Behavioral interventions for sleep problems in autistic children: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Autistic children are at high risk for sleep problems, which have significant detrimental effects on overall functioning. Behavioral treatment is effective for pediatric insomnia in the general population; however, current evidence on behavioral sleep interventions for autistic children has not been synthesized. This study addressed this gap by systematically reviewing available evidence on the effects of behavioral sleep interventions on sleep and daytime functioning in autistic children. METHODS AND RESULTS: A systematic search of five databases (PubMed, PsycInfo, Web of Science, E

Well-being, mental health and sleep in children and young people with vision impairment: A narrative review.

Multiple studies have shown that vision impairment impacts adults' well-being, mental health, and sleep. However, little attention has been given to these areas in children and young people with vision impairment. This narrative review explores the relationship between vision impairment, well-being, mental ill-health, and sleep in children and young people with vision impairment. Studies examined include children and young people with all levels of vision impairment and those with congenital or acquired vision loss. The evidence suggests that vision impairment affects children's and young peop

[Sleep disturbances in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder: possible mechanisms and main treatment approaches].

The review summarizes the results of sleep studies in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and describes the specific features of nightmares as well as other sleep disturbances specific to this disease. Hypothetical mechanisms of impaired adaptive function of dreams and sleep-dependent reconsolidation of emotional memory in PTSD are addressed. The diagnostic value of dreams during the acute posttraumatic period is discussed. Modern methodological approaches to the treatment of PTSD and concomitant insomnia and nightmares are presented.

[Sleep disturbances in post-traumatic stress disorder. An overview of the literature].

BACKGROUND: Nightmares and insomnia are experienced by 70% of patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These sleep problems are often resistant to treatment and exert a strong negative influence on the quality of life. In the last few decades several studies have reported on the characteristics of sleep disturbances in PTSD. AIM: To provide an overview of objective features of sleep disturbances - as opposed to self-report methods - in patients with PTSD. METHOD: Articles on this topic, published in peer-reviewed journals between 1980 and the present, were retrieved fro

Clinical, anatomical, and physiologic relationship between sleep and headache.

The intimate relationship between sleep and headache has been recognized for centuries, yet the relationship remains clinically and nosologically complex. Headaches associated with nocturnal sleep have often been perceived as either the cause or result of disrupted sleep. An understanding of the anatomy and physiology of both conditions allows for a clearer understanding of this complex relationship and a more rational clinical and therapeutic approach. Recent biochemical and functional imaging studies in patients with primary headache disorders has lead to the identification of potential cent

Sleep and respiration in children: time to wake up!

The interest in paediatric sleep disorders over the last few decades has had its main focus on the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) - healthy infants who go to sleep and never wake up again. Overall, this is the most dramatic form of paediatric sleep disordered breathing. By contrast, classical presentations of sleep disordered breathing in children, such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea as well as their clinical implications have been greatly neglected and underestimated in the past. In contrast to snoring in adults, snoring in children has so far generally been regarded as noisy br

Lavender improves sleep through olfactory perception and GABAergic neurons of the central amygdala.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The use of lavender as sleep aid or hypnotic agent can be traced back as early as ancient Romans and Greeks. Yet, objective experimental data on whether and how lavender enhances sleep duration or/and sleep quality remain lacking. AIM OF THE STUDY: We aimed to characterize the sleep-wake regulating effects of lavender in the mouse and to demonstrate the brain targets and neural circuits involved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A self-made precise odor delivery system combined with chronic polysomnographic recordings was employed to assess the sleep-wake effects of inh

Emerging therapies in narcolepsy-cataplexy.

In the past, narcolepsy was primarily treated using amphetamine-like stimulants and tricyclic antidepressants. Newer and novel agents, such as the wake-promoting compound modafinil and more selective reuptake inhibitors targeting the adrenergic, dopaminergic, and/or serotoninergic reuptake sites (ie, venlafaxine, atomoxetine) are better-tolerated available alternatives. The development of these agents, together with sodium oxybate (a slow-wave sleep-enhancing agent that consolidates nocturnal sleep, reduces cataplexy, and improves sleepiness), has led to improved functioning and quality of lif

Unravelling the cerebellum's role in sleep regulation: Prospects for precision sleep medicine.

The cerebellum, traditionally associated with motor coordination, is increasingly recognized as a regulator of non-motor functions-including cognition and emotions. However, its involvement in sleep regulation has been comparatively overlooked, mainly due to the historical exclusion of the cerebellum from electrophysiological and neuroimaging sleep research. Growing evidence now identifies the cerebellum as an active component of sleep mechanisms in both physiological and clinical contexts. Supporting findings include: (1) extensive cerebellar connectivity with major sleep-regulatory circuits;

Sleep health in the older adults: Architecture, circadian changes, and common sleep disorders.

Population aging accelerates globally, increasing sleep-related complaints among older adults. These disorders substantially impact cognitive function, physical health, and quality of life. This narrative review examines age-related changes in sleep architecture, alterations in circadian rhythm, common sleep disorders, and modifiable behavioral factors in older populations. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar through December 2025 for studies involving adults aged ≥ 65 years focusing on sleep patterns, architecture, circadian rhythms, and disorders. Normal aging involves red

Sleep disturbances in tension-type headache: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tension-type headache (TTH) is the most common primary headache, yet accompanying sleep disturbances have not been quantitatively synthesized. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to January 3, 2026, for observational studies reporting sleep outcomes in adults with TTH. The primary outcome was the prevalence of poor sleep quality assessed with the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). Pooled estimates were calculated using random-effects models. Study quality was assessed with Joanna Briggs Institute checklists. RESULTS:

The association between depressive symptoms and sleep quality in patients with multiple sclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, immune-mediated disease often associated with neuropsychiatric complications, including depressive symptoms and sleep disturbances. Evidence regarding their association remains inconsistent; therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the correlation between depressive symptoms and sleep quality in patients with MS. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus up to February 2, 2025. Cross-sectional and case-control studies which assessed sleep quality using the Pitts

Sleep characteristics and brain structure: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, the prevalence of associated conditions, including neurodegeneration and dementia, will increase. Thus, reducing risk factors is crucial to prevention. Sleep contributes to brain homeostasis and repair, which, if impaired, could lead to neurodegeneration. However, the relationship between sleep characteristics, disorders, and brain morphology is poorly understood in healthy adults. Therefore, we aimed to systematically analyse the literature and clarify how sleep characteristics are associated with brain structures. METHODS: We systematically searche

A bidirectional model of sleep and technology use: A theoretical review of How much, for whom, and which mechanisms.

The link between technology and sleep is more complex than originally thought. In this updated theoretical review, we propose a new model informed by the growing body of evidence in the area over the past 10 years. The main theoretical change is the addition of bi-directional links between the use of technology and sleep problems. We begin by reviewing the evidence to date for the originally proposed mechanisms of bright light, arousal, nighttime sleep disruptions, and sleep displacement. Then, in support of the new direction of effect (sleep problems preceding technology use), we propose two

Sleep and home parenteral nutrition in adults: A narrative review.

Infusions of home parenteral nutrition (HPN) are often cycled at night coinciding with sleep episodes. Adult consumers of HPN are known to experience poor sleep attributed to frequent awakenings and long durations of wakefulness after falling asleep. Consequently, most consumers do not meet recommendations for sleep duration and quality or daytime napping. The primary underlying pathophysiology resulting in sleep problems is nocturia; however, other factors also exist, including disruptions caused by medical equipment (ie, pump alarms), comorbid conditions, dysglycemia, and medication use. Translational approaches to influence sleep and arousal.

Sleep disorders are widespread in society and are prevalent in military personnel and in Veterans. Disturbances of sleep and arousal mechanisms are common in neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and affective disorders, traumatic brain injury, dementia, and substance use disorders. Sleep disturbances exacerbate suicidal ideation, a major concern for Veterans and in the general population. These disturbances impair quality of life, affect interpersonal relationships, reduce work productivity, exacerbate clinical features of other disorders, a
