic procedure in the evaluation of musculoskeletal pathology. To assess the role of MRI as applied to the shoulder, we examined eight normal volunteers, six patients with seven arthrographically proven rotator cuff tears and two patients with impingement symptomatology but with negative double contrast conventional and computed tomographic arthrography. The studies were performed on a 1-Tesla magnet operating at 0.5 Tesla. Coronal T1-weighted images were obtained in all cases and coronal spin density and T2-weighted

Proximal biceps tendon rupture, biceps tendinitis, and medical biceps subluxation are injuries that occur alone and in association with other pathologic conditions of the shoulder. The literature describes various strategies for imaging and treating these biceps tendon complex injuries but offers no clear consensus on a gold-standard approach. The keys to successful treatment are an accurate diagnosis, identification of associated pathologic conditions, and assessment of functional limitations of the injury.

Authors call attention, describing 3 cases of their own, to the diagnostical difficulties of these rare injuries. They think the axillary Roentgenogram, except the dislocated fractures of the humerus, in all injuries of the shoulder region necessary. In 2 cases operations were performed, 1 patient was treated conservatively. In case of fracture of the process with impirtant dislocation operation is suggested. The patients healed with good functional results.

UNLABELLED: Obstetric brachial plexus palsy (OBPP), is an injury of the brachial plexus at childbirth affecting the nerve roots of C5-6 (Erb-Duchenne palsy-nearly 80% of cases) or less frequently the C8-T1 nerve roots (Klumpke palsy). OBPP often has medicolegal implications. In the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland the incidence is 0.42, in the United States 1.5, and in other western countries 1 to 3 per 1000 live births. Most infants with OBPP have no known risk factors. Shoulder dystocia increases the risk for OBPP 100-fold. The reported incidence of OBPP after shoulder dystocia var

Five years after severe injury (ISS>15), usually involving several body regions, 158 patients were assessed regarding their musculo-skeletal recovery. An earlier paper in this journal about this study 'Injury 29 (1998) 55' showed that when considering the main body regions causing long term disability, 45% were due to bony injuries to the extremities, pelvis and shoulder girdle. We analysed these body areas regarding the degrees of disability and pain and also for problems with activities of daily living, work, sport and mobility. All patients with unstable pelvic fractures had moderate or sev

This paper focuses on biceps injuries in shoulder surgery. This topic is currently of great interest, and there has been much discussion about diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Biceps tendon pathology exists in many forms and is frequently associated with other shoulder disorders. These facts must be taken into consideration in the evaluation and treatment of patients with long head of the biceps pathology. There is much controversy about the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT). The clinical significance to shoulder function, diagnosis and treatment are still a source of debate. The purpo

Traumatic injuries to the shoulder girdle are common lesions and occur from birth on through the whole life. Depending on the patient's age, localization and type of injury change. Diagnosis of acute osseous traumatic lesions to the shoulder is based on evaluation of trauma mechanism, patient's examination and, as for the most cases, conventional radiographs. Only in certain cases additional radiological examinations are necessary. As a minimum, two to three images in different planes, anteriorposterior, lateral and axillary, are recommended in order to display all components of the shoulder g

Injuries in triathletes are common and are mostly overuse injuries. Rotator cuff tendinitis is the most common complaint from swimming, but the incidence of tendinopathy and rotator cuff tears on magnetic resonance imaging is comparable in triathletes without and with shoulder pain. Cycling injuries are mainly to the knee, including patellar tendinosis, iliotibial band syndrome, and patellofemoral stress syndrome, and to the Achilles tendon and the cervical and lumbar spine. Running is associated with most injuries in triathletes, during both training and racing, causing the athlete to discont

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the nature of surfing injuries in Cornwall in order to identify trends and inform clinical management.
METHODS: The details of patients presenting (with injuries sustained while surfboard/bodyboard riding) to the Emergency Department (ED) of the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro (UK), from September 2004 until August 2006 were recorded prospectively. The notes were then retrospectively reviewed by a senior ED physician. The records of each visit were scrutinized for date, age, sex, injury type, and injury severity and outcome; in addition, the patient's residential status (

UNLABELLED: Many anesthesiologists are unfamiliar with the rate of surgical neurological complications of the shoulder and elbow procedures for which they provide local anesthetic-based anesthesia and/or analgesia. Part 1 of this narrative review series on neurological complications of elective orthopedic surgery describes the mechanisms and likelihood of peripheral nerve injury associated with some of the most common shoulder and elbow procedures, including open and arthroscopic shoulder procedures, elbow arthroscopy, and total shoulder and elbow replacement. BACKGROUND: Athletes typically maintain rigorous training and work programs to be able to participate in competitions. An injury that occurs during the competition that causes withdrawal from the competition and a possible departure from sports, can render results athletes' and their support staff's efforts as meaningless. The early detection of injuries in the competition and developing preventive training programs can help ensure that participating in competitions and the associated preparatory efforts are not wasted. In this study, the sports injuries discussed occurred during training and

The current dominant role of conventional radiography must be reassessed at increasingly shorter intervals in view of the continuing emergence of new imaging modalities that are available to diagnose peripheral musculoskeletal injuries. In comparison with conventional radiography, digital radiographic techniques offer advantages for optimization of image quality and dose, such as a wider dynamic range and post-processing of images. Currently, digital luminescence radiography (storage phosphor radiography) is the most commonly used digital method for obtaining radiographs, using the established

Splenic injury following colonoscopy is extremely rare. We report a 75-year-old woman and a 35-year-old woman who presented to the emergency room with left upper quadrant and left shoulder pain following colonoscopy. Both patients were diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) with splenic injuries and hemoperitoneum. One patient was successfully managed conservatively, and one patient needed emergent open splenectomy. The possibility of splenic injury should be considered in post-colonoscopy patients with left upper quadrant or left shoulder pain.

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder pain is a common emergency department (ED) presentation. Scapular winging is a rare condition often associated with long thoracic nerve injury. This case report describes an even rarer case of dorsal scapular nerve injury caused by a nontraumatic first rib fracture in a young weightlifter, an injury mechanism not previously reported in the literature.
CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old male presented to the ED with left shoulder pain following weightlifting. Physical examination demonstrated scapular winging, and a clinical diagnosis of dorsal scapular neuropraxia was made. Ima

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on the optimal treatment of in-season athletes with anterior shoulder instability, and limited data are available to guide return to play.
PURPOSE: To examine the likelihood of return to sport and the recurrence of instability after an in-season anterior shoulder instability event based on the type of instability (subluxation vs dislocation). Additionally, injury factors and patient-reported outcome scores administered at the time of injury were evaluated to assess the predictability of eventual successful return to sport and time to return to sport during th
