When is it socially acceptable to feel sick?

Disease is a ubiquitous and powerful evolutionary force. Hosts have evolved behavioural and physiological responses to disease that are asso … exts, such as the presence of mates, caring for offspring, competing for territories or maintaining social status, affect the expression of sickness behaviours. Exploiting the circumstances that promote this behavioural plasticity will provide new insights into the evolutionary ecology of social behaviours. A deeper understanding of when and how this modulation …

Lower subjective status is associated with reduced satiation and satiety among children and adolescents: A laboratory study.

OBJECTIVE: Subjective status represents one's perceptions of their social/socioeconomic standing compared to others. Low subjective status is associated with higher energy intake and body mass, independent of objective status indicators. Low subjective status could be blunting sensations of satiation/satiety, which may spur energy intake. However, there is limited research directly examining the role of subjective status on satiation and satiety, especially in children. We cross-sectionally examined whether subjective socioeconomic status (SSES) and subjective social status (SSS) are independe…

Socioeconomic trends in anxiolytic, hypnotic, and sedative use among secondary school students in Spain from 2010 to 2021: a repeated cross-sectional design.

BACKGROUND: The increasing use of anxiolytics, hypnotics, and sedatives (AHS) among adolescents is a growing public health concern. Social determinants such as gender or socioeconomic status have a significant influence on consumption levels. However, whether trends in adolescent AHS use show socioeconomic and gender disparities is unknown. The aim of this study is to examine the trends in gender and socioeconomic inequalities in secondary school students' AHS use in Spain from 2010 to 2021. METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the Survey on Drug Use in S

Associations between physical activity, socioeconomic and sociodemographic factors, and risk of sarcopenia in older adults in Northeast Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a progressive musculoskeletal disorder linked to physical disability, reduced quality of life, and increased mortality in older adults. While malnutrition is a well-established risk factor, understanding the behavioral (i.e., individual choices and habits) and social determinants of sarcopenia is crucial for designing effective public health strategies. This study investigates the associations between physical activity, sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors, and risk of sarcopenia in older adults living in Ceará, northeast Brazil. METHODOLOGY: This cross-section

A multidimensional framework for mapping social need to electronic health records in people with multimorbidity.

Social needs are sociocultural and economic factors influencing health and quality of life, including, for example, mobility limitations or financial difficulties. Multimorbidity - the presence of two or more long-term conditions (LTCs) - is an increasing public health challenge, with social needs often compounding the negative health outcomes associated with multimorbidity. In this study, we present a novel multidimensional framework for identifying and characterising social needs within a population-based cohort of adults with multimorbidity in England, utilising data from the Clinical Pract

Frailty as a Moderator of the Relationship between Social Isolation and Health Outcomes in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

This research investigated the effects of social isolation on frailty and health outcomes and tested whether these associations varied across different levels of frailty. We performed a multivariate analysis of the first wave of Frailty: A longitudinal study of its expressions (FRéLE) among 1643 Canadian older adults aged 65 years and over. We assessed social isolation using social participation, social networks, and support from various social ties, namely, friends, children, extended family, and partner. Frailty was associated with disability, comorbidity, depression, and cognitive decline.
