We aimed to test a novel concept based on multiple IOL-implantation, targeting spectacle independence for patients with high and excessive myopia (26.0 mm < axial length; 6.0 D < refractive error). Therefore, we introduced the first results of five patients with high myopia. After clear lens extraction, one eye was targeted to emmetropia, and the other to mild myopia by implanting monofocal capsular bag IOLs with appropriate refractive powers in each case. The emmetropic eye was aimed to result in magnification and improved distance vision, while the mild myopic eye was supposed to ensure good

Retinoblastoma is an ocular malignancy that can put a patient's sight and, in some instances, life at risk. Here we report the case of a 2-year-old child who presented to her pediatrician with a 2-week history of left-sided leukocoria caused by retinoblastoma. Results of traditional office-based vision screening and automated vision screening, which often identify but are not specifically designed to detect rare diseases such as retinoblastoma, had been normal in the antecedent 7 months. She underwent enucleation of the left eye and has done well postoperatively. This case highlights the impor

Parietal lesions in humans can produce a specific disruption of visually guided hand movement, termed optic ataxia. The fact that the deficit mainly occurs in peripheral vision suggests that reaching in foveal and extrafoveal vision rely on two different neural substrates. In the present study, we have directly tested this hypothesis by event-related fMRI in healthy subjects. Brain activity was measured when participants reached toward central or peripheral visual targets. Our results confirm the existence of two systems, differently modulated by the two conditions. Reaching in central vision

SIGNIFICANCE: Intervention strategies for post-mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) ocular motor disorders vary across disciplines and include watchful waiting, vestibular rehabilitation, vision rehabilitation/vision therapy, and optical intervention. However, evidence supporting their effectiveness is limited, highlighting the need for high-quality randomized controlled trials with standardized testing, diagnostic criteria, and reassessment of ocular motor function after intervention.
BACKGROUND: Ocular motor disorders occur frequently after mTBI.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to conduct a sco

IMPORTANCE: Monitoring young children with optic pathway gliomas (OPGs) for visual deterioration can be difficult owing to age-related noncompliance. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) measures of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness have been proposed as a surrogate marker of vision but this technique is also limited by patient cooperation.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether measures of circumpapillary RNFL thickness, acquired with handheld OCT (HH-OCT) during sedation, can differentiate between young children with and without vision loss from OPGs.

PURPOSE: We propose and evaluate the modifications of a light sword lens (LSL) to obtain better performance for distance vision while maintaining good operation for near and intermediate vision.
METHODS: The modifications consisted of assigning angular or circular windows for distance vision while rescaling the LSL profile in the remaining area of the element. The objective performance of the redesigned LSLs was verified numerically by the Strehl ratio and experimentally using correlation coefficients and Michelson contrast. Subjective assessments were provided by monocular visual acuity (VA)

BACKGROUND: This study examines the following questions: In moderately disabled readers, will temporal vision-processing therapy procedures that benefit reading comprehension, visual attention, and oculomotor skills ameliorate M-cell processing deficits as measured with coherent motion threshold testing? And will the results show a corresponding improvement in oral reading and verbal skills?
METHOD: A sample of 16 moderately disabled readers, evaluated in a study completed 6 months earlier, were retested with another form of the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test. Each participant was additionally

A 52-year-old woman presented with a two-week history of progressive and painless bilateral central blurring of vision, associated with malaise and loss of appetite. Bariatric surgery was done 18 months prior, which was complicated by malnutrition. Ophthalmic examination showed reduced visual acuity and color vision (red-green color vision deficiency) bilaterally with no relative afferent pupillary defect. Examinations of the anterior segment and fundus were unremarkable. A Humphreys visual field test revealed bilateral central scotoma. Optical coherence tomography of the retinal nerve fiber l

The objective is to review the most common causes of vision loss in patients with diabetes with the goal of better managing patients with diabetic eye disease. In this review, the causes of vision loss, and the clinical evaluation and management of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are outlined. Patients with diabetes mellitus have an increased risk of vision loss and blindness. In patients with diabetes, the primary mechanism responsible for vision loss is centrally involved DME or clinically significant macular edema (CSME), defined as vascular leakage resulting in f

Performance of fine motor skills (FMS) assessed by a clinical test battery has been associated with reading achievement in school-age children. However, the nature of this association remains to be established. The aim of this study was to assess FMS in children with reading difficulties using two experimental tasks, and to determine if performance is associated with reduced binocular function. We hypothesized that in comparison to an age- and sex-matched control group, children identified with reading difficulties will perform worse only on a motor task that has been shown to rely on binocula

BACKGROUND: Vision loss from glaucoma has traditionally been described as loss of "peripheral vision." In this prospective study, we aimed to improve our clinical understanding of the visual symptoms caused by glaucoma by asking patients specific detailed questions about how they see.
METHODS: Patients who were clinically diagnosed with various types and stages of glaucoma were included. All had a comprehensive ocular examination, including Octopus visual field testing. Patients were excluded if they had other ocular conditions that affected their vision, including cornea, lens or retina path

The purpose of this study is to present baseline data from a longitudinal study assessing behavioral factors in three groups of boys in Israel with varying myopia prevalence. Ultra-Orthodox (N = 57), religious (N = 67), and secular (N = 44) Jewish boys (age 8.6 ± 1.4 years) underwent cycloplegic autorefraction and axial-length measurement. Time-outdoors and physical-activity were assessed objectively using an Actiwatch. Ocular history, educational factors, and near-work were assessed with a questionnaire. Group effects were tested and mixed effects logistic and linear regression were used to e

Peripheral refraction is believed to be involved in the development of myopia. The aim of this study was to compare the relative peripheral refraction (RPR) at four different levels of illuminance, ranging from photopic conditions to complete darkness, using an open-field autorefraction method. The RPR was calculated for each eccentricity by subtracting central from peripheral autorefraction measurements. The study included 114 myopic eyes from 114 subjects (mean age of 21.81 ± 1.91 years) and the mean difference in RPR between scotopic and photopic conditions (0 and 300 lux, respectively) was

Undesirable living environment may impose risk on myopia development. Furthermore, peripheral refractive error was suggested to contribute to juvenile eye growth modulation. This study aimed to investigate the interaction between peripheral refractive error and living environment in relation to central refractive status in Hong Kong schoolchildren. Central and peripheral refractive errors, axial length (AL), and corneal radius of curvature (CR) were measured in 573 schoolchildren (age 9.5 ± 0.9 years). The AL/CR ratio was used to represent the central refractive status, accounting for non-cycl

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if control observers can be used as surrogates to predict visual acuity (VA) of patients with Down syndrome (DS).
METHODS: Thirty adults with DS were enrolled in a clinical trial testing three refraction types: clinical refraction and two using wavefront aberration measures to optimize the metrics pupil fraction tessellated (PFSt) and visual Strehl ratio (VSX). Monocular VA was obtained through habitual refractions and each experimental refraction type. Five controls without DS viewed acuity charts simulating the retinal image produced when
