Complicated grief in those bereaved by violent death: the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder on complicated grief.

Violent death, such as homicide, accident, and suicide, is sudden, unexpected, and caused by intentional power, The prevalence of complicated grief among those bereaved by violent death is 12.5% to 78.0%. The factors affecting this prevalence rate are considered to be comorbid mental disorders, lack of readiness for the death, difficulty in making sense of the death, high level of negative appraisal about the self and others, and various social stressors. Post-traumatic stress disorder is, in particular, considered to contribute to the development of complicated grief by suppressing function o

What explains post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in UK service personnel: deployment or something else?

BACKGROUND: In previous studies an association between deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan and an overall increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in UK armed forces has not been found. The lack of a deployment effect might be explained by including, in the comparison group, personnel deployed on other operations or who have experienced traumatic stressors unrelated to deployment. METHODS: The sample comprised 8261 regular UK armed forces personnel who deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan or other operational areas or were not deployed. Participants completed the PTSD CheckList-Civilia

Complex contribution of combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder to veteran suicide: facing an increasing challenge.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this case study is to present the complex contribution of combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to suicide and international standards of treatment among veterans deployed to the Middle East. CONCLUSIONS: PTSD carries increased physical and psychological health risk in combat soldiers. Internationally, guidelines for PTSD promote cognitive behavior therapies, specifically exposure therapy, as first line treatment; however, implementation varies among countries. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Evidence supports the benefit of exposure-based psychotherapy for comb

Olanzapine versus fluphenazine in an open trial in patients with psychotic combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

RATIONALE: Combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often complicated with other psychiatric comorbidities, and is refractory to treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of an open, comparative 6-week study was to compare olanzapine and fluphenazine, as a monotherapy, for treating psychotic combat-related PTSD. METHOD: Fifty-five male war veterans with psychotic PTSD (DSM-IV criteria) were treated for 6 weeks with olanzapine (n=28) or fluphenazine (n=27) in a 5-10 mg/day dose range, once or twice daily. Patients were evaluated at baseline, and after 3 and 6 weeks of treatment, using Wats

Alexithymia and Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: The Mediation Roles of Self-Compassion and Deficits in Emotion Regulation.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a global mental health concern, with recent research focussing on the psychological mechanisms that contribute to its development and maintenance. Alexithymia, characterised by difficulty identifying and expressing emotions, has been identified as a potential risk factor for PTSD. This study was a preliminary investigation of a model of the relationship between alexithymia and PTSD symptoms, focussing on the potential mediating roles of self-compassion and difficulties in emotional regulation. Participants (N = 332), who were university students and mem

Association of Sleep Quality, Sleep Disturbances, and Chronotype with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Earthquake-Exposed Adolescents.

Background/Objectives: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common psychiatric consequence of trauma, and adolescents may be particularly vulnerable after large-scale disasters. Sleep disturbances and circadian preference may play a role in PTSD symptomatology. This study aimed to investigate the associations between PTSD, sleep quality, sleep problems, and chronotype in adolescents exposed to an earthquake. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 201 adolescents aged 12-18 years: 92 diagnosed with PTSD and 109 earthquake-exposed controls without a DSM-5 psychiatric disorder. Partic

Reframing nociplastic pain research and treatment using post-traumatic stress disorder-inspired conceptual models.

Pain and fear are aversive alarm signals that serve adaptive protective functions. Pathologically disproportionate fear or pain responses can lead to conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or chronic pain. Although they are distinct conditions, PTSD and chronic pain-particularly nociplastic pain-share common risk factors, vulnerability, and exhibit mutual maintenance. Moreover, there exist similarities in the clinical presentation and neurophysiology of PTSD and nociplastic pain that suggest a shared underlying pathophysiology. In this article, we review functional changes th

Variations of structural-functional coupling in post-traumatic stress disorder are associated with underlying molecular and transcriptional features.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a growing health problem whose neurobiology remains incompletely understood. Neuroimaging is useful in probing PTSD-related brain dysfunction, and techniques continue to evolve. Structural-functional coupling (SFC) offers a novel integrated perspective on PTSD neurobiology. We sought to define unique SFC alterations in PTSD and explore their associations with clinical symptoms, brain molecular architecture, and gene expression. METHODS: We studied 61 PTSD patients and 62 trauma-exposed non-PTSD controls (TENC) recruited from earthquake surv

Treatment as usual psychological therapy for complex post-traumatic stress disorder in National Health Services in Scotland.

OBJECTIVES: With Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) as a new diagnostic category, there is a diversity of interventions and influences on clinical practice, it is prudent that we gather information about current 'treatment as usual'. This study aims to address this need by describing the current clinical landscape of CPTSD treatments offered in NHS services in Scotland. METHODS: An online survey was distributed via heads of service managers to clinicians working with adults. The survey posed questions about psychological therapy models, professional experience and, for the clinici

The ventilatory response to arousal from sleep is elevated in young individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is reported to be more prevalent in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to the general population for unknown reasons. Most prior studies have assessed military populations who commonly possess other OSA risk factors. This study aimed to determine whether: 1) OSA prevalence is increased in young adults with PTSD symptoms exposed to non-military traumas; and 2) the ventilatory response to arousal from sleep - an OSA pathogenic trait - differs according to PTSD symptoms. METHODS: Individuals with a range of PTSD symptoms (PTSD symptom checklist fo

Impact of physical exercise interventions on post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Physical exercise has received increasing attention as a complementary approach for managing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Nevertheless, evidence regarding its effectiveness across different exercise modalities and populations remains mixed. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesizes findings to assess the impact of structured exercise programs on PTSD symptom severity and to explore potential moderators. METHODS: Searches of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and EBSCOhost-SportDiscus were conducted from inception to 27 September 2025. We inc

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder After Acute Cardiovascular Events: Protocol of a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: An aortic disease diagnosis can be perceived by patients as a stressful and often life-altering event. In addition, an acute event, such as aortic rupture or dissection-and the surgical intervention that will be required to address it-can be viewed as potentially life-threatening and traumatic. Serious health conditions, including stroke and acute coronary syndromes, have been described in the literature to correlate with trauma-like symptoms. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is well described in connection with external traumatic events, such as war, assault and similarly cat

Non-suicidal Self-Injury in the Context of Psoriasis, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and Acute Polysubstance Intoxication.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) during acute intoxication has been reported in association with stimulant and polysubstance use. Chronic somatic pain and trauma exposure may further increase vulnerability to impulsive self-injury. However, the intersection of inflammatory skin disease, addiction, and trauma-related pathology remains underdescribed in the clinical literature. We describe an unusual case of a hospitalized patient with psoriasis, post-traumatic stress disorder, and polysubstance use disorder who intentionally ignited psoriatic plaques during acute intoxication with cocaine, amphe
