BACKGROUND: Our objective is to show the effect that standardization of surgical trays has on the number of instruments sterilized and on cost.
METHODS: We reviewed our most commonly used surgical trays with the 3 general thoracic surgeons in our division and agreed upon the least number of surgical instruments needed for mediastinoscopy, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, robotic thoracic surgery, and thoracotomy.

BACKGROUND: We compared the clinical outcomes and cost-efficiency of surgical approaches (sternotomy-open, video assisted thoracoscopic surgery, and robotic assisted thoracic surgery) for thymectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric video-assisted thoracic surgery closure of patent ductus arteriosus can now be performed on a routine basis. We review here our entire experience with this technique.
METHODS: Three hundred and thirty two consecutive patients underwent video-assisted closure of patent ductus arteriosus from September 1991 to September 1996. Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital foregut anomalies, often detected incidentally. We report the case of a 24-year-old female who was incidentally detected during a routine health check-up to have a mediastinal mass. Preoperative chest computed tomography imaging suggested a benign bronchogenic cyst. Minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was planned for its excision. Here, we report a case of catamenial pneumothorax that occurred during endometriosis treatment. A 46-year-old woman presented with a history of right pneumothorax. OBJECTIVE: To improve the results of thoracoscopic anatomic lung resections (lobectomy) via reducing the incidence of intraoperative and early surgical complications.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study enrolled 479 patients who underwent thoracoscopic lobectomy. We determined the main criteria of complications: injury of vascular structures with severe bleeding, damage of the bronchi and adjacent organs.
RESULTS: Potentially life-threatening conditions requiring additional surgical manipulations (bleeding in 35 patients, bronchial trauma in 3 patients) were diagnosed in 7.9% (38/479) of cases.

Surgery has proven superiority over medical management for patients with nonthymomatous myasthenia gravis. The key is complete resection of the gland, which can be achieved with various techniques.
