Musical imagery is the voluntary internal hearing of music in the mind without the need for physical action or external stimulation. Numerous studies have already revealed brain areas activated during imagery. However, it remains unclear to what extent imagined music responses preserve the detailed temporal dynamics of the acoustic stimulus envelope and, crucially, whether melodic expectations play any role in modulating responses to imagined music, as they prominently do during listening. These modulations are important as they reflect aspects of the human musical experience, such as its acqu

To determine candidate key proteins involved in synaptic transmission in the thalamus in tinnitus, we used bioinformatic methods by analyzin … ved for both systems, the auditory system and the motor system of the thalamus. Under conditions of acoustic stimulation, the GO-BP-enrichment analyses suggest that in the auditory system, tinnitus-related proteins may be involved in responses typically associated with "xenobiotic stimuli"; in the motor system, the activation of the dopaminergic system was observed. Auditory deprivation and stimulation can change the threshold of the acoustic middle ear reflex as well as loudness in adult listeners. However, it has remained unclear whether changes in these measures are due to the same mechanism. In this study, deprivation was achieved using a monaural earplug that was worn by listeners for 7 days. Acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) and categorical loudness ratings were measured using a blinded design in which the experimenter was unaware of which ear had been plugged. Immediately after terminating unilateral deprivation, ARTs were obtained at a lower sound

BACKGROUND: Noise exposure impairs outer hair cells (OHCs). The common basis for OHC dysfunction and loss by acoustic over-stimulation is represented by reactive oxygen species (ROS) overload that may affect the membrane structural organization through generation of lipid peroxidation.
METHODS: Here we investigated in OHC different functional zones the mechanisms linking metabolic functional state (NAD(P)H intracellular distribution) to the generation of lipid peroxides and to the physical state of membranes by two photon fluorescence microscopy.
RESULTS: In OHCs of control animals, a more o

OBJECTIVE: We investigated if anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (A-tDCS), applied over the supplementary motor areas (SMAs), could improve gait initiation in Parkinson's disease (PD) with freezing of gait (FOG).
METHODS: In this double-blinded cross-over pilot study, ten PD with FOG underwent two stimulation sessions: A-tDCS (1 mA, 10 min) and sham stimulation. Eight blocks of gait initiation were collected per session: (1) pre-tDCS, with acoustic cueing; (2) pre-tDCS, self-initiated (no cue); and (3-8) post-tDCS, self-initiated. Gait initiation kinetics were analyzed with two-wa

CONCLUSION: We believe that a tensor tympani reflex, in response to loud sound, is present in a minority of people, although its functional significance with regard to sound transmission is questionable. The absence of startle response in our stapedectomized subjects makes us question whether the tensor component of the startle response is large enough to be identified by manometry.
OBJECTIVES: This study was organized to examine reflex activity to stimulation by loud sound or by startle in the tensor tympani. Although many previous studies have been carried out, results have been contradicto

In recent years there has been an increasing percentage of cochlear implant (CI) users who have usable residual hearing in the contralateral, nonimplanted ear, typically aided by acoustic amplification. This raises the issue of the extent to which the signal presented through the cochlear implant may influence how listeners process information in the acoustically stimulated ear. This multicenter retrospective study examined pre- to postoperative changes in speech perception in the nonimplanted ear, the implanted ear, and both together. Results in the latter two conditions showed the expected i

Degeneration of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) and hair cells in the cochlea induced by aging, injury, ototoxic drugs, acoustic trauma, and various diseases is the major cause of hearing loss. Discovery of growth factors that can either prevent SGN and hair-cell death or stimulate hair-cell regeneration would be of great interest. Studies over the past several years have provided evidence that specific neurotrophins are potent survival factors for SGNs and protect these neurons from ototoxic drugs in vitro and in vivo. Current research focuses more on understanding the mechanism of hair-cell r

While the cochlea is considered the primary site of the auditory response to bone conduction (BC) stimulation, the paths by which vibratory energy applied to the skull (or other structures) reaches the inner ear are a matter of continued investigation. We present acoustical measurements of sound in the inner ear that separate out the components of BC stimulation that excite the inner ear via ossicular motion (compression of the walls of the ear canal or ossicular inertia) from the components that act directly on the cochlea (cochlear compression or inertia, and extra-cochlear 'third-window' pa

Congruent visual speech improves speech perception accuracy, particularly in noisy environments. Conversely, mismatched visual speech can alter what is heard, leading to an illusory percept that differs from the auditory and visual components, known as the McGurk effect. While prior transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and neuroimaging studies have identified the left posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) as a causal region involved in the generation of the McGurk effect, it remains unclear whether this region is critical only for this illusion or also for the more general benefits of c

Numerous behavioral studies have shown that visual function can improve with training, although perceptual refinements generally require weeks to months of training to attain. This, along with questions about long-term retention of learning, limits practical and clinical applications of many such paradigms. Here, we show for the first time in female and male human participants that just 10 d of visual training coupled with transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) over visual areas causes dramatic improvements in visual motion perception. Relative to control conditions and anodal stimulatio

OBJECTIVE: Brainwave entrainment (BWE), which uses rhythmic stimuli to alter brainwave frequency and thus brain states, has been investigated and used since the late 1800s, yet many clinicians and scientists are unaware of its existence. We aim to raise awareness and discuss its potential by presenting a systematic review of the literature from peer-reviewed journals on the psychological effects of BWE.
DATA SOURCES: Terms used to describe BWE and psychological outcomes were used to search English language studies from OVID Medline (1950-2007), PsychInfo (1806-2007), and Scopus.

BACKGROUND: Voice tremor (VT) is the involuntary and rhythmical phonatory instability of the voice. Recent findings suggest that unilateral deep brain stimulation of the ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim-DBS) can sometimes be effective for VT. In this exploratory analysis, we investigated the effect of Vim-DBS on VT and tested the hypothesis that unilateral thalamic stimulation is effective for patients with VT.
METHODS: Seven patients with VT and previously implanted bilateral Vim-DBS were enrolled in the study. Each patient was randomized and recorded performing sustained phonation during t

INTRODUCTION: Electrocochleography (ECochG) measures inner ear potentials in response to acoustic stimulation. In patients with cochlear implant (CI), the technique is increasingly used to monitor residual inner ear function. So far, when analyzing ECochG potentials, the visual assessment has been the gold standard. However, visual assessment requires a high level of experience to interpret the signals. Furthermore, expert-dependent assessment leads to inconsistency and a lack of reproducibility. The aim of this study was to automate and objectify the analysis of cochlear microphonic (CM) sign…

BACKGROUND: Language comprehension requires decoding of complex, rapidly changing speech streams. Detecting changes of frequency modulation (FM) within speech is hypothesized as essential for accurate phoneme detection, and thus, for spoken word comprehension. Despite past demonstration of FM auditory evoked response (FMAER) utility in language disorder investigations, it is seldom utilized clinically. This report's purpose is to facilitate clinical use by explaining analytic pitfalls, demonstrating sites of cortical origin, and illustrating potential utility.
RESULTS: FMAERs collected from c

BACKGROUND: Language recovery is limited in moderate to severe post-stroke aphasia patients. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has emerged as a promising tool in improving language dysfunctions caused by post-stroke aphasia, but the treatment outcome is as yet mixed. Considerable evidence has demonstrated the essential involvement of the cerebellum in a variety of language functions, suggesting that it may be a potential stimulation target of TMS for the treatment of post-stroke aphasia. Theta burst stimulation (TBS) is a specific pattern of rTMS with shorter stimulation time
