BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is a relatively common cancer in Malaysia, particularly in men, but there is little research exploring its impact from the perspective of patients. This study sought to highlight experiences from the perspectives of male patients receiving treatment for NPC in Malaysia in relation to swallowing and communication. METHODS: Nine males with NPC (age range 49–73) were recruited from a single hospital in Malaysia. Individual interviews were conducted by a trained undergraduate research assistant and guided by a semi-structured interview guide. Transcribed dat

BACKGROUND: A multidisciplinary team comprising providers from several specialties is needed for comprehensive cleft care. Although multidisciplinary cleft teams may be readily available in high-income countries, in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), there are often barriers preventing patients from accessing and receiving treatment from multidisciplinary teams. The purpose of this article is to discuss technology's role in facilitating the sustainability of multidisciplinary cleft care in low-resource settings.
METHODS: A review of the current literature, observation of teams in LMICs

The logopenic variant of Primary Progressive Aphasia (lvPPA), a syndromic disorder centered on language impairment, often presents variable underlying neurodegenerative pathologies such as Alzheimer Disease (AD). Actual language assessment tests and lumbar puncture, focused on AD diagnosis, cannot precisely distinguish the symptoms, or predict their progression at onset time. We analyzed acoustic markers, aiming to discriminate lvPPA and AD as well as the influence of AD biomarkers on acoustic profiles at the beginning of the disease. We recruited people with AD (n = 8) and with lvPPA (n = 8),

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a cognitive syndrome characterized by progressive and isolated language impairments due to neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, an international group of experts published a Consensus Classification of the three PPA clinical variants (naPPA, svPPA and lvPPA). We analyzed 24 patients with PPA by cognitive functions, neuroimaging (MRI, (99 m)Tc ECD-SPECT, (11)C PiB-PET and FDG-PET) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis (ptau-181, Aβ1-42, Aβ1-40 and Aβ1-38), to elucidate relationships between neuroimaging studies and biochemical findings in the three PPA cli

PURPOSE: Dysphagia is a common and debilitating side effect for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT) with or without chemotherapy ([C]RT) and is associated with nutritional and emotional comorbidities. Emotional sequelae and distress are also known to affect carers of HNC patients. A weekly, joint speech pathology/dietetic (SP/DN) service-delivery model has been employed to manage swallowing/nutritional and associated emotional issues during (C)RT. This study aimed to conduct a service evaluation of the weekly SP/DN clinical model.
METHODS: Cross-sectional sampling

INTRODUCTION: Patients with classic-onset corticobasal syndrome (CBS) present with asymmetric limb apraxia and parkinsonism. We have, however, observed patients who initially present with speech and/or language (SL) problems and several years later develop CBS (i.e., SL-onset CBS). We aimed to compare clinical, neuroimaging and pathological characteristics of classic-onset CBS with SL-onset CBS.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 62 patients who met criteria for CBS (17 presented with classic-onset CBS and 45 had SL-onset CBS). We compared demographics, clinical characteris

OBJECTIVES: Paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) is a common condition where the vocal folds inappropriately adduct during inspiration. This results in dyspnea and occasionally significant distress. The condition is thought to be primarily functional, with behavioural therapy considered mainstay in the non-acute setting. However, practice variations and limited access to speech language pathology (SLP) services can pose management challenges. We aimed to examine the efficacy of surgeon performed visual biofeedback as first-line treatment for PVFM.
