Assessment of retinal and optic disc microvasculature after strabismus surgery by optical coherence tomography angiography.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Strabismus surgery may lead to haemodynamic changes in the retina and optic nerve head which could affect eye function. BACKGROUND: To investigate the possible haemodynamic changes of the retina and optic disc after horizontal strabismus surgery using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: 37 eyes of 20 patients who underwent horizontal rectus muscle recession surgery were included to this prospective study. Demographic features, ophthalmological exam including strabismus findings were noted. OCTA examinations were performed preoperatively, postoperativ…

Ophthalmic phenotype and strabismus surgery in Angelman syndrome: genotype-specific risks and uniform surgical efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Ophthalmic manifestations in Angelman syndrome (AS)-particularly strabismus surgical outcomes and genotype-phenotype correlations-remain inadequately characterized due to limited cohort sizes in prior studies. METHODS: This 6-year (2018-2024) retrospective cohort study analyzed 40 genetically confirmed AS patients undergoing strabismus surgery, stratified by molecular subtype: deletion (15q11.2-q13del [n = 27]) and nondeletion (UBE3A mutations/UPD15pat/imprinting defects [n = 13]). Outcomes included refractive errors, iris hypopigmentation (novel grading on a scale of 0-4 adapted …

Combined Orbital Decompression and Rectus Muscle Myectomy for Large-Angle Strabismus in Thyroid-Associated Orbitopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) often causes restrictive strabismus and diplopia. Large-angle deviations pose particular challenges owing to extraocular muscle fibrosis and unpredictable surgical dose-response. Although combined orbital decompression and strabismus correction has been proposed to reduce the number of procedures, its effectiveness in large-angle TAO remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of combined orbital decompression and rectus muscle myectomy in this population. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 88 patients with TAO-asso…

Strabismus surgery under local anaesthesia at a tertiary eye hospital: a 5-year case review.

PURPOSE: Strabismus surgery is traditionally performed under general anesthesia (GA), however this is not safe or suitable for many patients. There has been increasing interest in strabismus surgery under local anesthesia (LA), however large datasets comprehensively exploring what is feasible under LA are lacking. METHODS: We identified 440 operations performed under LA at a tertiary eye center over a 5-year period from 2020 to 2024 and performed a retrospective review of surgical notes for all cases. Further in-depth analysis of anaesthetic notes was performed for a subset of 153 LA cases an…

High-Accuracy Intermittent Strabismus Screening via Wearable Eye-Tracking and AI-Enhanced Ocular Feature Analysis.

An effective and highly accurate strabismus screening method is expected to identify potential patients and provide timely treatment to prevent further deterioration, such as amblyopia and even permanent vision loss. To satisfy this need, this work showcases a novel strabismus screening method based on a wearable eye-tracking device combined with an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm. To identify the minor and occasional inconsistencies in strabismus patients during the binocular coordination process, which are usually seen in early-stage patients and rarely recognized in current studies, …

Case Report: Third eyelid flap for correction of proptosis-induced lateral strabismus in two dogs.

This case report describes the use of a third eyelid flap to correct proptosis-induced lateral strabismus in two dogs: a 3-year-old castrated male Pomeranian (Case 1) and a 2-year-old intact female Bichon Frise (Case 2). In both cases, the third eyelid was sutured to the dorsolateral conjunctiva using a horizontal mattress suture. However, conjunctival elongation at the suture site compromised flap function, necessitating reoperation. In Case 2, a second horizontal mattress suture was added to improve stability. Following reoperation, Case 1 achieved complete correction of lateral strabismus b…

Bilateral sterile sub-tenon abscess with vicryl suture reaction following strabismus surgery: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: After strabismus surgery, infections and complications are uncommon but avoidable with the right aseptic measures. Rarely have cases of non-infectious sub-tenon abscesses been documented in the past; these cases need to be appropriately recognized and treated. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report we describe a case of bilateral sub-tenon abscess 4 weeks after medial rectus recession. Despite receiving topical antibiotics for 7 days, there was no improvement, and multiple conjunctival cultures and sensitivity showed no growth. Both eye's sub-tenon abscess was drained,…

Medial strabismus (esotropia) at rest associated with contralateral paramedian thalamic ischemic infarction in 2 dogs.

Pseudoabducens paralysis resulting in resting medial strabismus (esotropia) is a rare consequence of a contralateral paramedian thalamic ischemic infarction in people. To date, esotropia has been reported in dogs in association with ipsilateral abducens neuropathy or extraocular myopathy, but not secondary to thalamic lesions. A 7-year-old male neutered Border Collie and a 12-year-old female neutered cross-breed dog were presented with peracute nonprogressive vestibular ataxia. Neurological examination identified right esotropia, nonambulatory tetraparesis, right head tilt, vestibular ataxia a…
