The state of bone mineral density has not been properly examined yet in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and the pathogenetically associated syntropic comorbid lesions of organs and systems. In a randomized manner, after stratification by the presence of SLE, we enrolled 123 premenopausal women aged 21 to 51 years into the study. Patients with SLE, depending on the diagnosed pathogenetically associated syntropic comorbid lesions of organs and systems, were stratified into twenty groups (with hemorrhagic vasculitis, capillaritis, Raynaud syndrome, atherosclerosis, livedo reticul

INTRODUCTION: Once diagnosed with a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), patients are advised to offload, keeping pressure off the foot in order to facilitate ulcer healing. An increase in offloading is often accompanied by reductions in physical activity which can worsen the overall health of patients. While unable to perform traditional forms of upright activity, one mode of exercise that would allow patients to be physically active while adhering to offloading instruction is seated arm ergometry. The merits of tailored aerobic exercise in DFU remain unexplored.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a prospec

PURPOSE: Fracture risk in hypothyroid patients is debated, and since the effects of hypothyroidism on bone microarchitecture and strength are unclarified, we investigated these characteristics by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT).
METHODS: Two approaches were used: a cross-sectional control study, comparing 32 hypothyroid women (mean age; 47 ± 12 years) suffering from Hashimoto's thyroiditis with 32 sex-, age-, and menopause-matched healthy controls; a prospective study, where 27 of the women were reexamined 1 year after restoration of euthyroidism. HR-pQCT

Athletic populations require high-precision body composition assessments to identify true change. Least significant change determines technical error via same-day consecutive tests but does not integrate biological variation, which is more relevant for longitudinal monitoring. The aim of this study was to assess biological variation using least significant change measures from body composition methods used on athletes, including surface anthropometry (SA), air displacement plethysmography (BOD POD), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (BIS). PURPOSE: It is still not clear whether to screen women with primary premature ovarian insufficiency for autoimmunity. Moreover, a possible association of autoimmunity with decreased bone mass density in premature ovarian insufficiency patients has not been evaluated. Thus, the objectives of this study were to review our experience with the use of an autoimmune screening panel in premature ovarian insufficiency women and to focus on bone mass density.
METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, 76 chromosomally normal women with primary premature ovarian insufficiency were included. The main out

AIMS: The majority of children with complex congenital heart disease (CHD) survive into adulthood due to advances in medical care. Adult patients with CHD have an increased incidence of diagnoses related to ageing such as heart failure, dementia, cancer and sarcopenia, despite a relatively low age. They also have a shorter life expectancy. It is unknown if their bone structures also show signs of premature ageing. We therefore investigated Bone Mineral Content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) in an adult population with complex CHD.
METHODS: The total body BMC and BMD was examined using d

PURPOSE: Vitamin K may play a potential role in bone metabolism, although further evidence is needed. The mechanisms behind its skeletal effects and optimum intake for maintaining bone health remain poorly defined. To elucidate these two issues, we investigated the association between circulating vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) concentrations with fracture risk, bone mineral density (BMD), hip geometry and plasma dephospho-uncarboxylated-Matrix Gla Protein (dp-ucMGP), an extra-hepatic vitamin K dependent protein (VKDP), in post-menopausal osteoporosis (PMO).
METHODS: We studied 374 women aged (mea

HIV-infected men have increased rates of osteoporosis and fracture compared to HIV-uninfected men. Testosterone use among HIV-infected men is common. In HIV-uninfected men, testosterone increases bone mineral density (BMD), but its effects have not been evaluated in HIV-infected men. In a substudy of Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS), the Bone Strength Substudy (BOSS) enrolled 202 HIV-infected and 201 HIV-uninfected men aged between 50 and 69 years. Study participants underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the lumbar spine (LS), total hip (TH), and femoral neck (FN) and detaile

OBJECTIVE: We have reported low bone mineral density (BMD), impaired bone structure, and increased fracture risk in participants with anorexia nervosa (AN) and normal-weight oligoamenorrheic athletes (OAs). However, data directly comparing compartment-specific bone parameters in participants with AN, OAs, and controls are lacking.
DESIGN: A total of 468 female participants 14 to 21.9 years old were included: 269 with AN, 104 OAs, and 95 normal-weight eumenorrheic controls. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry was used to assess areal BMD (aBMD) of the whole body less head (WBLH), spine, and hip.

Percentage of body fat (%BF) is estimated in clinical practice using anthropometric equations, but little is known about their reliability in overweight/obese patients with type-2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to compare, in overweight/obese adults with type-2 diabetes, %BF estimated with several commonly used anthropometric equations and %BF measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA, Hologic). The %BF was measured with DXA in 40 patients aged 40-68 years with type-2 diabetes (mean HbA1c, 7.3 ± 0.9%). Body density was estimated in the same patients by means of four anthropometr

BACKGROUND: Low bone mass is common among adolescents with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia despite adequate transfusion and iron chelation. However, there are few reports regarding bone mineral density (BMD) among adolescents with nontransfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT). Indeed, only BMD data in patients with nontransfusion-dependent (NTD) β-thalassemia intermedia have been reported. No previous study has investigated BMD among adolescents with NTD hemoglobin (Hb) E/β-thalassemia.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of low bone mass among adolescents with NTD Hb E/β-thalassemia and
