BACKGROUND: To introduce and evaluate an updated surgical technique for the treatment of tendinous mallet finger deformity.
METHODS: From April 2017 to September 2018, 13 cases of tendinous mallet finger deformity were treated. All patients had zone I extensor tendon rupture, with no residual tendon at the insertion for suture, and no avulsion fracture in the distal phalanx. Extensor tendon insertion reconstruction was realized by suturing the transferred portion of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon with the proximal end of the extensor tendon via a constructed bone tunnel. The treatment

The authors analyse their clinical experience of treating 5 patients with immobilization of the hand and propose to use complex and composite vascularized grafts for the plasty of extensive defects of tendons and skin of the forearm. They consider microvascular grafting of skin flaps from the back of the foot with tendons from the extensors of the toes with their own paratenon to be an excellent material for the reconstruction of the tendons of the flexors. They advise to use the vascularized broad fascia of the hip incorporated into the lateral flap from the hip for the plasty of extensive de

The authors describe a technique of controlled postoperative mobilization of extensor apparatus. They make use of Levame splint in all injuries of extensor-tendons of the last four fingers except for "mallet finger" and "buttonhole". This technique is issued of the so called Kleinert primary suture technic for flexor-tendons and its effectiveness was controlled by electromyography. The Levame splint is used for thirty days and the active flexion is immediately authorized. From 1976 to 1981, 80 cases were treated with this technique and no rupture had happened, and the good results amount to 86

BACKGROUND: We reviewed the individual participant data of patients who sustained isolated common peroneal nerve (CPN) injuries resulting in foot drop. Functional results were compared between eight interventions for CPN palsies to determine step-wise treatment approaches for the underlying mechanisms of nerve injury.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, and CINAHL databases were searched. PRISMA-IPD and Cochrane guidelines were followed in the data search. Eligible patients sustained isolated CPN injuries resulting in their foot drop. Patients were stratified by

Numerous surgical procedures have been described and used in the treatment of recurrent dislocation of the peroneal tendons. One case treated successfully by reconstructing the superior peroneal retinaculum using the plantaris tendon is described here. The advantages and disadvantages in previously used procedures, as well as long-term results, are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: The healing of tendon-bone injuries is very difficult, often resulting in poor biomechanical performance and unsatisfactory functional recovery. The tendon-bone insertion has a complex four distinct layers structure, and previous studies have often focused on promoting the regeneration of the fibrocartilage layer, neglecting the role of its bone end repair in tendon-bone healing. This study focuses on the role of treadmill training in promoting bone regeneration at the tendon-bone insertion and its related mechanisms.
METHODS: After establishing the tendon-bone insertion injury

The vascularity of the quadriceps tendon influences the risk of tendon rupture. Quadriceps and patellar tendon ruptures are rare but serious injuries, with an incidence of 1.37/100000 and 0.68/100000, respectively. Risk factors include age, degeneration, and systemic diseases such as kidney disease and rheumatoid arthritis. While quadriceps tendon ruptures predominantly affect people over 50, patellar tendon ruptures are more common in younger, physically active people, often with pre-existing tendon pathologies. The most common mechanism of rupture of the quadriceps tendon is indirect trauma,

PURPOSE: Hamate hook fractures are uncommon injuries for which treatment is controversial. Excision of the hamate hook is considered to be the preferred method of treatment but the effects of hamate excision are not clearly delineated. The purpose of this study was to determine what effect, if any, excision of the hamate has on flexor tendon function.
METHOD: The biomechanical effects of hamate hook excision on flexor tendon function were studied in fresh cadaveric forearm specimens with wrists fixed in 3 positions (neutral, 30 degrees extension, 30 degrees extension with 30 degrees ulnar dev

This article discusses the effectiveness of MR imaging in evaluating the injuries of both upper and lower extremities in the professional football player. Topics include bone, joint and soft tissue disorders, and injuries resulting from overuse or trauma of the shoulder, elbow, forearm, and wrist; the pelvis and hip, lower extremity muscle and tendon, knee, and ankle.

BACKGROUND: Flexor hallucis longus (FHL) transfer is a well-established method for treating chronic Achilles tendon ruptures and tendinopathy. Harvesting of the FHL tendon in zone 2 results in greater length but is also associated with an increased risk of injury to the medial plantar nerve and requires an additional plantar incision. Because of the anatomic proximity of the FHL tendon to the tibial neurovascular bundle in zone 2, the purpose of this study was to investigate the risk of vascular or nerve injury with arthroscopic assisted percutaneous tenotomy in zone 2 of the FHL tendon.

Extensor tendons in the dorsal hand especially at or close to the metacarpophalangeal joint area and those of the thumb are solid and round in cross-sections. A survey shows that most surgeons are using less strong surgical repair methods, often with over-protection after surgery. In this article, strong surgical repairs (6-strand repairs) are recommended for these areas based on author's experience. These tendons are treated with surgical methods and principles of current flexor tendon surgery. The finger is protected with short splinting with early active motion or hand use. After the extens

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical results of modified peroneal sulcus deepening combined with superior peroneal retinaculum repair in peroneal tendon subluxation treatment.
METHODS: From 2016 to 2020, 18 patients with peroneal tendon subluxation were diagnosed and treated; all patients underwent modified peroneal sulcus deepening combined with superior peroneal retinaculum repair. The visual analogue scale (VAS) score, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society ankle-hindfoot (AOFAS-AH) score, and subjective patient satisfaction were evaluated before surgery and during follow-up.

The peroneal tendons play a critical role in stabilizing the foot and ankle especially in athletes with high demands on lateral ankle strength. A complete understanding of the anatomy of the lateral ankle as well as a careful physical examination is imperative to diagnosing peroneal pathology, which is commonly misdiagnosed and can lead to chronic pain and inability to perform high level sport. Although low-demand patients do well with a conservative approach, most high-demand athletes will benefit from surgical intervention.

Peroneal subluxation is a rare but debilitating pathology that can be the result of a superior peroneal retinaculum tear or intrasheath laxity. On clinical examination of both cases, the pathology is observed when the ankle is circumducted in eversion and dorsiflexion. With a superior peroneal retinaculum tear, the tendons dislocate from the peroneal groove, whereas with intrasheath laxity the tendons remain in the groove. In the present case series, peroneal stabilization was performed for both superior peroneal retinaculum tear and intrasheath laxity. With our technique, the fibro-osseous co

Peroneal tendon pathologies are rare but often underdiagnosed. There may be an association with chronic lateral ankle instability as well as with varus hindfoot alignment. Pathologies of the tendons fall into three categories: tendinitis and tenosynovitis, tendon ruptures and tears, and tendon subluxation and dislocation. Magnetic resonance imaging is the standard method for radiological assessment; however, the diagnosis and treatment are based primarily on patient history and clinical examination. A primary conservative treatment can be attempted, except for peroneal tendon dislocations in p

It is suggested that rupture of a previously normal tendon of extensor pollicis longus after Colles fracture may be due in some cases to crushing of the tendon between the styloid process of the third metacarpal and the dorsal tubercle of the radius, when the wrist is forced into extreme extension.
