Implementing and Evaluating the Timed Up and Go Test Automation Using Smartphones and Smartwatches.

Physical performance tests aim to assess the physical abilities and mobility skills of individuals for various healthcare purposes. They are often driven by experts and usually performed at their practice, and therefore they are resource-intensive and time-demanding. For tests based on objective measurements (e.g., duration, repetitions), technology can be used to automate them, allowing the patients to perform the test themselves, more frequently and anywhere, while alleviating the expert from supervising the test. The well-known Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, typically used for mobility assessm

Artificial Intelligence for Unstructured Healthcare Data: Application to Coding of Patient Reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions.

Adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting is a major component of drug safety monitoring; its input will, however, only be optimized if systems can manage to deal with its tremendous flow of information, based primarily on unstructured text fields. The aim of this study was to develop an automated system allowing to code ADRs from patient reports. Our system was based on a knowledge base about drugs, enriched by supervised machine learning (ML) models trained on patients reporting data. To train our models, we selected all cases of ADRs reported by patients to a French Pharmacovigilance Centre thr…

Learning to Rank for Selected Configuration Interaction.

Accurate description of electron correlation is a central challenge in computational chemistry, with selected configuration interaction (SCI) emerging as a powerful tool to approach the full CI limit. While recent machine learning (ML) integrations have accelerated determinant selection, existing regression and classification approaches suffer from a fundamental objective-loss mismatch: they evaluate the importance of determinants in isolation without explicitly accounting for their relative importance ranking. Here, we introduce ranking configuration interaction (RCI), a novel ML-supported SC

Automated Motor Tic Detection: A Machine Learning Approach.

BACKGROUND: Video-based tic detection and scoring is useful to independently and objectively assess tic frequency and severity in patients with Tourette syndrome. In trained raters, interrater reliability is good. However, video ratings are time-consuming and cumbersome, particularly in large-scale studies. Therefore, we developed two machine learning (ML) algorithms for automatic tic detection. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performances of state-of-the-art ML approaches for automatic video-based tic detection in patients with Tourette syndrome. METHODS: We used 64 vid

Explainable machine learning for mental health prediction from social media behavior: a nested cross-validation study with SHAP and LIME interpretability.

Social media behavior is a promising source of early indicators for psychological distress; however, predictive models often lack transparency, limiting their adoption in mental health settings. This paper describes an explainable machine learning framework for predicting self-reported depression risk based on behavioral features collected from 481 anonymized social media users. Three supervised learning models were tested using a nested 5 × 5 cross-validation strategy, with Random Forest yielding the strongest performance (accuracy = 84.2%, AUC = 0.88). Model calibration analysis using reliab

A hybrid LLM and machine learning framework for early fire detection in subway tunnels.

Fire detection is vital in subway tunnels where confined geometries and ventilation complicate safety monitoring. Existing approaches, including classical machine learning methods, typically detect fire from multivariate correlations but often lack the contextual reasoning required for disambiguation. This limitation becomes critical when HVAC-driven airflow disrupts thermal stratification and dilutes gas concentrations, creating ambiguous patterns that mimic fire signatures. Recent studies suggest that Large Language Models (LLMs) may help address this challenge by translating structured sens

High-Frequency Physiological Measures Predict Post-Admission Surgical Intervention After Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

After a traumatic brain injury, around 12% of patients require surgical interventions during their index hospitalization due to delayed or progressive intracranial hemorrhage or complications such as elevated intracranial pressure (ICP)1. Compiling data from four harmonized studies with 288 patients that have high-frequency physiological measurements, including ICP, we aimed to determine factors associated with those surgeries and whether longitudinal physiological measurements could be used to predict the need for craniectomy or craniotomy at least 1 h before the surgery occurred. The outcome

Parkinson's Disease Diagnosis Using Laplacian Score, Gaussian Process Regression and Self-Organizing Maps.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex degenerative brain disease that affects nerve cells in the brain responsible for body movement. Machine learning is widely used to track the progression of PD in its early stages by predicting unified Parkinson's disease rating scale (UPDRS) scores. In this paper, we aim to develop a new method for PD diagnosis with the aid of supervised and unsupervised learning techniques. Our method is developed using the Laplacian score, Gaussian process regression (GPR) and self-organizing maps (SOM). SOM is used to segment the data to handle large PD datasets. The mo

Feature discretization-based deep clustering for thyroid ultrasound image feature extraction.

Ultrasound imaging technology has the advantage of being convenient, less harmful and widely applied, making ultrasonography one of the most popular methods for disease diagnosis. With the rapid development of Computer- Aided Diagnosis (CAD) technology, the use of neural networks to analyze ultrasound images has become a popular method to improve the diagnostic efficiency of ultrasonography. Since the high cost of labeling medical images makes it difficult to train neural networks based on supervised learning, unsupervised CAD techniques without labeling have become a research trend.
