Contribution of the glossopharyngeal nerve in imidapril-mediated enhancement of the swallowing reflex in rats.

Imidapril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, enhances the swallowing reflex and reduces the incidence of aspiration pneumonia. The aim was to identify the primary afferent fibers involved in imidapril-mediated enhancement of the swallowing reflex in an arterially perfused rat model. Enhancement of swallowing burst amplitude was abolished following bilateral glossopharyngeal nerve transection, whereas enhancement persisted after bilateral superior laryngeal nerve transection. These findings suggest that the glossopharyngeal nerve is essential for imidapril-enhanced swallowing. The res

Swallowing Dysfunction and Histopathological Changes in a Rat Model of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is associated with progressive dysphagia. Although histopathological changes in the masseter and tongue muscles have been reported in DMD rats, little is known regarding swallowing-related muscles, especially those involved in the pharyngeal phase. Therefore, this study evaluated the swallowing function and pathology of swallowing-related muscles in a DMD rat model. Seven male DMD rats and five wild-type (WT) rats were used. Their body weight and food intake amount were monitored weekly. Electromyography (EMG) was performed on the geniohyoid muscle to assess t

Pathology of Lankesterella sp. infection in a cliff swallow from California, USA.

Lankesterella spp., apicomplexan coccidian protozoa historically associated with amphibians, are increasingly reported in birds. Here, we describe lesions associated with infection from, and depict phylogenetic relationships of, a Lankesterella sp. in a cliff swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) from California, USA. An 8-wk-old male, hand-raised, cliff swallow housed in an outdoor aviary had progressive nonspecific clinical signs for 12 d. The bird was euthanized because of poor prognosis. Histologically, histiocytic, lymphocytic, and plasmacytic myocarditis and necrotizing pectoral myositis we

The dynamic shape changes of the tongue base during respiration, chewing and swallowing.

This study aimed to analyze dimensional deformations of the tongue base during respiration, chewing, and swallowing. Eight 7-8-month-old Yucatan minipigs were used. Under deep sedation, eight 2mm ultrasonic piezoelectric (SONO) crystals were implanted in the tongue base forming a cubic-shaped configuration, representing right/left dorsal and ventral lengths, anterior/posterior dorsal and ventral widths, and right/left anterior and posterior thicknesses. Next, 8 pairs of electromyographic (EMG) microelectrodes were inserted into the tongue, jaw, hyoid, pharyngeal, and palatal muscles. SONO and

Examining the Use of Pill Swallowing in Dysphagia Assessment: A Survey of Common Practices.

Pill swallowing and medication administration can be problematic in patients with difficulty swallowing and can lead to poor medication compliance. The extent to which speech-language pathologists (SLPs) consider pill swallowing during videofluorographic assessments, however, is not known. A survey focusing on SLP practices, knowledge, and opinions about assessment of pill swallowing and subsequent medication administration decisions in patients with dysphagia was distributed to SLPs via American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) special interest divisions and an online forum. Results

Experimental and Computational Analysis of Bolus Fragmentation during Model Oropharyngeal Swallowing.

Fragmentation of the liquid bolus during swallowing may enhance the risk of airway exposure to the passing bolus and thereby increase vulnerability for aspiration. Our goal was to develop an experimental and a computational model that depicts how physical forces applied to a model bolus affect cohesion during simulated swallowing. A physical replica of the oral cavity was created through 3D printing to emulate the bolus-accommodating tongue within the oral cavity. The intent was to assess the effect of linear force applied to the bolus, similar to that of the deforming tongue during bolus prop

Hidden Undernourishment: Sex and Disease Factors Associated with the Underrating of Swallowing Function.

Accurate assessment of swallowing function is essential to prevent aspiration pneumonia and nutritional decline. However, in hospitalized patients, discrepancies are often observed between clinical assessments and the actual oral intake. We retrospectively analyzed 5,091 patients who underwent a videofluoroscopic swallowing study or videoendoscopic evaluation of swallowing (VE) at our hospital between 2018 and 2024. The Discrepancy Index (DI), as the difference between the Food Intake LEVEL Scale and Fujishima's swallowing ability grade, was calculated. Patients with DI ≤ - 2 were classified a

An intelligent quantitative analysis software for videofluoroscopic swallowing study in patients with dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) employs quantitative analysis methods, which are valued in dysphagia diagnosis for their objectivity and precision. Nonetheless, conventional methods are laborious and time-consuming. Despite advancements in automatic tracking methods, existing software still requires substantial manual intervention and offers a restricted set of quantitative metrics. This study aimed to develop an intelligent VFSS quantitative analysis tool that assists clinicians in dysphagia diagnosis by enabling automated tracking and providing a comprehensive set of th

Effects of rTMS on swallowing function and neuroimaging features in post-stroke dysphagia.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, is common after stroke and can lead to complications like malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia, and increased mortality. Recovery is driven by neural reorganization, yet traditional interventions focus on managing swallowing difficulties rather than restoring brain function. Neuromodulatory approaches like repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) show potential for promoting brain plasticity and recovery. While rTMS has demonstrated efficacy in improving swallowing after stroke, few studies have explored its neural mechanisms at the b

Super-Supraglottic Swallow Combined with Head Flexion Strengthens Laryngeal Closure.

The super-supraglottic swallow (SSGS) improves laryngeal closure, and head flexion compensates for inadequate closure of the airway. These two procedures are typically utilized by speech-language pathologists for specific patient populations. This study compared the effect of the SSGS with head flexion (i.e., modified SSGS [mSSGS]) on laryngeal closure with that of usual swallowing and the SSGS in healthy individuals. Twenty-one healthy volunteers were instructed to swallow 4 ml of thin liquid barium in a sitting position during usual swallowing, SSGS, and mSSGS under X-ray fluoroscopy. The pr

Validation of a Mouse Model of Dysfunctional Oropharyngeal Swallowing-Induced Aspiration Pneumonia.

OBJECTIVES: To validate a mouse nerve injury model of microaspiration pneumonia due to dysfunctional oropharyngeal swallowing. METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were divided into nerve transection (Nx; in which the left hypoglossal and vagus nerves were transected) and nonsurgical control groups. The lungs were removed the day after nerve transection. Then, the expression of inflammation-related genes (TNFα, CCL2, and IL-6) in the lung tissue was measured via qPCR and lung tissues were evaluated histologically via HE staining (Ctl = 6, Nx = 4). Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was collected at these
