Enhanced dense core granule function and adrenal hypersecretion in a mouse model of Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a progressive developmental disorder resulting from loss-of-function mutations in the gene encoding methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2), a transcription regulatory protein. The RTT phenotype is complex and includes severe cardiorespiratory abnormalities, dysautonomia and behavioral symptoms of elevated stress. These findings have been attributed to an apparent hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system due to defects in brainstem development; however, the possibility that the peripheral sympathoadrenal axis itself is abnormal has not been explored. The present stud…

The autonomic nervous system in functional bowel disorders.

Communications along the brain-gut axis involve neural pathways as well as immune and endocrine mechanisms. The two branches of the autonomic nervous system are integrated anatomically and functionally with visceral sensory pathways, and are responsible for the homeostatic regulation of gut function. The autonomic nervous system is also a major mediator of the visceral response to central influences such as psychological stress. As defined, functional disorders comprise a constellation of symptoms, some of which suggest the presence of altered perception, while other symptoms point to disorder

Mechanisms Responsible for Genetic Hypertension in Schlager BPH/2 Mice.

It has been 45 years since Gunther Schlager used a cross breeding program in mice to develop inbred strains with high, normal, and low blood … 3. Analysis of the adrenal gland using microarray suggested an association with the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. Indeed, in support of this, there is a larger depressor response to ganglion blockade, which reduced blood pressure in BPH/2 mice to the same level as BPN/3 mice. Greater renal tyrosine hydroxylase staining and greater renal noradrenaline levels in …

Neurohormonal perturbations in fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia (FM) falls into the spectrum of what might be termed 'stress-associated syndromes' by virtue of frequent onset after acute or chronic stressors and apparent exacerbation of symptoms during periods of physical or emotional stress. Patients with FM exhibit disturbances of the major stress-response systems, the HPA axis and the sympathetic nervous system. Integrated basal cortisol levels measured by 24-hour urine-free cortisol are low. FM patients display a unique pattern of HPA axis perturbation characterized by exaggerated ACTH response to exogenous CRH or to endogenous activators …

Mood states, sympathetic activity, and in vivo beta-adrenergic receptor function in a normal population.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between mood states and beta-adrenergic receptor function in a normal population. We also examined if sympathetic nervous system activity is related to mood states or beta-adrenergic receptor function. Sixty-two participants aged 25-50 years were enrolled in this study. Mood states were assessed using the Profile of Mood States (POMS). Beta-adrenergic receptor function was determined using the chronotropic 25 dose isoproterenol infusion test. Level of sympathetic nervous system activity was estimated from 24-hr urine norepinephrine excr…

Severe orthostatic hypotension following weight reduction surgery.

Surgical interventions for morbid obesity are common practice in many countries, especially when other treatment options have failed or when rapid weight loss is desired. The association between weight and blood pressure is well established, especially the paradigm of obesity-related hypertension. We describe a 45-year-old obese woman with a medical history of hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus who lost 57 kg within a few months after a weight reduction surgery. She suffered from severe orthostatic hypotension, which probably resulted from sympathetic nervous system dysfunction. Our pat…

[Physical performance and sleep in athletes].

To estimate the activity of the sympathetic nervous system excretion of noradrenaline (NA) and adrenaline (A) of members of national teams (8 different olympic disciplines) has been looked at. Measured by GC/MS the catecholamines showed some characteristics that can be expressed by the NA/A-ratio which is independent of sports-discipline, gender and age (17 to 35 years): morning-urine, representing sleeping-time, expressed good recreation with NA/A > 10 and nervousness followed by low performance with NA/A < 8. Athletes longing for good performance may be stressed by time-shift, high-altitude …

Effects of midazolam on heart rate variability during surgery under spinal anaesthesia.

Effects of midazolam on the cardiac autonomic nervous system were studied by power spectral analysis of electrocardiographic R-R intervals in patients undergoing elective lower abdominal surgery under spinal anaesthesia. Patients were randomly assigned into two groups: 10 patients in group A received spinal anaesthesia only and 10 in group S received spinal anaesthesia and midazolam of 0.05 mg/kg when surgery started. In the frequency domain power spectra, low (Lo; 0.04-0.15 Hz) and high (Hi; 0.15-0.40 Hz) frequency components were integrated to ascertain sympathetic and parasympathetic activi

Repeated activation of C1 neurons in medulla oblongata decreases anti-inflammatory effect via the hypofunction of the adrenal gland adrenergic response.

The immune system is known to be controlled by the autonomic nervous system including sympathetic and parasympathetic (vagus) nerves. C1 neurons in the medulla oblongata, which participate in the control of the autonomic nervous system, are responders to stressors and regulate the immune system. Short-term activation of C1 neurons suppresses inflammation, while the effect of a long-term activation of these neurons on the inflammatory reflex is unclear. We, herein, demonstrate that the coactivation of both the splenic sympathetic nerves and the adrenal gland adrenergic response are indispensabl

Role of olfactory receptor78 in carotid body-dependent sympathetic activation and hypertension in murine models of chronic intermittent hypoxia.

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) is a hallmark manifestation of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a widespread breathing disorder. CIH-treated rodents exhibit activation of the sympathetic nervous system and hypertension. Heightened carotid body (CB) activity has been implicated in CIH-induced hypertension. CB expresses high abundance of olfactory receptor (Olfr) 78, a G-protein coupled receptor. Olfr 78 null mice exhibit impaired CB sensory nerve response to acute hypoxia. Present study examined whether Olfr78 participates in CB-dependent activation of the sympathetic nervous system and hypert…

Disorder of autonomic nervous system and its vulnerability to external stimulation in functional dyspepsia.

To elucidate the role of autonomic nervous system in functional dyspepsia patients, we examined 24-h heart rate variability: the basal levels, responses after lunch, cold pressor and mental arithmetic tests, and the efficacy of an autonomic drug (tofisopam). The high-frequency component (HF: 0.15-0.40 Hz) and the ratio of HF to the low-frequency component (LF: 0.04-0.15 Hz; LF/HF ratio) were used as indicators of parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic nervous system function. The HF component in the 24-h, daytime, and nighttime was low in 86.7%, 97.8%, and 66.7% of patients (n = 45) and the

Central nervous system involvement in the autonomic responses to psychological distress.

Psychological distress can trigger acute coronary syndromes and sudden cardiac death in vulnerable patients. The primary pathophysiological mechanism that plays a role in stress-induced cardiac events involves the autonomic nervous system, particularly disproportional sympathetic activation and parasympathetic withdrawal. This article describes the relation between psychological distress and autonomic nervous system function, with a focus on subsequent adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The role of the central nervous system in these associations is addressed, and a systematic review is presente

Essential hypertension is a heterogenous disease made up of several still unspecified subgroups. According to the dual theory of hypertensio … he organism seems to be psychologically immobilized. In the beginning of stress exposure, increased sympathetic nervous system activity is seen as an adaptive response, thereby enabling the individual to cope, but if the attempts to cope meet with constant failure, the stress becomes unbearable. Somatic versus sympathetic mediated chronic limb pain. Experience and treatment options.

It has been helpful in our practice to separate somatic from sympathetic-mediated peripheral nerve pain. We would recommend application of the new nomenclature of type I complex regional pain (sympathetic dystrophy) and type II complex regional pain (causalgia) (see Table 1). We believe it is essential that both of these conditions be separated into their early and late phases and that the treatment alternatives be customized for the individual patient and the peripheral nerve involved. If a cast, pin, or external fixation apparatus is associated with peripheral nerve pain, the offending appar

Osteophytes of the spine compressing the sympathetic trunk and splanchnic nerves in the thorax.

The presence of osteophytes compressing the sympathetic structures in the thorax was found in 655 (65.5%) of 1,000 cadavers. In 60.4% of the affected cases, the compression was on the right side, and in 36.9% it was bilateral, although the right side was more severely affected. In 2%, the compression was on the left only. The highest frequency of compression was at the T8-10 level, the right greater splanchnic nerve being the structure most frequently involved. The sympathetic trunk itself (ganglia and cord) was affected only by osteophytes of vertebrae at the lowest thoracic levels; however,

[Structure and homodynamia of the intersegmental connection TI-TII].

The reason to consider the second thoracic cerebrospinal nerve (Th2) as one of the sources of the brachial plexus is the fact of the intersegmentary connection between Th1 and Th2 by means of a neural branch situating on the internal surface of the thorax near the vertebral column (the intrathoracic or paravertebral branch). However, not all cases of the intersegmentary connection Th1-Th2 should be regarded only as participation of Th2 in the formation of the brachial plexus, this is conditioned by certain peculiarities of its structure and by the character of interconnections with the I inter
