Using nanotechnology in zinc supplementation may increase efficiency, reducing offered amounts and, therefore, allowing for lower cost and minimized environmental damage due to Zn contamination. This study aims to evaluate the kinetics of zinc, derived from micro- and nanometric zinc oxide, by radiolabeling this mineral through neutron activation. Eight Santa Ines ewes, around 10 months old and 23.6 ± 2.0 kg of body weight, were split into two treatments. After adaptation, they were transferred to metabolism evaluation cages, receiving capsules containing 50 mg of 65ZnO (with average 54.85 kBq

N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a naturally occurring amine and psychedelic compound, found in plants, animals, and humans. While initial studies reported only trace amounts of DMT in mammalian brains, recent findings have identified alternative methylation pathways and DMT levels comparable to classical neurotransmitters in rodent brains, calling for a re-evaluation of its biological role and exploration of this inconsistency. This study evaluated DMT's biosynthetic pathways, focusing on indolethylamine N-methyltransferase (INMT) and its isoforms, and possible regulatory mechanisms, including

Infectious and inflammatory processes during pregnancy in women provoke maternal immunity activation (MIA) and increase the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders in children. These disorders can lead to neurodegenerative diseases later in life. To study these effects, we evaluated the morphological and molecular biological changes in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of male and female Wistar rats on the 1st day of postnatal ontogenesis after LPS-induced MIA. The level of calprotectin in the blood serum of postpartum rats, the number and morphological properties of microglial cells in the hip

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular apicomplexan that causes toxoplasmosis in humans and animals. Central to its dissemination and pathogenicity is the ability to rapidly divide in the tachyzoite stage and infect any type of nucleated cell. Adaptation to different cell contexts requires high plasticity in which heat shock proteins (Hsps) could play a fundamental role. Tgj1 is a type I Hsp40 of T. gondii, an ortholog of the DNAJA1 group, which is essential during the tachyzoite lytic cycle. Tgj1 consists of a J-domain, ZFD, and DNAJ_C domains with a CRQQ C-terminal motif, which is us

The fungus Paracoccidioides lutzii is one of the species of the Paracoccidioides genus, responsible for a neglected human mycosis, endemic in Latin America, the paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM). In order to survive in the host, the fungus overcomes a hostile environment under low levels of oxygen (hypoxia) during the infectious process. The hypoxia adaptation mechanisms are variable among human pathogenic fungi and worthy to be investigated in Paracoccidoides spp. Previous proteomic results identified that P. lutzii responds to hypoxia and it has a functional homolog of the SrbA transcription fact

Problems related to aggression in young people are traditionally subsumed under the header of conduct problems, which include conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. Such problems in children and adolescents are an important societal and mental health problem. In this paper we present an evolutionarily informed developmental psychopathology view of conduct problems inspired by the NIMH Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative. We assume that while there are many pathways to conduct problems, chronic or temporary impairments in the domain of social cognition or mentalizing are a c

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) remains a leading opportunistic infection in patients with weakened immune systems. The fungus causing the infection belongs to the genus, Pneumocystis, and its members are found in a large variety of mammals. Adaptation to the lung environment of a host with an intact immune system has been a key to its successful survival. Unfortunately, the metabolic strategies used by these fungi to grow and survive in this context are largely unknown. There were considerable impediments to standard approaches for investigation of this unique pathogen, the most problematic bein

The application of new molecular approaches has permitted the differentiation of numerous strains belonging to the genus Bartonella and identification of new Bartonella species. However, the molecular typing of these organisms should be coupled with studies aimed at defining the biological properties of the newly described species. The long-history of co-adaptation between bartonella(1) bacteria and their mammalian hosts and possibly arthropod vectors provides a unique opportunity for applying this information for the sub-genus taxonomy. There can be a varying level of association between the

Triglycerides are one of the most efficient storage forms of free energy. Because of their insolubility in biological fluids, their transport between cells and tissues requires that they be assembled into lipoprotein particles. Genetic disruption of the lipoprotein assembly/secretion pathway leads to several human disorders associated with malnutrition and developmental abnormalities. In contrast, patients displaying inappropriately high rates of lipoprotein production display increased risk for the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Insights provided by diverse experimenta

Existing soft grippers often suffer from slow actuation, continuous energy consumption during grasp maintenance, and limited payload-to-weight ratios, which restrict their application in dynamic and unstructured environments. In addition, fixed-geometry designs and multi-actuator architectures frequently compromise geometric adaptability and increase control complexity. To address these limitations, this paper presents a three-finger adaptive bioinspired gripper driven by prestressed tape springs, inspired by the dual-dimensional prey-capture mechanism of Drosera capensis and the basal-scale a

The regulation of amino acid transport across the cell membrane by adaptive mechanisms has been studied in a variety of mesenchymal and epithelial cells and tissues of avian and mammalian origin. Changes in transport activity as a function of time under various in vitro conditions (amino acid dependence, active and inhibited protein synthesis) have been evaluated by measurements of initial entry rates with representative amino acids. Results and conclusions based on the adopted experimental approach include the following. (1) An adaptive control mechanism for the transport of neutral amino aci

Мarine cottoid fishes of the genus Triglopsis colonized large lakes of glacial genesis in Northern Europe and North America. The fourhorn sculpin Triglopsis quadricornis dispersed into post-glacial European lakes (e.g., Ladoga and Onega) from the Baltic Sea. The Great Lakes are inhabited by a freshwater species, Triglopsis thompsonii. Lacustrine forms of Triglopsis from North American and European lakes are at different stages of evolution, making them a suitable model for testing hypotheses about evolutionary patterns and rates. An integrative analysis of morphological, genetic, and biologica

Chronic restriction of a basic biological need induces adaptations to help meet requisites for survival. The adaptations to chronic restriction of sleep are unknown. A single episode of 10 days of partial sleep loss in rats previously was shown to be tolerated and to result in increased food intake and loss of body weight as principal signs. The purpose of the present experiment was to investigate the extent to which adaptation to chronic sleep restriction would ameliorate short-term effects and result in a changed internal phenotype. Rats were studied during 10 wk of multiple periods of restr

A decade of research has identified nitric oxide as a unique endogenous biologic mediator with functions as diverse as vasodilation, macrophage cytotoxicity, platelet adhesion, and memory formation. Measurement devices, previously used in research on atmospheric nitrogen oxides, are being adapted for and applied to clinical situations without approval, regulation, or rigorous testing, and with little understanding of how the devices work or their limitations. This article discusses the chemistry, manufacture, and measurement of nitrogen oxides.

Glutamine, the most abundant amino acid in human serum, serves not only as a key nutrient for maintaining normal cellular biological functions but also as an essential metabolic substrate for the proliferation and survival of tumor cells. Tumor cells exhibit a pronounced characteristic of "glutamine addiction" through metabolic reprogramming. This trait endows tumor cells with the dual capacity to exhibit both adaptability and vulnerability when confronted with regulated cell death (RCD) under metabolic stress, thereby opening up potential avenues for cancer therapy. This paper systematically

The Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) project provides a valuable resource for investigating gene regulation across various human tissues. However, its cross-sectional design introduces technical artifacts and batch effects related to donor demographics and tissue processing. These confounders obscure biological signals and distort multi-tissue analyses. We present GTEx_Pro, a Nextflow-based pipeline for preprocessing GTEx v8 transcriptomic data, enhancing multi-tissue comparability. It integrates TMM + CPM normalization and SVA batch effect correction to improve biological signal recovery whi

Microelectrode-based electrochemical (EC) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors are promising candidates for in vivo analysis of biologically important chemicals. However, limited selectivity in complicated biological systems and poor adaptability to electrochemically non-active species restrained their applications. Herein, we propose the concept of modulating the PEC output by a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process. The emission of energy donor was dependent on the concentration of target SO2 , which in turn served as the modulator of the photocurrent signal of the photoact

Fields studying movement generation, including robotics, psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience utilize concepts and tools related to the pervasiveness of variability in biological systems. The concept of variability and the measures for nonlinear dynamics used to evaluate this concept open new vistas for research in movement dysfunction of many types. This review describes innovations in the exploration of variability and their potential importance in understanding human movement. Far from being a source of error, evidence supports the presence of an optimal state of variability for

Cationic amino acid transporters (CATs), encoded by the SLC7A family, play essential roles in the uptake of arginine and other cationic amino acids, thereby regulating cellular metabolism, signaling, and immune responses. Among SLC7A transporters, SLC7A1-4 constitute the classical CAT family and have emerged as important regulators of tumor biology. Arginine is increasingly recognized as a critical metabolic resource within the tumor microenvironment. Consequently, dysregulated CAT expression can affect both cancer cell fitness and tumor-immune interactions. In this review, we summarize curren
