Emotional and neuropsychological profiles of children with complex regional pain syndrome type-I in an inpatient rehabilitation setting.

OBJECTIVE: Examine the emotional and neuropsychological profiles of pediatric Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type-I in an inpatient setting. METHODS: Seventeen children and adolescents (all female; ages 9 to 18 y) admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation facility who completed neuropsychological assessments that included emotional functioning questionnaires, projective personality measures, and neuropsychological measures. RESULTS: Consistent evidence for somatization was found. Thirty-eight percent of patients exhibited at-risk/elevated mood symptoms (anxiety or depression) based on self-rep

Measurement invariance of brief forms of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire across convenience versus random samples.

Schizotypy, a multifaceted personality construct that represents liability for schizophrenia, is generally measured with self-report questionnaires that have been developed and validated in samples of undergraduate students. Given that understanding schizotypy in non-clinical samples is essential for furthering our understanding of schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathologies, it is critical to test whether non-clinically identified undergraduate and other convenience samples respond to schizotypy scales in the same way as random samples of the general population. Here, 651 undergraduates, 350 MTu

Prevalence of Mental Health problems in sentenced men in prisons from Andalucía (Spain).

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of different mental health problems in men serving prison sentences in Andalusia. METHODS: Descriptive, cross-sectional study of a random sample of 472 men interned in two prisons located in Andalusia. We collected socio-demographic and general criminal and penitentiary data, and we identified mental health problems with two validated instruments for epidemiological research in mental health: the SCID-I interview to diagnose Axis 1 disorders of the DSM-IV and the self-applied questionnaire IPDE to estimate personality disorders. We analyzed the data (pro

[Affective dependency and psychiatry: a discord].

INTRODUCTION: The term "loving dependence" is increasingly used by professionals of the relation of help and the patients themselves. It joins in the wider spectre of the interpersonal dependency. More and more patients suffering from this disorder are coming for psychiatric consultation. However, this notion remains vague and absent in the vocabulary of the psychiatrists. Globally, this term describes the functioning of certain patients who present a fear of not being loved and a dependency on another person. The fear of not being loved provokes a fear of abandonment or incites development of

The Darwinian concept of stress: benefits of allostasis and costs of allostatic load and the trade-offs in health and disease.

Why do we get the stress-related diseases we do? Why do some people have flare ups of autoimmune disease, whereas others suffer from melancholic depression during a stressful period in their life? In the present review possible explanations will be given by using different levels of analysis. First, we explain in evolutionary terms why different organisms adopt different behavioral strategies to cope with stress. It has become clear that natural selection maintains a balance of different traits preserving genes for high aggression (Hawks) and low aggression (Doves) within a population. The exi

The relationship between childhood adversity and adult personality revealed by network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity is known to influence personality development. Studies suggest that distinct types of childhood adversities have differential effects on personality dimensions. However, different types of adversity often co-occur, and personality dimensions are strongly interconnected. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to use a network approach to analyze the interrelationships between different types of childhood adversity and diverse personality dimensions integratively. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We used previously collected data on 142 alcohol dependent patients and 102

Does adherence to physiotherapy depend on the typologies of patients with back pain and their physiotherapists? A qualitative typology study.

BACKGROUND: Patient adherence to physiotherapy is influenced by a multitude of factors including the characteristics and attitudes of patients and physiotherapists. This study aims to identify typologies of patients with back pain and their physiotherapists and attempts to explain how typologies could influence patient adherence. METHOD: This study was based on a secondary data analysis from focus group interviews to identify barriers and facilitators for adherence. Transcribed interview data were used for a structured content analysis based on deductive and inductive categorization and codin

Suicide attempts and ideation in African-American type 1 diabetic patients.

In order to examine suicidality and its correlates in type 1 diabetics 412 African-American type 1 diabetics and 404 African-American controls underwent a semi-structured interview that asked if they had ever attempted suicide. Patients completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire (HDHQ), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Diabetics and controls were compared for their rate of suicide attempt. Diabetic patients who had or had never attempted suicide were compared on socio-demographic and clinical data. It was found that diabetics were

Improvement of alexithymia in patients treated in mental health services for personality disorders: a longitudinal, observational study.

BACKGROUND: The majority of mental health services include patients with personality disorder (PD) and comorbid conditions. Alexithymia, a psychological construct referring to difficulties in identifying and describing internal mental states, may represent a challenge to the psychotherapeutic treatment of patients with PD. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of alexithymia among patients in specialized PD mental health services, differences according to PD severity and PD type, and the longitudinal course of alexithymia during treatment. METHODS: The study included 1,019 patients t

Cocaine withdrawal symptoms identify "Type B" cocaine-dependent patients.

Recent studies of substance dependence typologies briefly show that multivariate systems originally developed for identifying subtypes of alcoholics, such as Babor's Type A and B system, may also be valid in abusers of other substances, such as cocaine. Type B patients are characterized by an earlier onset of addiction and more severe symptoms of their addiction, psychopathology, and impulsivity. The Type B classification has also been associated with deficits in serotonergic function. We have found that patients who exhibit more severe cocaine withdrawal symptoms, as measured by scores on the

Migraine and tension-type headache in a general population: psychosocial factors.

In a cross-sectional study of headache disorders in a representative general population, the prevalence of migraine and tension-type headache was assessed in relation to various psychosocial factors. The random sample comprised 1000 25-64 year old men and women of whom 740 attended the investigation. The headache disorders were classified on the basis of a clinical interview, a physical and a neurological examination using the operational diagnostic criteria of the International Headache Society. None of the sociodemographic variables: marital status, cohabitation, educational level, occupatio

Assessing alexithymia and type A behavior in coronary heart disease patients: a multimethod approach.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing emphasis on using multiple methods to assess personality constructs in psychosomatic research, previous investigations of relations between alexithymia and type A behavior (TAB) have been limited by the use of single methods of measurement and almost no attempt to assess subcomponents of TAB. The aims of this study were to (1) evaluate levels of agreement between structured interview assessments of alexithymia, TAB, hostility, and time urgency and well-established self-report measures of these constructs, and (2) explore relations between alexithymia and TAB and

[Familial body concepts and illness attributions in primary headache in childhood and adolescence].

Empirical evidence of the important role of the family in primary pediatric headache has grown significantly in the last few years. The connections between the process of dysfunction and family interaction are, however, still partly unclear. From a constructivistic point of view, a suitable approach is to focus on social-cognitive factors. In this study, we tested on the basis of exploratory results gained from family questionnaires (n = 39 families with a child or an adolescent suffering from tension-type headache and/or migraine) whether family body concepts and family headache attributions

Relationships between hostility and physiological coronary heart disease risk factors in young adults: the moderating influence of depressive tendencies.

BACKGROUND: We examined whether the relationships between hostility and physiological coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors differ as a function of depressive tendencies (DT). METHODS: The participants were 672 randomly selected healthy young adults who self-reported their hostility (anger, cynicism, and paranoia) and DT. The physiological CHD risk factors studied were systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, body-mass index, serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and serum triglycerides. RESULTS: We found that hostility was negati

Dimensions of hostility and cardiovascular response to interpersonal stress.

Emerging research suggests that hostility is a multidimensional construct with different dimensions conferring different cardiovascular disease risk. This study examined two dimensions of hostility, expressive and neurotic, and their hemodynamic response patterns upon exposure to interpersonal stress. Fifty-seven male undergraduates were categorized into high and low expressive hostility (HiEH, LoEH) and high and low neurotic hostility (HiNH, LoNH) groups based on their Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory scores. Subjects engaged in a mathematical subtraction task, with half of the subjects harass

Psychosocial factors associated with cardiovascular reactivity in older adults.

This study examined associations of psychosocial factors with cardiovascular reactivity in two groups of men and women--spouse caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease (M age = 69.4 N = 82) and controls (M age = 68.5, N = 78) group-matched for age and gender. Cardiovascular responses to an emotional task (speech sample about one's spouse) yielded higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP, DBP) than a spoken cognitive task, which in turn yielded higher BPs and heart rate (HR) than the baseline rest period. HR was greater in response to the two tasks than in response to the ba

Coronary heart disease risk scales and reactivity in a prevention program assessment: failure to show positive relationships.

This study was designed to evaluate relationships among the Jenkins Activity Survey, the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale, and cardiovascular reactivity measured during a semistructured interview in a hospital setting. Subjects were 201 business persons participating in a cardiovascular risk assessment interview component of a fitness program. Correlation analysis showed little evidence of significant positive relationships between self-report scores and reactivity in the total sample and among subjects with high resting blood pressures. Graphic analysis of total sample bivariate distributions, how

The relationship between temperament and impulsive behaviors in eating disordered subjects.

To date, few studies have examined the personality characteristics and clinical predictors of impulsive behaviors in eating disorders (ED). The aim of this work was to study the prevalence of a wide range of impulsive behaviors in a sample of 554 ED subjects and to examine the predictors of these behaviors. Subjects were diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria as having anorexia nervosa restricting type (ANR; n = 183), anorexia nervosa binge eating/purging type (ANBP; n = 65), bulimia nervosa purging type (BNP; n = 244), and bulimia nervosa nonpurging type (BNNP; n = 62).
