Some reproductive parameters of adult stages of Amblyomma cajennense ticks were studied. The capacity of virgin females to reproduce by parthenogenesis was evaluated, during an experimental infestation, in absence of males, on a horse (Equus cabalus). Ticks were spread either completely free or in limited sites on the body of the animal. The engorged virgin females showed longer feeding periods and lighter body weights than those that had been fertilized. Some of these unmated females produced smaller egg masses, which had no embryonary development. On the other hand, females that had been ins

Bovine theileriosis is a vector-borne disease poised to become one of the most economically significant diseases of cattle in the United States. The hemoparasite Theileria orientalis Ikeda genotype causes bovine theileriosis (Piroplasmida: Theileriidae), which is primarily transmitted by Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann (Acari: Ixodidae) (longhorned tick, Asian longhorned tick). Since its initial detection in New Jersey in 2017, H. longicornis has rapidly spread to 24 states and Washington, DC, as of July 2025. Given the exotic and invasive nature of this vector and its unique biological char

During the 1990s, Milan Labuda's experimental results established a new paradigm for the study of tick-borne viruses that has since been strengthened by its demonstrated effectiveness in explaining the epidemiology of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). This brief review summarizes the essential features of the transmission of tick-borne pathogens such as TBE virus. Leukocytes migrate between tick feeding sites, bearing infective virions and providing a transport route for the virus between co-feeding ticks independent of a systemic viraemia. Such tick-borne pathogens are thus transmitted from tick

Ticks are haematophagous ectoparasites and vectors of a diverse range of pathogens, exerting substantial impacts on wildlife, domestic animals and public health. In Australia, despite the country's rich and unique biodiversity, a comprehensive understanding of ticks and tick-borne pathogens associated with wildlife remains limited. Environmental change, urban expansion and climate variability are increasingly disrupting wildlife habitats, potentially intensifying interactions between wildlife hosts, ticks and humans. A broad evidence synthesis of studies published between January 1940 and Marc

BACKGROUND: The 1986 disaster at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant released massive amounts of radioactive material into the local environment. In addition to radiation, remediation efforts and abandonment of military-industrial complexes contributed to contamination with heavy metals, organics, pesticides and other toxic chemicals. Numerous studies have evaluated the effects of this contamination on the local ecology. However, few studies have reported the effect of this contamination on vector-borne pathogens and their hosts. In this manuscript, we characterize tick-borne pathogen presence a

PURPOSE: Ticks are dangerous ectoparasites for humans and other animals, and tick-borne pathogens of Bactrian camels have been epidemiologically surveyed in Gansu Province, China. We aimed to determine the current distribution of tick-borne pathogens among Bactrian camels in Gansu during August 2013 using molecular tools.
METHODS: All ticks underwent morphological identification. We extracted DNA from the blood samples and ticks, screened them for Theileria, Babesia, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia using standard or nested PCR with specific primers.
RESULTS: All ticks collected from the skin were i

The involvement of porcupines, Erethizon dorsatum (L.), in the ecology of Colorado tick fever (CTF) virus in Rocky Mountain National Park was investigated from 1975 to 1977. Porcupine dens and feeding activity were found mostly on rocky knolls or on south-facing slopes within open stands of the montane coniferous forest, and 20 adult porcupines were trapped or captured by hand at those locations. An average of 24.6 +/- 5.4 adult Dermacentor andersoni Stiles ticks were found per animal (annual range, 17.5-31.4 ticks). The minimum CTF virus infection rate of the ticks removed from porcupines var

The excessive use of acaricides in the management of the tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus has favored the development of resistance in the parasites, in addition to causing environmental contamination. In this context, biological control using entomopathogenic nematodes appears as a promising alternative. This study evaluated the efficacy of two isolates, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (HB EN01) and Steinernema rarum (PAM 25), in the in vitro control of R. (B.) microplus. Two experiments were conducted with different concentrations of nematodes. In the first, fifteen engorged females we

Ticks will diminish productivity among farm animals and transmit zoonotic diseases. We conducted a study to identify tick species infesting slaughter bulls from Adama City and to screen them for tick-borne pathogens. In 2016, 291 ticks were collected from 37 bulls in Adama, which were ready for slaughter. Ticks were identified morphologically. Total genomic DNA was extracted from ticks and used to test for Rickettsia spp. with real-time PCR. Species identification was done by phylogenetic analysis using sequencing that targeted the 23S-5S intergenic spacer region and ompA genes. Four tick spec

It is the first time that Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), causing potentially lethal disease of humans, has been reported from the Middle East region and from the tortoise tick Hyalomma aegyptium from a tortoise host, whose epidemiological significance may have remained almost completely overlooked so far. We used RT-PCR to screen for 245 ticks collected from 38 Testudo graeca tortoise individuals. Results of our genetic screening provide unambiguous evidence of occurrence of CCHFV in this region and host, suggesting a potentially important role of H. aegyptium in CCHF epidemio

As a result of the increasing incidence of Lyme disease and other tick-borne pathogens in Wisconsin, we assessed the distribution of adult blacklegged ticks through collections from hunter-killed deer in 2008 and 2009 and compared results with prior surveys beginning in 1981. Volunteers staffed 21 Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources registration stations in 21 counties in the eastern half of Wisconsin in 2008 and 10 stations in seven counties in northwestern Wisconsin in 2009. In total, 786 and 300 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were examined in 2008 and 2009, respectively. A

Study on acaricide property of foam soap containing essential oil of Ageratum houstonianum leaves was tested on Rhipicephalus lunulatus. Four doses of the oil (0.00, 0.02, 0.025 and 0.03 microl/g) with four replications for each dose were used in vitro. Each replication consisted of 10 ticks in a Petri dish with filter paper impregnated uniformly with the foam soap on the bottom. The same four doses in three replications were used in vivo. Each replication was made up of 10 naturally ticks infested goats. Results of this study indicate that foam soap containing essential oil of A. houstonianum

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate three commercially available tick removal tools against medium-tipped nontissue tweezers.
METHODS: We evaluated three commercially available tick removal tools against medium-tipped tweezers. Three inexperienced users randomly removed attached American dog ticks (Dermacentor variabilis Say) and lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum L.) from laboratory rabbits in a university animal facility using all tools during one removal session.
RESULTS: Tick damage occurring from removal and quantity of attachment cement were compared. No tool removed nymphs without damage and al

A South African strain of Babesia canis parasites was isolated and shown to be vector-specific to only one of the two vectors in the region, Haemaphysalis leachi. This tick was found to transmit the parasite in its adult instar. When infected as larvae, the ticks would not transmit in the proceeding nymphal instar. The vector-specific strain was named the 'Thomas strain' after one of the dogs involved in isolating it. A survey revealed a prevalence of > 50% of this strain in four widely separated areas of the country. Rhipicephalus sanguineus, which transmits B. canis vogeli elsewhere, has not

The frequencies with which adult Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman and Corwin feed upon white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), raccoons (Procyon lotor), opossums (Didelphis virginiana), and domestic cats were compared in a wooded site in northeastern United States. By combining estimates of the quantity of ticks feeding on each host species with host densities, we derived the relative contribution made by each kind of host to the feeding of the tick population. To compare engorgement success and reproductive efficacy, we weighed ticks found on these hosts and compared tick weight

About forty different arboviruses have been isolated from ticks associated with marine birds along all the coast of the world. The majority of these viruses belongs to 8 serogroups: Hughes, B, Kemerovo, Quaranfil, Nyamanini, Sakhalin, Unkuniemi and Upolu, while some others are non-grouped arboviruses. Two kinds of specialized ticks chiefly harbour these arboviruses: 1. The ticks of Ornitbodoros capensis complex from tropical, subtropical and temperate zones - 2. The ticks Ixodes uriae (= I. putus) and Ixodes signatus from subpolar, arctic and antarcitc zones and the surrounding temperate areas

BACKGROUND: Fleas and ticks are common and harmful ectoparasites in dogs. They feed on blood, cause irritation, and transmit various pathogens. In Poland, the primary species Ctenocephalides felis (fleas), Ixodes ricinus, and Dermacentor reticulatus (ticks) pose a year-round threat. Veterinary organizations recommend continuous year-round protection against ectoparasites. However, actual owner compliance with this recommendation remains unknown.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed medical records from 2021 to 2023 across 45 veterinary practices in Poland. A total of 44,140 ectoparasiti
