The functional role of decorin in corneal neovascularization in vivo.

Our earlier decorin (Dcn) gene overexpression studies found that the targeted Dcn gene transfer into the cornea inhibited corneal angiogenesis in vivo using a rabbit model. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that anti-angiogenic effects of decorin in the cornea are mediated by alterations in a normal physiologic balance of pro- and anti-angiogenic factors using decorin deficient (Dcn-/-) and wild type (Dcn+/+) mice. Corneal neovascularization (CNV) in Dcn-/- and Dcn+/+ mice was produced with a standard chemical injury technique. The clinical progression of CNV in mice was monitored with s

Imaging of Ocular Surface Lesions Using Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography.

Ocular surface lesions encompass a wide spectrum of entities ranging from benign degenerative lesions to non-invasive and invasive malignant tumours. Accurate clinical differentiation is essential to ensure timely management. In this manuscript, we describe a series of benign and malignant ocular surface lesions and their clinical and specific imaging findings on anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT), highlighting the diagnostic utility of this non-invasive imaging modality. We characterise ocular surface squamous neoplasia, pterygia, Salzmann's nodular degeneration, conjuncti

A case of pediatric ocular trauma caused by a green-colored pencil.

We describe the case of a 6-year-old boy who presented with a right eye bruise after hitting the corner of a chair. Although slit-lamp microscopy revealed only conjunctival lacerations, B-scan ultrasound and computed tomography of the right eye orbital region showed high-intensity reflections and a high-density area, respectively. Suspecting an intraorbital foreign body, we reinterviewed the patient, who admitted to falling while holding a green-colored pencil. The patient was taken for surgery under general anesthesia, and a yellow, liquified muddy foreign body was located under the nasolater

Persistent Basal Cell Carcinoma Following Self-Treatment With a "Natural Cure," Sanguinaria canadensis.

A 65-year-old woman presented with a 6-week history of redness, eyelid swelling, and discharge in the right eye. Slit lamp examination revealed right medial canthal erythema with cicatricial lower lid ectropion, retraction, and inferior punctal obliteration. The patient was previously diagnosed with a medial canthal basal cell carcinoma 1.5 years ago, but opted for self-treatment with black salve, a commonly used naturopathic "cure" for skin cancer. Each application resulted in increasingly severe periorbital inflammation with eventual eschar formation. Over time, this led to cicatricial band …

Case Report: Using basic liver function tests as a guide to suspected Wilson's disease.

We present a case of a 36-year-old female patient who presented with subacute liver disease with a history of alcohol abuse. On basic liver function tests (LFT), she had aspartate transaminase / alanine transaminase > 2.2 and alkaline phosphatase / total bilirubin < 4. This pattern in acute liver failure patients signifies Wilson's disease. Its presence in our patient with subacute liver disease also prompted us to suspect Wilson's disease and we extended the liver disease screen to include slit lamp eye examination for Kayser-Fleischer rings, serum ceruloplasmin and 24-hour urinary copper lev…

Seventeen years of annual distribution of ivermectin has not interrupted onchocerciasis transmission in North Region, Cameroon.

We studied onchocerciasis transmission and impact on ocular morbidity in three health districts in North Region, Cameroon, where annual mass ivermectin treatment has been provided for 12-17 years. The studies, which took place from 2008 to 2010, consisted of skin snips for microfilariae (mf), palpation examinations for nodules, slit lamp examinations for mf in the eye, and Simulium vector dissections for larval infection rates. Adults had mf and nodule rates of 4.8% and 13.5%, respectively, and 5.5% had mf in the anterior chamber of the eye. Strong evidence of ongoing transmission was found in…

Neovascular glaucoma following stereotactic radiosurgery for an optic nerve glioma: a case report.

A 13-year-old girl with a right intraorbital optic nerve glioma (ONG) was referred to our glaucoma clinic because of uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) in her right eye. The IOP reached as high as 80 mmHg. Several months earlier, she had undergone stereotactic image-guided robotic radiosurgery using the CyberKnife for her ONG; the mass had become smaller after treatment. Her visual acuity was no light perception. Slit lamp examination revealed rubeosis iridis, a swollen pale optic disc, and vitreous hemorrhage. After medical treatment, the IOP decreased to 34 mmHg, and no pain was reporte…

Identifying progression of subclinical keratoconus by serial topography analysis.

We performed serial slit-lamp examinations and topography analysis on a patient whose initial topographic map suggested a diagnosis of keratoconus to us but which others interpreted as normal topography. Topography analysis documented cone progression during a two-year period. The initial map showed a cone apex power of 44.5 diopters located 2.1 mm inferior to the vertex normal. An oblong-shaped area of maximum power was surrounded by concentric bands of lower power. Corneal surface power ranged from 41.5 to 44.5 diopters. Two years later cone apex power increased to 51.0 diopters, and the pat

A histologic study of lens regeneration in aphakic rabbits.

Lens regeneration occurs in New Zealand albino rabbits after endocapsular lens extraction, which leaves the anterior and posterior lens capsules relatively intact. Slit-lamp photography, histologic studies, and lens protein analysis confirmed the differentiation of lens fibers. In the current study, we performed a sequential analysis of the regenerating rabbit lens. After endocapsular phacoemulsification and irrigation/aspiration of the lens, rabbits were sacrificed at different time points for histologic evaluation. Similarities with embryologic development of the lens were evident, although
