BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age, affecting 4-18% of them. Previous studies also showed that periodontal diseases are associated with different components of the metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study is to determine the association between PCOS and periodontal diseases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 196 women (98 with PCOS and 98 healthy controls) were enrolled. PCOS diagnosis was confirmed by history, clinical signs, physical examination, laboratory parameters, and ultrasound studies. Both cases and con

Dental agenesis is one of the most common congenital craniofacial abnormalities. Dental agenesis can be classified, relative to the number of missing teeth (excluding third molars), as hypodontia (1 to 5 missing teeth), oligodontia (6 or more missing teeth), or anodontia (lack of all teeth). Tooth agenesis may occur either in association with genetic syndromes, based on the presence of other inherited abnormalities, or as a non-syndromic trait, with both familiar and sporadic cases reported. In this study, we enrolled 16 individuals affected by tooth agenesis, prevalently hypodontia, and we ca

An orthodontic examination of an eight-year-old female patient revealed osteosclerosis with displaced tooth germs in the left mandible as an incidental finding. The patient has no known underlying diseases. Extraorally, there is normal skin colour without asymmetry with intact sensitivity and motor function. Intraorally, there is an age-appropriate mixed dentition with a discreetly distended mandible on the left.

A mass involving the maxilla of a cow was determined to be an osteosarcoma. Microscopically, the mass was composed of plump pyriform cells aligned along thin trabeculae of osteoid. Osteosarcoma rarely develops in large animal species, but when it does, it is usually found in the skull and must be differentiated from more common diseases, such as actinomycosis and tooth abscesses.

To retrospectively analyze local and systemic factors that resulted in the short-term tooth loss of teeth that were previously assigned a favorable prognosis in patients who were seen and treated over an observational five-year period. This retrospective study included the records of patients who had a minimum of two dental exams at least twelve months apart over a 5-year period. This study investigated extracted teeth with an initially favorable periodontal prognosis that were then divided into one of four categories based on the reason for extraction: caries, periodontal disease, endodontic

Delayed diagnosis of certain diseases like dental caries frequently leads to intensified problems due to postponed treatment. Untreated cavities can progress and affect a deeper layers of the tooth, which result in discomfort, infection, and ultimately tooth loss. Presently, manual diagnosis of dental decay in radiographic images by dentists in most dental clinics is prone to errors due to factors such as fatigue and information overload, emphasizing the necessity for automated diagnostic tools. This study develops an intelligent computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for accurate and efficient

Accurate classification of periodontal disease through panoramic X-ray images carries immense clinical importance for effective diagnosis and treatment. Recent methodologies attempt to classify periodontal diseases from X-ray images by estimating bone loss within these images, supervised by manual radiographic annotations for segmentation or keypoint detection. However, these annotations often lack consistency with the clinical gold standard of probing measurements, potentially causing measurement inaccuracy and leading to unstable classifications. Additionally, the diagnosis of periodontal di

BACKGROUND: Good teeth play a significant role in keeping a healthy personality and a decent quality of life. Loss of tooth is listed among the top hundred health condition affecting the world population, resulting not only in aesthetic and functional damage but also has negative social impact thus affecting the overall quality of life. It has been estimated to cause 7.6 million disability adjusted life years (DALY). Tooth loss has negative consequences on oral health as it may cause drifting of adjacent teeth or over eruption of opposing teeth, further loss of adjacent tooth and temporomandib

Apical periodontitis is a common clinical disease caused by bacteria; bacterial metabolites can cause an imbalance in bone homeostasis, bone mass reduction, and tooth loss. Bone resorption in apical periodontitis causes a concentration of stress in the tooth and periodontal tissues during occlusion, which aggravates the disease. Emerging evidence indicates that bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP9), also known as growth differentiation factor 2(Gdf2), may play an important role in tooth and dentoalveolar development. Herein, we investigated the role of BMP9 in the development of apical periodont

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disease among the elderly population. It has been posited that the onset and progression of AD are influenced by a combination of various factors. Occlusal support loss due to tooth loss has been reported to be a risk factor triggering cognitive dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between tooth loss and cognitive dysfunction and illustrate the role of pyroptosis in advancing Alzheimer's disease.
METHODS: Male 5-month-old senescence-accelerated mouse strain P8 (SAMP8) mice were divided into two group

The Sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway is essential for embryonic development and tissue regeneration. The dysfunction of SHH pathway is involved in a variety of diseases, including cancer, birth defects, and other diseases. Here we reviewed recent studies on main molecules involved in the SHH signaling pathway, specifically focused on their function in epithelial tissue and appendages development, including epidermis, touch dome, hair, sebaceous gland, mammary gland, tooth, nail, gastric epithelium, and intestinal epithelium. The advance in understanding the SHH signaling pathway will giv

In the past decade, a wide range of fascinating monogenic diseases have been linked to mutations in the LMNA gene, which encodes the A-type nuclear lamins, intermediate filament proteins of the nuclear envelope. These diseases include dilated cardiomyopathy with variable muscular dystrophy, Dunnigan-type familial partial lipodystrophy, a Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2 disease, mandibuloacral dysplasia, and Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome. Several diseases are also caused by mutations in genes encoding B-type lamins and proteins that associate with the nuclear lamina. Studies of these so-calle

Complex periprosthetic cases are considered as challenges by clinicians. Clinical and radiographic parameters should be considered separately to make the right choice between an endodontically or periodontally compromised treated tooth and implant. Therefore, in order to decide whether the tooth is safe or not, data that have to be collected are specific parameters of both the patient and the clinician. In addition, the presence of periodontal, prosthetic, and orthodontic diseases requires patients to be set in multidisciplinary approach. The aim of this case report is to describe how the mult
