Children with disability are a heterogeneous population distributed between complex conditions including physical disorders, psychomotor and neurodevelopment disorders, social role and school activities limitations. Prenatal, perinatal and neonatal diseases together with disabling chronic conditions may cause childhood disability. Data from literature show a prevalence of childhood disability ranging from 5 to 20% with a wide range of severity level. The social impact of childhood disability is extremely relevant. Children with disabilities frequently require health care services and special e

Effects on the motor function and social life of the patients after Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) were studied. A letter of inquiry was sent to the patients in November 2001; 98 patients responded validly. The questionnaire had questions with 3 possible answers related to situations at work, at home, and about leisure activities. The Hughes functional grade, which evaluates physical conditions, and arm disability scale scores were assessed. Although the assessments showed good recovery in most patients who had had a job, 31% had to quit work, and 17% had to discontinue their leisure activities

BACKGROUND: Natural disasters have long-term negative impacts on the health and socioenvironmental conditions of a population, affecting the physical environment as well as the relationships within the community, including social networks. Mothers in post-disaster communities may have difficulty receiving social support not only from family members and relatives but also from members of their community, such as people in their neighborhoods. This study focused on mothers with infants and preschool-aged children in post-disaster communities. The associations of social support with sociodemograp

OBJECTIVE: Community studies have failed to confirm that biochemically assessed thyroid status is significantly associated with psychopathology. However, it has been reported that self-reported thyroid disease is associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety. The objective of the current study was to determine whether self-reported thyroid disease is associated with elevated mental disorder prevalence in the general population.
METHOD: Data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) 1.2: Mental Health and Well-being were used. The CCHS 1.2 included the World Mental Health version o

BACKGROUND: Patients with uncommon genetic conditions often face limited in-person resources for social and informational support. Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) is a rare or underdiagnosed hereditary disorder of the connective tissue, and like those with similar diseases, patients with hEDS have begun to turn to social media in search of care and community. The aims of our study were to understand the usage habits and perceptions of utility of social media use for patients with hEDS in order to formulate suggestions for how clinicians may best engage these and similar patient popul

OBJECTIVE: Social anxiety disorder is common and impairing. The efficacy of pharmacotherapy is moderate, highlighting the need for alternative therapies. This study compared the efficacy of gaze-contingent music reward therapy (GC-MRT), an eye-tracking-based attention bias modification treatment, with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment or a waiting list control condition in reducing social anxiety disorder symptoms. Superior clinical effects of similar magnitude were expected for the active treatments relative to the control condition.

BACKGROUND: In studies that measure social behavior of a freely interacting pair rats social behavior of one rat is strongly influenced by the behavior of the other. This prevents evaluating social behavior of one single rat.
NEW METHOD: We assessed the motivation to interact socially in a modified open-field, by measuring the time a rat attempted to interact with a co-specific separated by a grid in a birdcage outside of the apparatus. We propose time in front of the birdcage is an indicator of social behavior.
RESULTS: We showed that the focal rat allocates more time in front of the birdca

OBJECTIVE: Acute changes in social belonging are important triggers for alterations in health and well-being, yet research has emphasised the negative effects of 'exclusion' at the expense of evaluating the potentially positive effects of 'inclusion'. This study examined the impact of acute belonging on physiological and psychological outcomes.
DESIGN AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A healthy population (N = 138) were randomly allocated to 'included' or 'excluded' conditions. Condition-dependent differences in pre/during-task heart rate and pre/post-task self-reports of negative/positive mood, and

BACKGROUND: People living with chronic kidney disease and kidney failure experience a wide range of challenging burdens, as many try to manage their condition effectively. Social isolation and loneliness are commonly associated with chronic kidney disease and kidney failure, and the restrictions of their disease make establishing social connections difficult. The impact of social isolation and loneliness can negatively affect a person's health and wellbeing in many ways.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct a mixed method systematic review of studies about social isolation and loneliness in people with chro

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a major age-related health condition that remains inadequately recognised as a public health concern. While previous studies have primarily focused on physical risk factors, limited evidence exists regarding the distinct contributions of social isolation and loneliness to sarcopenia development. This study investigates the individual and joint effects of social isolation and loneliness on sarcopenia.
METHODS: A total of 87 205 middle-aged and older adults from the Health and Retirement Study, the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, and the China Health

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the effects of causal explanations, information about treatability, and type of psychiatric diagnosis on how the public reacts to an individual described as having a specific mental illness versus subclinical distress.
METHODS: A 5 (mental health condition) × 2 (treatability) × 4 (causal explanation) vignette experiment was embedded in an online survey, followed by assessments of prognostic optimism and desire to maintain social distance from the vignette character. Data were collected, in late 2022, from a probability sample (N=1,607) represen

Social isolation has been shown to modify behavioral patterns and neuroendocrine function in many species. In this study, we examined the influence of post-weaning social isolation on the behavioral development and fecal testosterone and corticosterone levels of male Mongolian gerbils. In Experiment 1, isolation-reared (IR) males spent more time engaged in social-sniffing. IR males also showed more aggressive and anxiety-related behaviors than group-reared males (GR; three animals per cage). In Experiment 2, a screen-divided-reared condition (SDR) was examined in addition to GR (two males per

While breastfeeding-friendly policies aim to support employed mothers, limited research has examined how specific work environments, such as clean rooms, affect breastfeeding behavior. This study examined how clean room work affects breastfeeding behavior among 608 employed mothers in a Taiwanese electronics company. Data were collected on demographic and employment characteristics, breastfeeding behavior, awareness and use of lactation rooms, and perceptions of breastfeeding-related policies and support. Despite access to certified lactation rooms, clean room workers had lower breastfeeding c

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial well-being at work is a multidimensional construct associated with employee health, organizational functioning, sustainable workforce development, and population mental health. However, few theoretically integrated instruments simultaneously assess work-related resources, job demands, psychosocial risks, and employee subjective well-being. This study aimed to develop and conduct the initial validation of the Multidimensional Psychosocial Work Environment Scale for Employed Persons (MPWES), grounded in the OECD well-being framework, the WHO-5 conceptual approach, and th

Work and breastfeeding responsibilities can often interfere with each other for breastfeeding working mothers who pump breast milk at work. While prior research has explored how contextual social support and organizational policies help these mothers manage work-breastfeeding challenges, the active self-initiated strategies breastfeeding working mothers can use to navigate these roles have been largely overlooked. This study addresses a critical gap in how breastfeeding working mothers can proactively regulate their actions to achieve desirable outcomes. From an action regulation perspective,

Fear generalization has been identified as an important mechanism that might contribute to the etiology and maintenance of anxiety disorders. It is, however, yet unclear to what degree attentional processes contribute to overgeneralization of fear in clinical samples. To address this issue, we utilized a set of facial photographs that was meticulously created such that pairs of faces could either be distinguished by looking into the eyes or the region around mouth and nose, respectively. These pairs were then employed as CS+ and CS- in a differential fear conditioning paradigm followed by a ge

Research on preventive healthcare services among people with disability in Japan is scarce. This study aimed to (1) examine the relationship between disability and the use of general health examination (GHE) and cancer screening (lung, gastric, colorectal, breast and cervical cancer) and (2) explore the reasons for not using GHE. This cross-sectional study used secondary data from individuals aged 20-74 years (n = 15,294) from the Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions of 2016. Binomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between disability and non-partici

The direction of the eye gaze of others is a prominent social cue in primates and is important for communication1-11. Although gaze can signal threat and elicit anxiety6,12,13, it remains unclear whether it shares neural circuitry with stimulus value. Notably, gaze not only has valence, but can also serve as a predictor of the outcome of a social encounter, which can be either negative or positive2,8,12,13. Here we show that the neural codes for gaze and valence overlap in primates and that they involve two different mechanisms: one for the outcome and another for its expectation. Monkeys part

Vaccine hesitancy is growing worldwide and hampering efforts to control vaccine-preventable diseases. Healthcare professionals have a critical role in the acceptance of vaccination by patients. Increased awareness about the benefits of vaccination is one of the recommended strategy to counter vaccine hesitancy. Beyond protection of individuals against specific pathogens, vaccination have broad benefits at multiple levels of society, partly mediated by community protection. These benefits include improved access to education, increased productivity and positive fiscal impact, limitation of gend

Loneliness can be evaluated from a 4-concept viewpoint of territory, threat, trauma and trust (4 Ts). Territory refers to an area of ownership that is controlled on a daily basis and is fundamental to one's daily life. Lonely individuals often manage boundaries by gaining greater control over their physical environment by territorial behavior. They guard personal territory well as the only area where they can exert dominance and feel safe. Perceptions of social isolation or loneliness increase vigilance for threats, decrease trust, and heighten feelings of vulnerability. Clinical teams caring
