Effect of Nocturia and Sleep Quality on Sleep Blood Pressure: The HI-JAMP Study.

BACKGROUND: Blood pressure (BP) during sleep is known to be affected by sleep disturbance, including nocturia and sleep disorders. This study investigated the effect of nocturia and self-reported poor sleep on BP using a multisensor BP monitoring device (TM-2441; A&D Co) equipped with an accelerator. METHODS: This analysis is part of the HI-JAMP study (Home-Activity ICT-based Japan Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring Prospective), in which 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring with simultaneously monitored physical activity using a multisensor all-in-one device was performed in hypertensive patie…

Sex and Sleep Quality Effects on the Relationship Between Sleep Disruption and Pain Sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain affects around 20% of the global population and is influenced by various factors, including sleep quality. Studies indicate that sleep disruption can enhance pain sensitivity; however, it is unclear how sex and baseline sleep quality impact these findings. This study examines how sex and baseline sleep quality impact the effects of three nights of sleep disruption on pain sensitivity in healthy individuals. METHODS: Fifty-nine participants (30 females) underwent two laboratory sessions, separated by three nights of sleep disruption. Pain sensitivity was measured using…

Impact of Body Composition on Sleep and Its Relationship with Sleep Disorders: Current Insights.

Sleep is involved in many physiological processes and is essential for both physical and mental health. Obesity and sleep deprivation due to sleep disorders are major public health issues. Their incidence is increasing, and they have a wide range of adverse health-related consequences, including life-threatening cardiovascular disease. The impact of sleep on obesity and body composition is well-known, and many studies have shown an association between insufficient or excessive sleep duration and obesity, body fat percentage, and weight gain. However, there is growing evidence of the effects of…

Fear of sleep in first responders: associations with trauma types, psychopathology, and sleep disturbances.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Fear of sleep contributes to insomnia in some individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but remains uncharacterized in first responders, a population with high rates of insomnia and PTSD. We evaluated the clinical relevance of fear of sleep in first responders by (1) examining its relationship with trauma types and clinical symptoms and (2) assessing differences in fear of sleep severity between those reporting provisional PTSD, insomnia, or both. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 242 first responders across the United States (59.2% male, 86.4% white, 56.2% law…

The Burden of Respiratory Alterations during Sleep on Comorbidities in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) has an important impact on the risk of morbidity and mortality, so we have designed the present study to understand which factor is most involved in the risk of developing a comorbidity between OSA severity and nocturnal hypoxemia. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 617 adult subjects who were referred to our unit for a suspicion of OSA between January 2018 and January 2020. RESULTS: Sleep investigations performed by participants (72% male and obese in 70% of cases) reported an overall mean apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) of 44.0 ± 24.8 ev…

Clinical Management of Sleep and Sleep Disorders With Cannabis and Cannabinoids: Implications to Practicing Psychiatrists.

Phytocannabinoid derivatives are among the several compounds found in the cannabis plant. The phytocannabinoid chemicals Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol are mostly responsible for the drug's behavioral effects. Chronic cannabis administration has been shown to disrupt circadian rhythms and reduce the duration of the deepest phase (stage N3) of nonrapid eye movement sleep. Cannabidiol is thought to be responsible for the disruption of the circadian rhythm, whereas THC is thought to be accountable for the changes in sleep architecture. The quality of one's sleep has a significant i…

Sex moderates the effects of total sleep deprivation and sleep restriction on risk preference.

Sleep loss has been shown to alter risk preference during decision-making. However, research in this area has largely focussed on the effects of total sleep deprivation (TSD), while evidence on the effects of sleep restriction (SR) or the potentially moderating role of sex on risk preference remains scarce and unclear. The present study investigated risky decision-making in 47 healthy young adults who were assigned to either of two counterbalanced protocols: well-rested (WR) and TSD, or WR and SR. Participants were assessed on the Lottery Choice Task (LCT), which requires a series of choices b…

Simple and Autonomous Sleep Signal Processing System for the Detection of Obstructive Sleep Apneas.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by repetitive upper airway obstruction, intermittent hypoxemia, and recurrent awakenings during sleep. The most used treatment for this syndrome is a device that generates a positive airway pressure—Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), but it works continuously, whether or not there is apnea. An alternative consists on systems that detect apnea episodes and produce a stimulus that eliminates them. Article focuses on the development of a simple and autonomous processing system for the detection of obstructive sleep ap…

Alpha-delta sleep pattern in an acute functional neurological patient with no perception of sleep.

UNLABELLED: Functional neurological disorders are characterized by neurologic symptoms not consistent with a primary neurologic pathology. Although neurological disorders are commonly associated with poor sleep, alpha intrusion of slow-wave sleep is not described in cases of functional neurological disorder. We describe a case demonstrating an alpha-delta sleep pattern in a patient presenting with a functional neurological disorder and no perception of sleep. Although alpha-delta sleep is more commonly associated with fibromyalgia, this pattern may be a potential biomarker for the physiology o…

The Moderating Role of Parental Sleep Knowledge on Children with Developmental Disabilities and Their Parents' Sleep.

BACKGROUND: Children with intellectual and developmental difficulties often experience sleep problems, which in turn may impact parental sleep patterns. This study explored the role of parental sleep knowledge as a moderator on the relationship between child sleep and parental sleep impairment. METHODS: 582 parents or caregivers (92.6% mothers) of children with different developmental disabilities (Age M = 9.34, 29.5% females) such as Down's syndrome, participated in an online survey. Multiple regression analysis was conducted. RESULTS: Parental sleep knowledge of child sleep was a moderatin…

Sleep-disordered breathing and sleep macro- and micro-architecture in children with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome (DS) are at increased risk of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), which is associated with intermittent hypoxia and sleep disruption affecting daytime functioning. We aimed to compare the impact of SDB on sleep quality in children with DS compared to typically developing (TD) children with and without SDB. METHODS: Children with DS and SDB (n = 44) were age- and sex-matched with TD children without SDB (TD-) and also for SDB severity with TD children with SDB (TD+). Children underwent overnight polysomnography with sleep macro- and micro-architecture asse…

Sleep Deprivation and Sleep-Onset Insomnia are Associated with Blunted Physiological Reactivity to Stressors.

INTRODUCTION: Military operations often involve intense exposure to stressors combined with acute sleep deprivation, while military personnel also experience high prevalence of chronic sleep deficiency from insomnia and other sleep disorders. However, the impact of acute and chronic sleep deficiency on physiologic stressor responses is poorly understood. In a controlled laboratory study with normal sleepers and individuals with chronic sleep-onset insomnia, we measured responses to an acute stressor administered in a sleep deprivation condition or a control condition. METHODS: Twenty-two adul…

Surgical management of obstructive sleep apnoea: A position statement of the Australasian Sleep Association.

Surgery for adult obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) plays a key role in contemporary management paradigms, most frequently as either a second-line treatment or in a facilitatory capacity. This committee, comprising two sleep surgeons and three sleep physicians, was established to give clarity to that role and expand upon its appropriate use in Australasia. This position statement has been reviewed and approved by the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA) Clinical Committee.

Impact of Upper Airway Collapse and Sleep Parameters on Daytime Sleepiness and Sleep Quality.

OBJECTIVE: Standard overnight polysomnography (PSG) scores only the apneahypopnea index (AHI) as a predictor of sleep apnea. It is proven that the arousals also contribute especially to the daytime symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA). The authors aimed to search the relevance of arousals and obstruction site in the upper airway with the sleep parameters, daytime sleepiness and the sleep quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total number of 118 subjects were recruited. All of them received a full-night attended PSG and a thorough otolaryngologic examination to identify the site of o…

Children Sleep and Antisocial Behavior: Differential Association of Sleep with Aggression and Rule-Breaking.

There is a strong relationship between sleep and behavioral problems. These findings are often interpreted via environmental explanations, such that poor sleep directly exacerbates or causes symptoms of aggression and behavior problems. However, there are other possible explanations, such that the genes predicting poor sleep also predict aggression or rule-breaking. The current study sought to elucidate the origin of this relationship. The sample was composed of 1030 twin pairs (426 monozygotic and 604 dizygotic). The sample was 51.3% male with a mean age of 8.06 years (range 6-11.96; SD = 1.4…
