Craniocorpography in the diagnosis and therapeutic indication of endolymphatic hydrops.

The glycerol test helps to establish the differential diagnosis between Ménière's disease and other vertigo disturbances, but the test becomes very long and in its primary form informs us only about the cochlear response to the osmotic changes produced by glycerol in the inner ear, and tells us nothing about the vestibular response. In patients with unilateral endolymphatic hydrops we have performed simultaneously the glycerol test with audiometric and craniocorpographic (CCG) control. The response of the vestibular apparatus to the glycerol becomes evident in 84.5% of cases on average in 30 m

The value of 'Trapezoid Rotation Test' by Contraves computerized rotary chair system.

Trapezoid Rotation Tests using the Contraves computerized rotary chair system were performed in 60 normal subjects and 213 patients with peripheral vestibular disorder. In normal subjects, directional preponderance was not observed. The so-called 'response decline phenomenon' by repeating the tests was not detected and the test results showed good reproducibility. On the other hand, the test results of patients were variable, in close relationship with the state of vertigo, and reflected patient's labyrinthine pathology so accurately that the inspection of the treatment course was possible by

[Klein-Waardenburg syndrome. Report of 3 cases in a family with a review of the literature].

On account of a recently developed tinnitus, a young woman with the characteristic features of Klein-Waardenburg's syndrome (impairment of hearing, partial albinism, telecanthus) was hospitalised. The mother and the sister of the patient were also affected by the syndrome, albeit to a lesser degree. The otological aspects of the disease are described. Additionally, the possible association of this genetically determined disorder with certain other diseases, such as achalasia, Hirschsprung's disease or immunodeficiency, is discussed.

[Minor abnormalities of the internal ear. Radioclinical correlations].

Moderately severe cochleovestibular disorders of often late onset may arise from minor dysplasias of the internal ear. Diagnosis of these bone dysplasias is radiologic. The problem that arises is that of the indications for radiotomography of the internal ear, insofar as on the one hand no certain radioclinical equivalence exists, and on the other hand this radiologic examination is of greater diagnostic than therapeutic value.

Harmonic acceleration tests as a measure of vestibular compensation.

The material presented in excerpted from patient evaluations. The study was performed with the use of the Contraves rotary chair. This testing modality was used at each patient visit. All other conventional auditory and ENG tests were also performed. These patients have been selected to illustrate the value of the harmonic acceleration (HA) test as a modality for monitoring patient progress. The HA graphs produced were a result of the presence or absence of central vestibular compensation. The findings on these investigations further confirm that HA test provide an objective monitor for vestib

Comparison of human subjective and oculomotor responses to sinusoidal vertical linear acceleration.

Human subjects were vertically oscillated in the dark over a frequency range of 1-0.02 HZ at peak-to-peak acceleration amplitudes of 0.2-0.6 g, using both a vertical movement simulator and real flight. Subjective tracking of the movement was unreliable and showed no systematic dependence of phase upon frequency. In contrast, reflex oculomotor response, although weak, clearly demonstrated progressive and substantial phase lag with increasing frequency. The similarity of this characteristic to that previously obtained from brainstem neural responses in cat suggests the oculomotor response was pr

[Presentation and treatment of stapes dislocation and subluxation (author's transl)].

The symptomatology, especially vestibular, and the surgical findings in traumatic dislocation of the stapes into the oval window are described in 2 patients, one of whom seen 1 3/4 h after the accident and the other after 12 days. The main indication for exploratory tympanotomy was change of the spontaneous nystagmus from an irritative to a paretic type. Special attention should be given to positional nystagmus, which increases on turning onto the affected side, the mechanism for which is apparently similar to the positional vertigo of labyrinthine fistulae. Hearing was preserved in both patie

The effect of gravity of positional alcohol nystagmus phase II in man.

On request from the Swedish state authorities for health and civil air transport (Socialstyrelsen and Luftfartsstyrelsen) experiments were performed in order to establish the duration of the vestibular disturbances after alcohol intake related to rules for aviation safety. It is known that the threshold for provocation of positional alcohol nystagmus (PAN) is lowered under the influence of gavity forces above normal. It has been suggested that PAN II could be provoked by g-loads as late as 48 hours after a small alcohol intake. Our experiments were performed in a human centrifuge with g-values

[Lesions of the vertical and horizontal systems in the optokinetic vestibular system].

Symptoms of vestibulo-ocular disturbances may be classified into two major groups; i.e., vertical plane and horizontal plane disturbances. Vertical plane symptoms arise from midline lesions of the cerebellum or the brainstem and also from diffuse or symmetrical lesions to either. Vertical plane symptoms also arise from lesions which simultaneously effect both peripheral vestibular systems. Horizontal plane symptoms originate from a unilateral disturbance in the vestibular system. Thus, vertical plane symptoms indicate bilateral disturbances and the symptoms appear symmetrically in the eyes, tr
