Underwater Bionic Self-Healing Superhydrophobic Coating with the Synergetic Effect Of Hydrogen Bonds and Self-Formed Bubbles.

The self-healing ability of superhydrophobic surfaces in air has attracted tremendous additions in recent years. Once the superhydrophobic surface is damaged underwater, water seeps into gaps among micro/nano structures. The air film diffuses into water and eventually disappears during immersion without actively replenishing the gas, which results in the impossible of self-healing. Here, an underwater self-healing superhydrophobic coating with the synergetic effect of hydrogen bonds and self-formed bubbles via the spraying method is fabricated. The movement of hydrogen bonds of the prepared po

Influence of aging of PEEK attachment inserts on the pull-off force of implant-retained overdentures - A laboratory study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study is to investigate the influence of mechanical stress as well as cleaning agents on the performance of various polyether ether ketone (PEEK) inserts for implant-retained overdentures (IOD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three different standard PEEK inserts were subjected to rapid artificial aging through storage in chemical denture cleaning agents (acetic acid, sodium hypochlorite, or sparkling denture cleaner) as well as demineralized water. The pre-aged PEEK inserts were then placed in unilateral IOD and subjected to 200,000 chewing loads (5 kg ~ 50 N), wit

Impaired initial development and behavior in zebrafish exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of widely used pesticides.

Pesticides reach water bodies through different routes, either owing to incorrect packaging disposal, direct application to control macrophytes, leaching from fields, or natural degradation processes. In the aquatic environment, adverse effects in non-target species that come in contact with these substances are poorly understood. Currently, the most used pesticides are glyphosate (GBH) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid-based herbicides (DBH), as its presence in water bodies is already known, we used environmental concentrations and our exposure time comprised the entire period of organogenes

Tripleurin XIIc: Peptide Folding Dynamics in Aqueous and Hydrophobic Environment Mimic Using Accelerated Molecular Dynamics.

Peptaibols are a special class of fungal peptides with an acetylated N-terminus and a C-terminal 1,2-amino alcohol along with non-standard amino acid residues. New peptaibols named tripleurins were recently identified from a strain of the filamentous fungal species Trichoderma pleuroti, which is known to cause green mould disease on cultivated oyster mushrooms. To understand the mode of action of these peptaibols, the three-dimensional structure of tripleurin (TPN) XIIc, an 18-mer peptide, was elucidated using an enhanced sampling method, accelerated MD, in water and chloroform solvents. Non-s

Aquaporin 9 is expressed in the epididymis of immature and mature pigs.

Aquaporins (AQPs) are channel proteins that facilitate the transepithelial and bidirectional movement of water. AQP9 is an aquaporin that is expressed in the mammalian epididymis. This water transport contributes to epididymal sperm concentration. This study aimed to examine the morphology of epididymal epithelium in piglets and boars, as well as the expression and immunolocalization of AQP9. The piglets presented an epididymal epithelium in differentiation with principal, basal and apical cells. The cellular population of the epididymal epithelium in boars consisted of principal, basal, apica

Cyanobacterial Toxins of the Laurentian Great Lakes, Their Toxicological Effects, and Numerical Limits in Drinking Water.

Cyanobacteria are ubiquitous phototrophic bacteria that inhabit diverse environments across the planet. Seasonally, they dominate many eutrophic lakes impacted by excess nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) forming dense accumulations of biomass known as cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms or cyanoHABs. Their dominance in eutrophic lakes is attributed to a variety of unique adaptations including N and P concentrating mechanisms, N₂ fixation, colony formation that inhibits predation, vertical movement via gas vesicles, and the production of toxic or otherwise bioactive molecules. While some of these

The multiple roles of guanylate cyclase C, a heat stable enterotoxin receptor.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Guanylate cyclase C (GC-C) is a transmembrane receptor that is expressed primarily on intestinal epithelial cells. Activation of this receptor by its endogenous peptide ligands initiates cyclic guanosine monophosphate-dependent (cGMP) salt and water movement in the intestine. GC-C is targeted by the enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli heat-stable enterotoxin STa, which deregulates this pathway and causes secretory diarrhea. This review discusses current work on the physiological function of GC-C in the intestine. RECENT FINDINGS: Familial GC-C mutations demonstrate that epithe

Protease activation and the signal transduction pathway regulating motility in sperm from the water strider Aquarius remigis.

Many motile processes are regulated such that movement occurs only upon activation of a signaling cascade. Sperm from a variety of species are initially quiescent and must be activated prior to beating. The signaling events leading to the activation and regulation of sperm motility are not well characterized. Mature seminal vesicle sperm from the water strider Aquarius remigis are immotile in vitro, but vigorous motility is activated by trypsin. Trypsin-activated motility was blocked by pretreatment of the sperm with BAPTA-AM to chelate intracellular Ca(2+) and was partially rescued by subsequ

Effect of acute respiratory alkalosis and acidosis on intestinal ion transport in vivo.

The effects of acute respiratory alkalosis and acidosis on intestinal electrolyte transport were studied in adult Sprague-Dawley rats. During in situ intestinal perfusion, anesthetized animals were ventilated with 0, 3, or 8% CO2, creating states of alkalosis (pH 7.64 +/- 0.01), normocapnia (pH 7.45 +/- 0.01), or acidosis (pH 7.26 +/- 0.01), respectively. The plasma bicarbonate concentration decreased 2.0 mM during alkalosis and increased 2.1 mM during acidosis. The jejunum did not respond to the acid-base disturbances. In both the ileum and colon, alkalosis decreased the net absorption of wat

TRPV4 mediates low-humidity responses in epidermal keratinocytes.

Environmental humidity is a key determinant of organismal physiology and homeostasis. Although the genetic basis of humidity-driven responses is well established in invertebrates, the molecular and genetic mechanisms by which mammals respond to low humidity remain unclear. Here, using reconstructed 3D epidermal equivalents and a mouse model, we identify transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) as an important mediator of low-humidity-induced signaling and transcriptional responses in epidermal keratinocytes. In 3D skin models, low-humidity exposure induced rapid water movement, charact

Lymphatic Vascular Insufficiency and Focal Edema in Early Stages of Noncancer-Related Lymphedema.

Introduction: Lymph flows along the lymphatics due to spontaneous contraction. However, injury and inflammation may deteriorate lymphatic' s endothelial and muscle cells and valves. In consequence, lymphatic vessels (LVs) become insufficient. Their contraction strength and rate slow down, and then lymph flow stops. Our study aimed to investigate the changes in lymph flow in early lymphedema cases. Methods and Results: In 36 patients with unilateral lymphedema stages 0 and I, we performed indocyanine green (ICG) lymphography, lymphoscintigraphy, skin water concentration, and stiffness measureme

Towards the understanding of antibiotic occurrence and transport in groundwater: Findings from the Baix Fluvià alluvial aquifer (NE Catalonia, Spain).

Antibiotics are an increasing focus of interest due to their high detection frequency in the environment. However, their presence in water bodies is not regulated by environmental policies. This field study investigates, for the first time, the occurrence, behavior and fate of a selection of 53 antibiotics, including up to 10 chemical groups, in an alluvial aquifer originated from manure application in an agricultural region using hydrogeological, hydrochemical and isotopic approaches. Up to 11 antibiotics were found in groundwater corresponding to 4 different chemical groups: fluoroquinolones

Biomphalaria alexandrina in Egypt: past, present and future.

The African species of Biomphalaria appeared as a result of the relatively recent west-to-east trans-Atlantic dispersal of the Biomphalaria glabrata-like taxon. In Egypt, Biomphalaria alexandrina is the intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni. Biomphalaria alexandrina originated in the area between Alexandria and Rosetta and has historically been confined to the Nile Delta. Schistosoma mansoni reached Egypt via infected slaves and baboons from the Land of Punt through migrations that occurred as early as the Vth Dynasty. The suggestion of the presence of Schistosoma mansoni infection in Lowe

Effect of hypoxia on permeability of pulmonary endothelium of canine visceral pleura.

To determine if hypoxia increases the permeability of the pulmonary capillaries of the visceral pleura, water and protein movement across visceral pleura of isolated blood-perfused lungs ventilated with 20% O2-5% CO2 or 0% O2-5% CO2 was analyzed in terms of a two-compartment model of fluid exchange. Lungs from mongrel dogs were enclosed in a water-impermeable membrane, thereby creating an artificial visceral pleural space (VPS); fluid flux was determined as the filtration or reabsorption of water and protein in the VPS. Hypoxic vasoconstriction was prevented by adding verapamil to the perfusat

Inherited Tubulopathies of the Kidney: Insights from Genetics.

The kidney tubules provide homeostasis by maintaining the external milieu that is critical for proper cellular function. Without homeostasis, there would be no heartbeat, no muscle movement, no thought, sensation, or emotion. The task is achieved by an orchestra of proteins, directly or indirectly involved in the tubular transport of water and solutes. Inherited tubulopathies are characterized by impaired function of one or more of these specific transport molecules. The clinical consequences can range from isolated alterations in the concentration of specific solutes in blood or urine to seri

Hyponatraemia masking the diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis.

Patients with acute hyponatraemia present with neurologic symptoms resulting from cerebral oedema induced by water movement into the brain. The author reports a male patient who presented to our emergency department with headache for 3 days and confusion for a day. The reported patient was on two immunosuppressive drugs, namely prednisone and azathiorprine for his ulcerative colitis. Laboratory data were consistent with syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) which was appropriately corrected; however his mental status deteriorated. The patient's initial presentation w

Unique form of propriospinal myoclonus as a possible complication of an enteropathogenic toxin.

Propriospinal myoclonus is an uncommon form of spinal myoclonus propagated, presumably, by slowly conducting polysynaptic intraspinal pathways. Although most patients demonstrate no clear etiology, a variety of disorders have been linked to this abnormal movement, including trauma, multiple sclerosis, tumors, and infectious disorders such as herpes zoster, human immunodeficiency virus, and Lyme disease. We describe 2 young male patients from the same town in Northern Ontario, Canada, exposed to an outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 from contaminated municipal water, who developed identical c

Idiopathic paroxysmal kinesigenic choreoathetosis: precipitation of attacks by vestibular stimulation.

A 24-year-old woman presented with a 3.5-year history of paroxysmal dystonia that was precipitated by sudden movement, especially when she started to walk. It was characterised by shrugging of shoulders, flexion of the neck and thoracic spine, and stiffness of the right leg followed by falls. Each attack lasted for less than 5min. Inadequate sleep and stress were exacerbating factors. There was no similar family history. Physical examination and investigations were normal. The following manoeuvres that caused vestibular stimulation precipitated attacks: turning her head from side to side while

Twelve-year follow-up of a replanted incisor.

A case report with a 12-yr follow-up of a replanted maxillary incisor is presented. A maxillary incisor, #8, with incomplete root formation was replanted without splinting following a 2-h sojourn in salt water. The pulp responded positively to the electric pulp tester for 2 yr. There was no response to the electric pulp tester 5 yr postoperatively. Although there was some external root resorption, the root appeared to have reached normal length. Two parallel vertical radiolucent slits were present in a trabeculated substance in the site normally occupied by the pulp. This case illustrates an e

The effects of phytophagous insects on water and soil nutrient concentrations and fluxes through forest stands of the Level II monitoring network in the UK.

The effects of insect defoliators on throughfall and soil nutrient fluxes were studied in coniferous and deciduous stands at five UK intensive monitoring plots (1998 to 2008). Links were found between the dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) fluxes through the forest system to biological activity within the canopy. Underlying soil type determined the leaching or accumulation of these elements. Under oak, monitored at two sites, frass from caterpillars of Tortrix viridana and Operophtera brumata added direct deposition of ~16kgha(-1)extra N during defoliation. Peaks of
