Decreased structural connectivity and resting-state brain activity in the lateral occipital cortex is associated with social communication deficits in boys with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by atypical social communication and repetitive behaviors. In this study, we applied a multimodal approach to investigate brain structural connectivity, resting state activity, and surface area, as well as their associations with the core symptoms of ASD. Data from forty boys with ASD (mean age, 11.5 years; age range, 5.5-19.5) and forty boys with typical development (TD) (mean age, 12.3; age range, 5.8-19.7) were extracted from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange II (ABIDE II) for data analysis. We foun

Social Determinants and Teen Pregnancy Prevention: Exploring the Role of Nontraditional Partnerships.

Addressing the social determinants of health (SDOH) that influence teen pregnancy is paramount to eliminating disparities and achieving health equity. Expanding prevention efforts from purely individual behavior change to improving the social, political, economic, and built environments in which people live, learn, work, and play may better equip vulnerable youth to adopt and sustain healthy decisions. In 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in partnership with the Office of Adolescent Health funded state- and community-based organizations to develop and implement the Teen Preg

Multidimensional Social Isolation and All-Cause Mortality Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults in China: Gender and Rural-Urban Differences.

This study examines whether multidimensional social isolation is associated with all-cause mortality and explores whether these associations vary by gender and rural-urban residence in China. Using nationally representative longitudinal data from 12,686 adults aged 45 and older in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2020), we estimated Cox proportional hazards models examining social isolation as structural disconnectedness across five domains: partnership status, contact with parents, contact with children, contact with friends, and social participation. Social isolation

The amygdala and development of the social brain.

The amygdala comprises part of an extended network of neural circuits that are critically involved in the processing of socially salient stimuli. Such stimuli may be explicitly social, such as facial expressions, or they may be only tangentially social, such as abstract shapes moving with apparent intention relative to one another. The coordinated interplay between neural activity in the amygdala and other brain regions, especially the medial prefrontal cortex, the occipitofrontal cortex, the fusiform gyrus, and the superior temporal sulcus, allows us to develop social responses and to engage

Walking with the illness and life: Experience of the community life of people previously under the services of an integrated community mental health service.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: There have been some studies on the experience and community life of mental health clients receiving integrated community mental health service (ICMHS). Evaluation of ICMHS suggests that the service could have positive clinical and social outcomes, but the results are inconclusive. WHAT DOES THE PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Research studies have focused on clients and/or staff of the ICMHS, while in this study, the experiences and perspectives of family members are also explored. More comprehensive knowledge about the work for, and community life of, people

Predictors of community reintegration and quality of life after hip fracture among community-dwelling older adults.

We aim to explore factors contributing to community reintegration and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among community-dwelling older adults three months after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation following hip fracture. We performed a prospective cohort study with follow-up. Thirty-three consecutive patients (age 66-89) after surgery for hip fracture repair were recruited from an inpatient rehabilitation unit. Participants were 65+ years old, did not have dementia, and were independent in basic activities of daily living (BADL) at discharge. We examined the contribution of independen

The Current Status of Research on the Integration of Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV Services.

Integration of services for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and HIV has been widely promoted globally in the belief that both clients and health providers benefit through improvements in quality, efficient use of resources, and lower costs, helping to maximize limited health resources and provide comprehensive client-centered care. This article builds on the growing body of research on integrated sexual SRH and HIV services. It brings together critical reviews on issues within the wider SRH and rights agenda and synthesizes recent research on integrated services, drawing on the Integra In

The effectiveness of a Housing First adaptation for ethnic minority groups: findings of a pragmatic randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the effectiveness of Housing First (HF) among ethnic minority groups, despite its growing popularity for homeless adults experiencing mental illness. This randomized controlled trial tests the effectiveness of a HF program using rent supplements and intensive case management, enhanced by anti-racism and anti-oppression practices for homeless adults with mental illness from diverse ethnic minority backgrounds. METHODS: This unblinded pragmatic field trial was carried out in community settings in Toronto, Canada. Participants were 237 adults from ethnic minorit

Beyond the medical home: Special Care Family Academy for children and youth.

Children and youth with special health care needs require more health care and related services and consequently incur more costs than other individuals. Implementation of the "medical home" concept has benefitted children with special needs, resulting in fewer unmet medical needs and more consistent health care delivery. As advances in health care have enabled an increasingly higher percentage of children with special needs to live far into adulthood, the transition from adolescence to adulthood poses new challenges in obtaining medical care, education, job training, and employment opportunit

Patients' experiences and perceived outcomes of manual therapy: a qualitative systematic review with framework synthesis.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically synthesize qualitative evidence on patient-reported experiences of manual therapies (including massage therapy, osteopathic manipulation, and craniosacral therapy) across biological, psychological, and social dimensions. We aimed to identify patient-perceived outcomes, contextual factors influencing the therapeutic process, and hypothesized mechanisms underlying patient experiences, thereby constructing an integrated conceptual framework centered on patient narratives. METHODS: A systematic search of Chinese and English databases was conducted from inception to Ma

Understanding digital diffusion and online decision-making in public health promotion: a sequential mixed-methods study of the violence prevention charter in Canada.

Digital environments have become important settings for public health promotion, yet dissemination alone does not explain why individuals and organizations choose to adopt and act on public health information. Understanding digital diffusion requires attention to temporal patterns of adoption, the social networks through which information and influence circulate, and the contextual conditions that shape decision-making. This sequential mixed-methods single case study examined the dissemination and voluntary adoption of the Violence Prevention Charter, a principles-based public health initiativ

Sustaining community self-help groups beyond donor support: lessons from a qualitative study of self-help groups, including persons affected by leprosy and disability in rural India.

INTRODUCTION: Leprosy remains a significant public health challenge in many low and middle-income countries, including India. People affected by leprosy face multifaceted challenges: physical, psychological, social and economic. In response, donors support self-help groups (SHGs) to improve health, social integration and economic circumstances for marginalised people, including those with leprosy. This study aims to assess the sustainability of SHGs in India after the withdrawal of donor support by examining whether they remain functional and exploring the key factors, barriers and facilitator…

Psilocybin-assisted therapy improves psycho-social-spiritual well-being in cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: While psychedelics have been shown to improve psycho-spiritual well-being, the underlying elements of this change are not well-characterized. The NIH-HEALS posits that psycho-social-spiritual change occurs through the factors of Connection, Reflection & Introspection, and Trust & Acceptance. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in NIH-HEALS scores in a cancer population with major depressive disorder undergoing psilocybin-assisted therapy. METHODS: In this Phase II, single-center, open label trial, 30 cancer patients with major depressive disorder received a fixed dose of 25 m

[Potential analysis of research on speech therapy-led communication training in aphasia following stroke].

HEALTH PROBLEM: In Germany, about 100,000 people currently suffer from aphasia. This speech disorder occurs as a result of neurologic events such as stroke or traumatic brain injury. Aphasia causes major limitations in social participation and quality of life and can be associated with unemployability and social isolation. For affected persons, it is essential to regain and maintain autonomy in daily life, both at work and with family and friends. The loss of autonomy is perceived much more dramatically than the loss of speech. Clients wish to minimise this loss of autonomy in daily life. As f
