Absence of REM rebound after barbiturate withdrawal.

Administration of three different barbiturates reduced rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Drug withdrawal led to a return to baseline REM] values without significant overshoot. Similar results are observed with administration of benzodiazepines in pharmacologically equivalent dosages; therefore, a distinction between these two drug classes on the basis of withdrawal effects on the sleep electroencephalogram appears unwarranted. Further investigation is required determine why high REM levels are sometimes associated with the withdrawal of sedative-hypnotic agents.

Sleep disturbances in anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep is crucial for physical and psychological health, and disturbances are closely linked to psychiatric disorders, making their management essential for improving treatment outcomes and preventing relapse. Although sleep disturbances are implicated in psychopathology of eating disorders, its role in anorexia nervosa (AN) remains unclear. This review aimed to characterise sleep in AN. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in four scientific databases, including papers from inception to 25 May 2024. A machine learning algorithm (ASReview) was utilised to screen titles and

Increased sighing during sleep as a marker of multiple system atrophy.

Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) can be preceded by isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). As excessive sighing during wakefulness is a red flag for MSA in individuals with parkinsonism, we measured sighing during slow wave sleep (N3) and REM sleep as potential biomarkers in 73 participants with MSA, 111 with iRBD, 257 with PD, and 115 controls. The number of sighs/hour of N3 (index) was higher in the MSA group than in the other groups. Sighs were rarer in REM sleep than in N3 sleep. A sigh index greater than 3.4/h of N3 was 95% sensitive in discriminating parti

Sleep electroencephalographic patterns and cranial computed tomography in anxiety disorders.

Sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) and cranial computed tomography (CT) were performed in 15 drug-free inpatients with an anxiety disorder. The sleep EEG of the patients was characterized by a decreased sleep efficiency and a shortened REM latency. Under visual inspection, four (27%) patients showed ventricular enlargement, while an increased ventricular brain ratio (VBR) was measured in five (33%). No clear associations between EEG sleep measures and ventricular size became obvious, although there is good evidence in the literature that sleep continuity, slow-wave sleep, or REM sleep are closel

Parasomnias in patients with addictions-a systematic review.

Parasomnias are involuntary behaviors or subjective experiences during sleep. Our objective was to review existing information on the presence of parasomnias in patients with addictions or during treatment for addictions. Information about parasomnias related to rapid-eye-movement (REM) and non-REM sleep in patients with addictions, while using substances or in abstinence, was reviewed. A systematic search of published articles reporting parasomnias as a consequence of drug use or abuse was conducted in the PubMed and SciELO databases. The search for the studies was performed in three phases:

Electroencephalographic sleep correlates of episode and vulnerability to recurrence in depression.

The study of electroencephalogram (EEG) sleep in depressed patients before and after treatment with psychotherapy can distinguish episode-related and persistent biological features. With longitudinal follow-up, we can also assess whether EEG sleep measures are associated with recurrence of depression. In the current study, we examined EEG sleep during the depressed state and during symptomatic remission after treatment with interpersonal psychotherapy in 42 outpatients with major depression. Analyses included both visually-scored and computer-analyzed measures. Patients showed significant incr

Prevalence, associated risk factors, and respiratory event distribution of obstructive sleep apnea in children with Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: Children with Down Syndrome (DS) have a high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We aimed to assess OSA prevalence in a single center cohort of children with DS, identify associated risk factors of obstructive respiratory events, and examine the influence of different sleep stages and body positions on respiratory events distribution. METHODS: Single center retrospective study that included children with DS who underwent overnight polysomnogram (PSG). OSA severity was categorized by obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (OAHI) as mild (1.5-4.9 events/h), moderate (5-9.9 events/h)

Sleep-State Dependent Alterations in Brain Functional Connectivity under Urethane Anesthesia in a Rat Model of Early-Stage Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the gradual degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, leading to striatal dopamine depletion. A partial unilateral striatal 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesion causes 40-60% dopamine depletion in the lesioned rat striatum, modeling the early stage of PD. In this study, we explored the connectivity between the brain regions in partially 6-OHDA lesioned male Wistar rats under urethane anesthesia using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at 5 weeks after the 6-OHDA infusion. Under urethane anesthesia, the brain fluctuates bet

Electroencephalographic correlates of cataplectic attacks in narcoleptic canines.

Cataplectic attacks were monitored behaviorally and polygraphically in 4 narcoleptic dogs, of which three inherited the disorder. The recorded EEG signals were evaluated by power spectral analysis. We found 3 distinct stages of cataplexy: an initial stage which resembled wakefulness with tonic suppression of EMG activity, a later stage which was highly similar to REM sleep, and a final transitional stage to wakefulness or NREM sleep. The first stage of cataplexy was characterized by full postural collapse, a waking-like EEG spectrum, visual tracking, and a hypotonic EMG. The second stage of ca

Effects of Lorazepam on the automatic online evaluation of sleep EEG data in healthy volunteers.

In earlier publications we described an automatic algorithm to detect rapid eye movement (REM) sleep from a single-channel EEG recording without using EMG or EOG information. This system consisted of an artificial neural network operating on the basis of preprocessed EEG data and was composed to provide a maximum of robustness for online applications. In the present study the influence of acute administration of lorazepam on the performance of the REM detection procedure was evaluated. Following an adaptation to laboratory conditions, sleep EEG data were obtained from healthy subjects in three

Neurobiology of cataplexy.

Cataplexy is the pathognomonic and the most striking symptom of narcolepsy. It has originally been, and still is now, widely considered as an abnormal manifestation of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep during wakefulness due to the typical muscle atonia. The neurocircuits of cataplexy, originally confined to the brainstem as those of REM sleep atonia, now include the hypothalamus, dorsal raphe (DR), amygdala and frontal cortex, and its neurochemistry originally focused on catecholamines and acetylcholine now extend to hypocretin (HCRT) and other neuromodulators. Here, we review the neuroanatomy a

Oxygenation and breathing pattern during phasic and tonic REM in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Oxygen desaturation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) occurs during sleep and is most marked in REM sleep. REM is not a homogeneous state, consisting of phasic REM (PREM) (REMs, myoclonic twitches) and tonic REM (TREM) (muscle atonia, desynchronized electroencephalogram). In normals, onset of PREM produces transient changes in breathing pattern with a decrease in respiratory amplitude and an increase in frequency, which produce reductions in oxygen saturation (SaO2). Because it is reasonable to expect such breathing pattern changes to cause more desaturation in COPD, and because

Genetic depletion of 5-HT increases central apnea frequency and duration and dampens arousal but does not impact the circadian modulation of these variables.

We examined the impact of serotonin (5-HT) on the frequency and duration of central apneic events and the frequency of accompanying arousals during nonrapid and rapid eye movement (NREM and REM, respectively) sleep across the light/dark cycle. Electroencephalography, electromyography, core body temperature, and activity were recorded for 24 h following implantation of telemeters in wild-type (Tph2+/+) and tryptophan hydroxylase 2 knockout (Tph2-/-) male mice. The frequency and duration of central apneic events were increased, the number of apneic events coupled to an arousal was decreased, and

Sleep-timing mismatch (MSFsc-lights-off interval) and its association with polysomnographic sleep parameters in a clinical population under a fixed laboratory schedule.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the difference between individual sleep midpoint (MSFsc) and a fixed laboratory bedtime predicts polysomnographic (PSG) sleep parameters under clinical conditions enriched for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) evaluation. METHODS: Overnight PSG data from 645 clinically referred adults were analyzed under a standardized schedule (lights-off 21:30; lights-on 06:00). Each participant's sleep midpoint was indexed by mid-sleep on free days corrected for sleep debt (MSFsc). The sleep-timing mismatch (Δt) was defined as the difference between MSFsc and each participant's

Sharply contoured theta waves are the human correlate of ponto-geniculo-occipital waves in the primary visual cortex.

OBJECTIVE: Ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) waves occurring along the visual axis are one of the hallmarks of REM sleep in experimental animals. In humans, direct evidence is scarce. There is no systematic study of PGO waves in the primary visual cortex. METHODS: Eleven epilepsy patients undergoing combined intracranial EEG/polysomnography had 71 channels recording physiological EEG activity from various cortical areas; seven channels recorded from the primary visual cortex. An equal number of 4-s phasic and tonic REM segments were selected. Patterns consistent with PGO waves were visually anal
