A 30-year-old woman presented with progressive dyspnea on exertion and a rapidly-growing uterine mass. Chest x-ray examination revealed a miliary interstitial nodular pattern in both lung fields. Transbronchial biopsy yielded lung tissue containing multiple nodules of smooth muscle, consistent with benign metastasizing leiomyoma. Subsequent hysterectomy revealed an atypical cellular leiomyoma. We wish to emphasize the need for chest x-ray examination in the workup of uterine tumors in women of reproductive age.

Fibrolipoma of the spermatic cord is extremely rare. A case of giant fibrolipoma of the right spermatic cord is reported here. A 68-year-old man noticed a mass in the right inguinal region, and was admitted to Shizuoka City Shimizu Hospital. Tumorectomy and right orchiectomy were performed. Grossly, the tumor was a well-defined, yellowish white, solid, firm tumor measuring 13 x 10 x 9 cm. The tumor had a thin capsule. The tumor was attached to the right spermatic cord, and was remote from the right testis and epididymis. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of mature adipose tissue (40% in

This case report is about a 47-year-old patient, who was diagnosed with intracardiac intravenous leiomyomatosis and received treatment at our institution. Intravenous leiomyomatosis is a rare, histologically benign, uterine neoplasm, which is characterized by non-invasive intravascular proliferation of smooth muscle cells. Intravenous leiomyomatosis arises from the myometrium and, in its most extensive form, can reach the heart via the pelvic veins and the inferior vena cava, causing hemodynamic complications. Treatment of choice is the complete resection of the tumor, even though there is no

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical feature, diagnostic and therapeutic methods of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor(IMT).
METHOD: One case of IMT was reported and the relevant literatures were reviewed.
RESULT: The computed tomography scan showed irregular soft tissue density shade and aggressive bone destruction with unclear boundary. Pathological findings showed variable numbers of inflammatory cells and myofibroblastic spindle cells. Tumor cells were immunoreactive for vimentin and smooth muscle actin, but negative for desmin et al.
CONCLUSION: IMT of the maxillary sinus is very rar

We herein present the clinicopathological features of an atypical cellular unguioblastic fibroma, a rare onychomatrical tumor, in an adult woman of Southeast Asian origin. The tumor displayed both diffuse hypercellularity and atypia in the mesenchymal component and the presence of large multinucleated cells with a ring-/floret-like arrangement of irregular and hyperchromatic nuclei. The mesenchymal cells displayed a patchy weak positive immunereactivity for CD34 (including atypical and wreath-like multinucleated cells) and for CD10 but were negative for low molecular weight cytokeratins, epith

Aggressive angiomyxoma is a distinctive, locally aggressive tumor associated with a high risk of local recurrences that lacks metastatic potential. This tumor occurs mostly in the soft tissues of the pelvis and the perineum of adult women. It may rarely occur at less common sites, such as the vagina, urinary bladder, and soft tissue of the perineum and the perianal region in men, particularly the scrotum. We report a case of aggressive angiomyxoma presenting as an endometrial uterine polyp. To the best of our knowledge, the primary location of aggressive angiomyxoma within the uterine cavity h

Benign mesenchymoma is an uncommon tumor containing at least two or more differentiated mesenchymal elements in addition to fibrous tissue. The case we presented here is a 60-year-old male who suffered from a superior posterior mediastinal mesenchymal tumor composed predominantly of mature adipose tissue separated by fascicular bundles of spindle cells admixed with cartilage and osseous tissue. The spindle cells were confirmed to be smooth muscle in nature by trichrome Masson stain and immunohistochemical studies, providing a picture consistent with that of benign mesenchymoma. Intravenous leiomyomatosis is a rare uterine neoplasm characterized by nodular or wormlike masses of histologically benign smooth muscle growing within myometrial veins and extending variable distances into the veins of contiguous organs and major pelvic veins. In some cases, there has been extension into the gonadal or iliac veins to the vena cava and right atrium, causing symptoms of congestive heart failure and an eventual fatal outcome. We present a report of the first case in which high-output cardiac failure was caused by the development of arteriovenous shunting within the intravenous c

Gastrointestinal (GI) stromal tumors (GISTs), the specific KIT- or PDFGRA-signaling driven mesenchymal tumors, are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the GI tract. This study analyzed 1091 tumors originally classified as smooth muscle tumors of the small intestine (including jejunum or ileum and excluding duodenum), and found that 906 (83%) of these were GISTs. The GIST patients had 55:45 male-to-female ratio with a median age of 59 years (range, 13-94 years). Only 0.6% of tumors occurred before the age of 21 years and 13.6% before the age of 40 years. The tumors varied from 0.3 to 40 cm (m…

Uterine fibroids, also referred to as leiomyomas, are benign uterine tumors with a lifetime prevalence of approximately 75% depending on race, age, and a variety of genetic and environmental factors. Extra-uterine leiomyomas are uncommon, and their occurrence within the rectus abdominis muscle is exceptionally rare. We present a rare case of an incidental rectus abdominis leiomyoma discovered during emergency cesarean section. A 28-year-old female (G3P1 + 1, living 1) presented to our specialty hospital in Northern Tanzania at 38 weeks and 1 day of gestation with complaints of lower abdominal

BACKGROUND: Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma (LGMS) is described as a distinct atypical myofibroblastic tumor often with fibromatosis-like features and predilection for the head and neck, especially the oral cavity and larynx. LGMS arising in the levator scapulae muscle is extremely rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because she noticed a hard mass in her left neck six months prior. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) showed a soft tissue tumor of the left levator scapulae muscle. A core needle biopsy showed cellular fascicles or a storiform growth pattern

BACKGROUND: Primary sarcomas of the uterus are uncommon, leiomyosarcoma being the most frequent. Most uterine sarcomas arise de novo, with malignant transformation of a benign mesenchymal tumor being a very rare event, and is reported only in leiomyomata.
DESIGN: The clinicopathologic features of 3 uterine liposarcomas arising in association with a lipoleiomyoma were studied. Immunohistochemistry for desmin, h-caldesmon, S100, and MDM2, and fluorescence in situ hybridization for the t(12;16) (q13;p11) were performed in all cases.
RESULT: Patients ranged in age from 49 to 70 (mean, 59) years.

Transforming growth factor-betas (TGF betas) are multifunctional peptides that regulate growth and differentiation in a variety of cells. The goals of this study were to compare expression of the TGF beta isoforms in normal myometrium and benign leiomyoma tumors of the uterus and to examine the effects of TGF betas on cell proliferation and collagen production by these cells in vitro. Myometrium and leiomyoma tissues were obtained from patients undergoing elective hysterectomies. Tissues were processed for ribonucleic acid (RNA) and were also established as primary cell cultures. Northern blot

INTRODUCTION: Adult intussusception is rare. Unlike in pediatric cases, adult intussusception typically arises from an underlying pathology. Primary jejunal leiomyosarcoma is an exceptionally rare malignant tumor originating from the smooth muscle cells of the small intestine.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old man presented with signs and symptoms of acute intestinal obstruction, including abdominal pain, constipation, vomiting, and abdominal distension of 2 days duration. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a jejunojejunal intussusception with a lead-point intraluminal mass. Explor

PURPOSE: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a devastating urological chronic pelvic pain condition. In search of a potential treatment, we investigated the effect of emodin on IC/BPS inflammation and fibrosis, and explore the potential mechanism.
METHODS: An experimental model of interstitial cystitis was induced by cyclophosphamide, and human bladder smooth muscle cells were treated with lipopolysaccharide to establish the cell model in vitro. In both models, inflammation- and fibrosis-related indexes were measured after emodin administration. Furthermore, the specific a

(1) Background: Ocimum basilicum L. is an aromatic medicinal plant of the Lamiaceae family known as sweet basil. It is used in traditional medicine for its beneficial effects on gastrointestinal disorders, inflammation, immune system, pyrexia or cancer among others. Ocimum basilicum (OB) leaf extracts contain many phytochemicals bearing the plant health effects but no reports is available on the potential bioactivity of stem extracts. Our investigation aimed at assessing the differential biological activity between basil leaf and stem to promote this co-product valorization. (2) Method: For th

Diabetic bladder dysfunction (DBD) is common and affects 80% of diabetic patients. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying DBD remain elusive because of a lack of appropriate animal models. We demonstrate DBD in a mouse model that harbors hepatic-specific insulin receptor substrate 1 and 2 deletions (double knockout [DKO]), which develops type 2 diabetes. Bladders of DKO animals exhibited detrusor overactivity at an early stage: increased frequency of nonvoiding contractions during bladder filling, decreased voided volume, and dispersed urine spot patterns. In contrast, older animals with

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), a rare cystic lung disease with multi-organ involvement, occurs primarily in women of childbearing age. LAM can present sporadically or in association with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Loss of lung function in patients with LAM can be attributed to the dysregulated growth of LAM cells, with dysfunctional TSC1 or TSC2 genes, which encode hamartin and tuberin, respectively, leading to hyperactivation of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). LAM cells are smooth muscle-like cells that express melanoma antigens such as gp100, a splice variant of the Pmel17

Our previous studies indicate that apoptosis in endothelial cells of major cerebral arteries contributes to cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). This study examined the pathologic roles of tumor suppressor p-53 in cerebral vasospasm using an established dog double-hemorrhage model. Twenty mongrel dogs were divided into four groups: (1) control, (2) SAH, (3) SAH+DMSO (vehicle), and (4) SAH+pifithrin-alpha (PFT) (p53 inhibitor). The p53 inhibitor (200 nmol/L) was injected into the cisterna magna daily from Day 0 through Day 3. Angiogram was performed on Day 0 and Day 7. Wester
