Facial Emotion Recognition and Executive Functions in Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: The ability to accurately identify facial expressions of emotions is crucial in human interaction. Although a previous study suggested deficient emotional face recognition in patients with fibromyalgia, not much is known about the origin of this impairment. Against this background, the present study investigated the role of executive functions. Executive functions refer to cognitive control mechanisms enabling implementation and coordination of basic mental operations. Deficits in this domain are prevalent in fibromyalgia. METHODS: Fifty-two fibromyalgia patients and thirty-two hea

Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Neural Networks in Young and Older Adults.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may be a viable tool to improve motor and cognitive function in advanced age. However, although a number of studies have demonstrated improved cognitive performance in older adults, other studies have failed to show restorative effects. The neural effects of beneficial stimulation response in both age groups is lacking. In the current study, tDCS was administered during simultaneous fMRI in 42 healthy young and older participants. Semantic word generation and motor speech baseline tasks were used to investigate behavioral and neural effects of uni

A schizophrenia relevant 5-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task for mice assessing broad monitoring, distractibility and impulsivity.

The 5-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task (5-CSRTT) is an automated test for rodents allowing the assessment of multiple cognitive measures. Originally designed to assess cognitive deficits relevant to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it has been widely used in the investigation of neural systems of attention. In the current study, we have set up a modified version, which reduced the training phase to only 8-9 days with minimal food deprivation and without single-housing. Furthermore, based on evidence that patients with schizophrenia are more impaired in broad monitoring abilities than

Training-induced changes in inhibitory control network activity.

Despite extensive research on inhibitory control (IC) and its neural systems, the questions of whether IC can be improved with training and how the associated neural systems change are understudied. Behavioral evidence suggests that performance on IC tasks improves with training but that these gains do not transfer to other tasks, and almost nothing is known about how activation in IC-related brain regions changes with training. Human participants were randomly assigned to receive IC training (N = 30) on an adaptive version of the stop-signal task (SST) or an active sham-training (N = 30) duri

Breath-hold task induces temporal heterogeneity in electroencephalographic regional field power in healthy subjects.

We demonstrated that changes in CO2 values cause oscillations in the cortical activity in δ-and α-bands. The analysis of the regional field power (RFP) showed evidence that different cortical areas respond with different time delays to CO2 challenges. An opposite behavior was found for the end-tidal O2. We suppose that the different cortical time delays likely expresse specific ascending pathways to the cortex, generated by chemoreceptor nuclei in the brain stem. Although the brain stem is in charge of the automatic control of ventilation, the cortex is involved in the voluntary control of bre

Visual overselectivity: a comparison of two instructional remediation procedures with autistic children.

The present study compared two classroom-relevant procedures for remediating visual overselectivity in autistic children. One approach was based on perceptual-motor theory in which possible relationships between functional object-use and overselectivity were studied. The second strategy, equivalence training, used a four-step stimulus shift procedure. A comparison group of autistic children was exposed to simple repeated practice trials with the test tasks. Results showed that equivalence training was more effective than functional object-use in improving posttest scores, with repeated practic

How Cognitive Load Affects Dynamic Trust Calibration in Human-AI Collaboration: Evidence for Selective Pathway Effects.

ObjectiveThis study examined whether cognitive load produces selective effects on different trust updating pathways in AI-assisted decision making.BackgroundAlthough cognitive load affects trust in automation, its influence on the mechanisms of trial-by-trial trust updating remains unclear.MethodsA dual-task paradigm embedded in a mining exploration task manipulated cognitive load while capturing dynamic trust calibration. Guided by a dual-pathway framework, we operationalized process-based (analytical evaluation of AI recommendation correctness) and outcome-based (heuristic reliance on task o

Uncovering the role of sociodemographic factors in sex/gender differences in emotional brain activation: an SDM-PSI meta-analysis of fMRI studies.

INTRODUCTION: The study of sex/gender (S/G) differences in neuroscience, particularly in emotional processing, has been hindered by methodological inconsistencies, often producing biased conclusions that overgeneralize brain differences between males and females. Moreover, many studies fail to consider how other sociodemographic factors interact with S/G to influence the brain. This study aims to address these gaps by investigating whether potential S/G effects in brain activation during emotion-evoking functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) tasks are influenced by those factors. METHOD

Behavioral and pharmacological validation of the differential reinforcement of low-rate behavior paradigm in non-human primates.

Depression remains a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet the predictive validity of many preclinical behavioral assays for antidepressant efficacy remains limited. The differential reinforcement of low-rate behavior (DRL) task has classically been used in rodents to identify antidepressant-like effects, but its utility in non-human primates (NHPs) has not been established. Here, we adapted the DRL task for use in adult male cynomolgus macaques ( Macaca fascicularis ) and evaluated its pharmacological sensitivity and translational relevance across 19 compounds spanning multiple drug clas

Understanding never events: developing an ecologically valid behavioral test for left-right confusion during surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The accurate distinction between left and right is a critical cognitive function. A failure to correctly distinguish left and right during surgery can lead to a so-called Never Event, a preventable medical error that leads to death or severe injury of the patient. Unfortunately, such wrong-site surgeries still happen every year. Thus, understanding left-right confusion during surgery is critical for patient safety. However, current Left-Right Confusion (LRC) tests have low ecological validity for the complex, time-critical demands of a surgical environment. This study introduces

Prefrontal Cortex Activity and Gait in Parkinson's Disease With Cholinergic and Dopaminergic Therapy.

Degradation of striatal dopamine in Parkinson's disease (PD) may initially be supplemented by increased cognitive control mediated by cholinergic mechanisms. Shift to cognitive control of walking can be quantified by prefrontal cortex activation. Levodopa improves certain aspects of gait and worsens others, and cholinergic augmentation influence on gait and prefrontal cortex activity remains unclear. This study examined dopaminergic and cholinergic influence on gait and prefrontal cortex activity while walking in PD. A single-site, randomized, double-blind crossover trial examined effects of l

A grounded theory study in blended learning of the facilitation of role transition from compliant learners to collaborative partners regarding non-verbal behavior.

BACKGROUND: In blended learning environments, college students often remain silent in face-to-face classrooms yet actively engage in online collaborative settings. This gap reflects a shift in learner identity from "compliant learners" to "collaborative partners." However, little is known about how non-verbal behaviors drive this identity transition. METHODS: This study employed a grounded theory approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 12 college students, supplemented by WeChat chat logs and collaborative document revision histories, and analyzed using three-level codi

Activity based restorative therapy considerations for children: medical and therapeutic perspectives for the pediatric population.

Well-established scientific evidence demonstrates that activity is essential for the development and repair of the central nervous system, yet traditional rehabilitation approaches target muscles only above the lesion as a means of compensation. Activity-Based Rehabilitation (ABR) represents an evolving paradigm shift in neurorehabilitation targeting activation of the neuromuscular system below the lesion. Based on activity-dependent plasticity, ABR offers high intensity activation of the nervous system to optimize the capacity for recovery, while working to offset the chronic complications th

Age affects the contribution of ipsilateral brain regions to movement kinematics.

Healthy aging is accompanied by changes in brain activation patterns in the motor system. In older subjects, unilateral hand movements typically rely on increased recruitment of ipsilateral frontoparietal areas. While the two central concepts of aging-related brain activity changes, "Hemispheric Asymmetry Reduction in Older Adults" (HAROLD), and "Posterior to Anterior Shift in Aging" (PASA), have initially been suggested in the context of cognitive tasks and were attributed to compensation, current knowledge regarding the functional significance of increased motor system activity remains scarc

An Intrinsic Role of Beta Oscillations in Memory for Time Estimation.

The neural mechanisms underlying time perception are of vital importance to a comprehensive understanding of behavior and cognition. Recent work has suggested a supramodal role for beta oscillations in measuring temporal intervals. However, the precise function of beta oscillations and whether their manipulation alters timing has yet to be determined. To accomplish this, we first re-analyzed two, separate EEG datasets and demonstrate that beta oscillations are associated with the retention and comparison of a memory standard for duration. We next conducted a study of 20 human participants usin

National Task Force on Mental Health and Well-being of Medical students: A critique.

The National Task Force (NTF) report on Mental Health and Well-being of medical students presented a comprehensive document based on a nationwide survey and after multiple stakeholder consultations. The findings indicate that a substantial proportion of medical students experience moderate to high levels of stress in medical schools and suggests measures to overcome it. In this critique, we highlight several ground realities-such as institutional inertia, limited staffing, inadequate gatekeeper training, and poor follow-through-that may limit the impact of these recommendations. The Epistemological Threshold: From Corps-Objet to Nursing Theory in the Clinical Maturation of Educators.

This phenomenological study investigates the epistemological maturation of 11 early-career nursing faculty. In-depth interviews identified a critical experiential threshold in clinical practice. Initially, novices often remain phenomenologically confined to mechanical task execution, inadvertently objectifying patients (corps-objet). However, surpassing a 3-year clinical threshold facilitates a profound ontological shift: educators reclaim practical intention and perceive patients as lived subjects (corps-propre). This embodied clinical wisdom is a prerequisite for translating abstract nursing

The shift from biological to social fatherhood--counselling men and their partners considering donor insemination.

Men and women are likely to suffer from infertility in similar ways, but gender differences account for different ways in revealing--and not revealing--this emotional pain. The following article is based on this understanding. It seeks to describe counselling tasks and interventions that support men and their partners considering donor insemination. This pre-treatment counselling comprises a range of issues, including the provision of medical and legal information, supporting the grieving process, managing the taboo and stigma surrounding donor insemination, supporting disclosure, and last but

Motivational climate in school sport and adolescent mental health: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Motivational climate in school-based physical education and sport represents a potentially modifiable context for adolescent mental health; however, its associations with psychological outcomes have not been systematically synthesised. This review aimed to synthesise evidence on perceived motivational climate and adolescent mental health outcomes in school settings. METHODS: Databases were searched from the inception to May 2026 following PRISMA guidelines. Inclusion criteria for studies included sampling of adolescents (10-19 years of age), assessment of motivational climate in s

Habit learning shapes activity dynamics in the central nucleus of the amygdala.

A habit develops as a motivated behavior that is strengthened by extended experience and feedback. While the performance component of a habit is relatively well studied, being linked to action-related neural dynamics in the basal ganglia and beyond, neural mechanisms for outcome feedback during habit formation, the reinforcement component, remain unknown. One candidate for this feedback mechanism is in the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA). Here, we identify CeA neural firing dynamics in male and female rats that serve to promote habit formation. We used a novel maze task with rewards of d
