Hired crop worker injuries on farms in the United States: A comparison of two survey periods from the National Agricultural Workers Survey.

BACKGROUND: Hired crop workers in the United States are at high risk of occupational injury. Targeted surveillance is important for effective occupational safety efforts. METHODS: The National Agricultural Workers Survey was utilized to collect injury data during the years 1999, 2002-2004 (period I) and 2008-2010 (period II). RESULTS: The overall injury rate declined between the two periods from 4.3 to 2.9/100 per full-time week-based equivalents (FTEWB ). Injury rates remained high during both periods for those with greater than 20 years farm experience (3.6 and 3.8/100 FTEWB ) and pesticid

Neck pain.

Six conditions cause most of the neck pain complaints seen by primary care physicians: cervical muscle strain or sprain, torticollis, acceleration injury, myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome, and cervical osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Most of them can be diagnosed and treated by the primary care physician. Of the more unusual causes, one should not miss a clinical fracture; a herniated cervical disc, spinal cord compression from a disc, or epidural tumor; infection of the disc or the vertebral body; subluxation of the vertebral bodies; or pain referred from the chest or mediastinal

Interventional spine procedures in athletes.

Back pain is common in athletes and a source of missed time from practice and competition. Pain generators include muscle (strain), ligament (myofascial sprain and strain), intervertebral disc (herniation and degeneration), nerve (radiculopathy), joint (facet and sacroiliac (SI) joint), and bones (pars interarticularis defect). The goal of treatment of an athlete with back pain is to relieve symptoms and facilitate safe but rapid return to play with no change in performance. Initial conservative treatment includes relative rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy. The use of i

Magnetic resonance imaging of sports injuries of the elbow.

Many abnormalities seen in the elbow result from trauma, often from sports such as baseball and tennis. Elbow problems are frequently related to the medial tension-lateral compression phenomenon, where repeated valgus stress produces flexor-pronator strain, ulnar collateral ligament sprain, ulnar traction spurring, and ulnar neuropathy. Lateral compression causes osteochondral lesions of the capitellum and radial head, degenerative arthritis, and loose bodies. Other elbow abnormalities seen on magnetic resonance imaging include radial collateral ligament injuries, biceps and triceps tendon inj

Track and Field Injuries: Imaging Aspects.

Track and field sports, also known as athletics, encompassing sports modalities such as running, jumping, and throwing, is a highly demanding sport with significant risk of injury. This review discusses the epidemiology, imaging techniques, and especially typical injury patterns associated with various track and field disciplines. Elite athletes, who undergo rigorous training and repetitive high-impact activities, are particularly prone to musculoskeletal injuries, with lower extremity injuries, such as muscle strains, ligament sprains, and bone stress injuries, the most common. Injury pattern

Common Running Injuries: Evaluation and Management.

Running is a common form of exercise but predisposes athletes to several running-related injuries. Most running injuries are due to overuse and respond to conservative treatment. Tendinopathies in the patellar, Achilles, and hamstring tendons are common, and are primarily treated with eccentric exercise. Iliotibial band syndrome and patellofemoral pain syndrome are less common than patellar tendinopathy and are treated by strengthening exercises for the core and legs in addition to flexibility exercises. Acute hamstring strains and medial tibial stress syndrome require a period of relative res

Treating Geriatric Sports Injury Among Pickleball Players: A Narrative Review of an Exercise Craze Among Seniors.

The sudden and enormous popularity of pickleball has included a surprising and large contingent of geriatric players. Similar to tennis and badminton, pickleball is a game with a short learning curve that offers low-impact cardiovascular benefits. Unlike tennis, most injuries in pickleball are sustained by older rather than younger players. In fact, pickleball-related injuries increase with increasing age. Such injuries include strains, sprains, joint pain, falls, and fractures. The most affected joints are the wrists, shoulders, knees, and ankles. Clinicians can advise their older pickleball

Surfboard-riding injuries.

The results of a study aimed at determining the nature, rate, and cause of traumatic surfing injuries by gathering injury data directly from surfers rather than by retrospective analysis of hospital or first-aid station records are reported. Three hundred and forty-six surfers of varying ages, experience, and competence reported 337 injuries sustained over a two-year period. The most common injuries requiring medical attention or resulting in inability to surf were lacerations (41%) and soft-tissue injuries (35%). The high incidence of back and shoulder sprains and strains has not previously b…
