O blood type is not associated with worse coagulopathy or outcome in exsanguinating trauma.

BACKGROUND: Despite improving understanding of trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC), mortality and morbidity due to exsanguinating trauma remain high. Increased complications due to hemorrhage have been reported in blood group O, possibly due to reduced levels of von Willebrand factor (vWF). METHODS: An urban level 1 adult trauma center registry was retrospectively queried. Patients receiving ≥6 units of pRBC within 4 h of presentation were included. Patient demographics, admission labs and outcomes were obtained. Univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: 56

Venom from Loxosceles Spiders Collected in Southeastern and Northeastern Brazilian Regions Cause Hemotoxic Effects on Human Blood Components.

Spiders of the genus Loxosceles represent a public health problem in Brazil due to the severity of the cutaneous and systemic effects that may result from their bite. In the systemic form of loxoscelism, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and disseminated intravascular coagulation can occur. Despite the seriousness of Loxosceles accidents, the venom of some species has not yet been properly characterized considering these hemotoxic effects, such as that of Loxosceles amazonica, Loxosceles aff. Variegata, and Loxosceles similis. To better understand their toxic potential, this study aimed to c

Influence of ABO blood group on von Willebrand factor tests in healthy Saudi blood donors.

: Von Willebrand disease is a common bleeding disorder. The wide variation in von Willebrand factor (VWF) levels between and within normal individuals highlights the clinical challenge of defining its cutoff value. Although studies on the influence of ethnicity on ABO phenotypes and the levels of VWF have been carried out on different ethnicities, there is a lack of such data among Arab population. We aimed to evaluate the correlation of ABO phenotypes with all the parameters of the minimal test panel of VWF including VWF antigen, VWF activity using the ristocetin cofactor and the collagen bin

ABO hemolytic disease: a comparative study of clinical severity and delayed anemia.

The hospital and clinic records of 230 neonates with ABO hemolytic disease (HD) were reviewed. There was no significant difference in clinical severity between AO-HD and BO-HD as measured by (1) number of neonates with hyperbilirubinemia and/or those requiring exchange transfusion; (2) hemoglobin concentration; (3) reticulocyte count; (4) bilirubin concentration; and (5) incidence of anemia after discharge from the hospital. There was no difference in the hemoglobin concentrations measured at between four and eight weeks of age in 39 control infants and infants with either AO-HD or BO-HD who d

Human allogeneic AB0/Rh-identical umbilical cord blood cells in the treatment of juvenile patients with cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND AIMS: The term "cerebral palsy" (CP) encompasses many syndromes that emerge from brain damage at early stages of ontogenesis and manifest as the inability to retain a normal body position or perform controlled movements. Existing methods of CP treatment, including various rehabilitation strategies and surgical and pharmacological interventions, are mostly palliative, and there is no specific therapy focused on restoring injured brain function. METHODS: During a post-registration clinical investigation, the safety and efficacy of intravenous infusion of allogeneic human leukocyte an

Maternal-child blood group incompatibility and other perinatal events increase the risk for early-onset type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus.

The nationwide Swedish Childhood Diabetes Registry, which ascertains 99% of recent-onset Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic children (0-14 years) in Sweden, was linked with the Swedish Medical Birth Registry. A matched case-control study was carried out analysing about 20 perinatal variables concerning mother and child. A total of 2757 infants who became diabetic during the period 1978-1988 were analysed. For each case infant three control children were randomly selected from among all infants born in the same year and at the same delivery unit as the case infant. The following statistically

Effects of ABO-Incompatible Blood Transfusion on Immune Response and Rejection After Organ Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Peri-operative blood transfusion is common during solid-organ transplantation, yet the impact of ABO-incompatible (ABOi) blood exposure on post-transplant immunity and acute rejection (AR) remains uncertain. METHODS: We assembled a multicenter cohort of 468 adult kidney, liver and heart recipients (2018-2024). Detailed, time-stamped transfusion records were linked to serial immune-phenotyping (30-plex cytokines, flow-cytometric cell subsets) collected from pre-operative baseline to 12 months. The causal effect of ABOi transfusion on biopsy-proven AR was estimated with marginal str

Anti-A and anti-B titers in A, B and O whole blood donors: Beyond "dangerous O".

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hemolytic transfusion reactions (HTRs) pose significant risks in transfused patients, with anti-A and anti-B antibodies in donor plasma being potential contributing factors. Despite advancements in component preparation, HTRs remain a concern, particularly with apheresis-derived platelets. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of high anti-A and anti-B titers among A, B, and O blood group donors and to explore factors associated with high titers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted over 18 months, enrolling 978 participa

[Para-Bombay phenotype due to bi-allelic heterozygous base deletions of FUT1 gene].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic mechanism underlying a case with para-Bombay phenotype. METHODS: The ABO and Lewis phenotype were identified with serological methods. The coding regions of exons 6 and 7 of the ABO and FUT1 genes were amplified with PCR and directly sequenced. Haploid sequence analysis was carried out on the variant sites of the FUT1 gene. RESULTS: Serological analysis confirmed that the proband has a rare para-Bombay phenotype. Direct sequencing revealed that he was a B.01/O.01.02 heterozygote for the ABO gene, and had heterozygous deletion for the 768 and 881-882 sites of

Effective desensitization for a strong donor-specific HLA antibody in a case of HLA-mismatched allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation.

We describe a unique ABO compatible and 9/10 HLA-matched case of successful allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) after effective desensitization of a strong anti-HLA-A24 donor-specific antibody (DSA) with mean fluorescence intensity of approximately 18 000. Due to absence of a suitable matched unrelated donor the patient sibling was considered the best available donor, and it was decided to desensitize patient prior to transplant. The strength of HLA-A24 DSA slowly decreased over the course of treatment, necessitating a total of 23 sessions of therapeutic plasma exchange in orde

Neonatal and pediatric platelet transfusions: current concepts and controversies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review, we focus on three specific concepts related to platelet transfusion in the neonatal and pediatric population: choice of transfusion threshold; use of ABO-mismatched platelets; transfusion of pathogen-reduced or inactivated platelets. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent trials support the use of lower platelet transfusion thresholds (25 000/μl) in preterm neonates, although data is limited to guide transfusion among more mature neonates. In children, there is low-level evidence as to what the prophylactic platelet transfusion threshold should be in many situations of thr

[Diagnosis and management of pure red cell aplasia].

Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) is a type of bone marrow failure syndrome (stem cell failure) and is characterized by severe normocytic, normochromic anemia associated with reticulocytopenia, and the absence of erythroblasts in otherwise normal bone marrow. PRCA may be congenital or acquired, and the acquired form of chronic PRCA may present as a primary hematological disease in the absence of any other diseases or secondary to thymoma, lymphoproliferative disorders, infections, and collagen vascular diseases or after exposure to various drugs or chemicals. The most common types of acquired chron
