The relationship between resilience and neurophysiological stress in Special Operations Forces combat service members.

Military resilience research is increasing due to the growing literature associating resilience with stress adaptation. This study aimed to investigate which physiological stress adaptation components were associated with resilience in Special Operations Forces combat service members. Special Operations Forces combat service members (n = 117) self-reported resilience (ER89) and lifetime clinician-confirmed mild traumatic brain injury history. Participants also underwent transcranial Doppler ultrasonography to measure middle cerebral artery velocity during rest and a breath-holding task. Neithe

Role of Mitochondrial Reverse Electron Transport in ROS Signaling: Potential Roles in Health and Disease.

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) can cause oxidative damage and have been proposed to be the main cause of aging and age-related diseases including cancer, diabetes and Parkinson's disease. Accordingly, mitochondria from old individuals have higher levels of ROS. However, ROS also participate in cellular signaling, are instrumental for several physiological processes and boosting ROS levels in model organisms extends lifespan. The current consensus is that low levels of ROS are beneficial, facilitating adaptation to stress via signaling, whereas high levels of ROS are deleterious because they tri

Cardiac physiology and pathophysiology in pregnancy.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading indirect cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, accounting for nearly one third of maternal deaths during pregnancy. The burden of cardiovascular disease in pregnancy is increasing, as are the incidence of maternal morbidity and mortality. Normal physiologic adaptations to pregnancy, including increased cardiac output and plasma volume, may unmask cardiac conditions, exacerbate previously existing conditions, or create de novo complications. It is important for care providers to understand the normal physiologic changes of pregnancy and how they may im

Computer-simulated bone architecture in a simple bone-remodeling model based on a reaction-diffusion system.

Bone is a complex system with functions including those of adaptation and repair. To understand how bone cells can create a structure adapted to the mechanical environment, we propose a simple bone remodeling model based on a reaction-diffusion system influenced by mechanical stress. Two-dimensional bone models were created and subjected to mechanical loads. The conventional finite element method (FEM) was used to calculate stress distribution. A stress-reactive reaction-diffusion model was constructed and used to simulate bone remodeling under mechanical loads. When an external mechanical str

Human adaptation to high-altitude: A contemporary comparison of the oxygen cascade in Andean, Tibetan and Ethiopian highlanders.

Human populations native to high altitude have evolved distinct physiological adaptations to chronic hypoxia. This adaptation is evident in the O2 transport cascade. In this review, with brief inclusion of the related genetic adaptations, we compare the O2 cascade across three well-characterized high-altitude populations: Andeans (Aymara and Quechua), Tibetans/Sherpa and Ethiopians (Amhara and Oromo). We contrast the steps of the O2 cascade: (1) ventilation; (2) pulmonary O2 diffusion; (3) cardiac output and circulation; (4) haematological traits; and (5) tissue O2 utilization. Tibetans exhibi

AP2/ERF transcription factors in plant stress adaptation: evolutionary expansion, functional diversification and hormone crosstalk.

APETALA2/ethylene response factor (AP2/ERF) transcription factors constitute a plant-specific regulatory family that coordinates plant development, environmental stress responses, and hormone signaling. However, the contribution of AP2/ERF family expansion and functional diversification to environmental adaptation has not been fully integrated across evolutionary and mechanistic scales. This review synthesizes classical findings and representative advances from the past five years in structural classification, duplication-driven expansion, functional diversification, stress adaptation, and hor

Melatonin-mediated metabolic reprogramming and stress adaptation in plants.

Melatonin acts as a multifunctional regulator of plant stress adaptation by reprogramming primary and secondary metabolism and coordinating ROS, nitric oxide, and phytohormone signalling. Integrating metabolomics with transcriptomics and proteomics provides new insights into these mechanisms and highlights melatonin as a promising strategy for enhancing crop resilience and productivity under diverse environmental stresses. Plants, being sessile, are continuously exposed to diverse environmental challenges, which disrupt cellular homeostasis and reduce crop productivity. To survive under such c

Deciphering transcriptomic insights into climate adaptation in Etroplus suratensis (pearl spot) under combined thermal-saline stress.

Climate change poses significant challenges to aquaculture through rising temperatures and salinity fluctuations, necessitating insights into molecular adaptation mechanisms in resilient species like pearl spot (Etroplus suratensis) which is an euryhaline fish. This study performed de novo transcriptomic profiling of gill, liver, and kidney tissues from juvenile pearl spot exposed to combined temperature (28 °C control, 31 °C intermediate, 34 °C stress) and salinity (0 ppt freshwater, 15 ppt brackishwater) treatments over 90 days in triplicate setups. Calcineurin-Dependent Stress Adaptation Enables Caspofungin Heteroresistance Leading to Stable Resistance in Candida Glabrata.

Antifungal heteroresistance has emerged as a clinical challenge across diverse species. In Candida glabrata, however, it has rarely been reported. Here, we characterized heteroresistance in a multicenter collection of 156 C. glabrata isolates, revealing a 25% prevalence with caspofungin specificity and 37°C dependent phenotypes. Transcriptomic profiling of the heteroresistant subpopulation under escalating drug pressure revealed an adaptive program centered on cell cycle and cell wall integrity, including several members of the calcineurin pathway. Mechanically, we identified that the phenotyp

Take a deep BReath: Manipulating brassinosteroid homeostasis helps cereals adapt to environmental stress.

Global climate change leads to the increased occurrence of environmental stress (including drought and heat stress) during the vegetative and reproductive stages of cereal crop development. Thus, more attention should be given to developing new cereal cultivars with improved tolerance to environmental stress. However, during the development of new stress-tolerant cereal cultivars, the balance between improved stress responses (which occur at the expense of growth) and plant yield needs to be maintained. Thus, the urgent need for developing new cereal germplasm with improved stress tolerance co

Hypoxic responses in Oncorhynchus mykiss involve angiogenesis, lipid, and lactate metabolism, which may be triggered by the cortisol stress response and epigenetic methylation.

The incidence of hypoxia in water bodies is increasing more rapidly than aquatic life can adapt. This study aimed to determine the effects of hypoxia on fish physiology, as well as protein expression through proteomics. To do this, 40 rainbow trout were divided into normoxic control (11.5 mg/L dissolved oxygen) and hypoxic treatment (5 mg/L dissolved oxygen) tanks for a period of 7 days. Fish were then anesthetized and blood was sampled. Fish were then euthanized and heart and liver samples were taken. Blood glucose, cortisol and lipid, body and liver mass, fork length, hematocrit and, blood c

Adaption of body zinc pools in weaned piglets challenged with subclinical zinc deficiency.

The effects of subclinical Zn deficiency on depletion and redistribution of body Zn were studied in weaned piglets. Forty-eight weaned piglets (German-Large-White×Land-Race×Piétrain; 50 % female, 50 % male-castrated; body weight 8·5 (sd 0·27) kg) were fed restrictively (450 g/d) a basal maize-soyabean meal-based diet supplemented with varying amounts of ZnSO4.7H2O (analysed dietary Zn: 28·1, 33·6, 38·8, 42·7, 47·5, 58·2, 67·8, 88·0 mg/kg diet) for an experimental period of 8 d. Analyses comprised Zn concentrations in soft tissues. Statistical analyses included regression models and k-means clu

Human cardiac fibroblasts adaptive responses to controlled combined mechanical strain and oxygen changes in vitro.

Upon cardiac pathological conditions such as ischemia, microenvironmental changes instruct a series of cellular responses that trigger cardiac fibroblasts-mediated tissue adaptation and inflammation. A comprehensive model of how early environmental changes may induce cardiac fibroblasts (CF) pathological responses is far from being elucidated, partly due to the lack of approaches involving complex and simultaneous environmental stimulation. Here, we provide a first analysis of human primary CF behavior by means of a multi-stimulus microdevice for combined application of cyclic mechanical strai

Parallel genetic changes and nonparallel gene-environment interactions characterize the evolution of drug resistance in yeast.

Beneficial mutations are required for adaptation to novel environments, yet the range of mutational pathways that are available to a population has been poorly characterized, particularly in eukaryotes. We assessed the genetic changes of the first mutations acquired during adaptation to a novel environment (exposure to the fungicide, nystatin) in 35 haploid lines of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Through whole-genome resequencing we found that the genomic scope for adaptation was narrow; all adapted lines acquired a mutation in one of four late-acting genes in the ergosterol biosynthesis pathway, w

The effects of Ramadan intermittent fasting on athletic performance: recommendations for the maintenance of physical fitness.

The behavioural modifications that accompany Ramadan intermittent fasting (RIF) are usually associated with some alterations in the metabolic, physiological, and psychological responses of athletes that may affect sport performance. Muslim athletes who are required to train and/or compete during the month-long, diurnal fast must adopt coping strategies that allow them to maintain physical fitness and motivation if they are to perform at the highest level. This updated review aims to present the current state of knowledge of the effects of RIF on training and performance, focusing on key-factor

Intussusceptive angiogenesis: pillars against the blood flow.

Adaptation of vascular networks to functional demands needs vessel growth, vessel regression and vascular remodelling. Biomechanical forces resulting from blood flow play a key role in these processes. It is well-known that metabolic stimuli, mechanical forces and flow patterns can affect gene expression and remodelling of vascular networks in different ways. For instance, in the sprouting type of angiogenesis related to hypoxia, there is no blood flow in the rising capillary sprout. In contrast, it has been shown that an increase of wall shear stress initiates the splitting type of angiogenes

Global gradients of coral exposure to environmental stresses and implications for local management.

BACKGROUND: The decline of coral reefs globally underscores the need for a spatial assessment of their exposure to multiple environmental stressors to estimate vulnerability and evaluate potential counter-measures. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This study combined global spatial gradients of coral exposure to radiation stress factors (temperature, UV light and doldrums), stress-reinforcing factors (sedimentation and eutrophication), and stress-reducing factors (temperature variability and tidal amplitude) to produce a global map of coral exposure and identify areas where exposure depends on

Water relations and photosynthetic performance in Larix sibirica growing in the forest-steppe ecotone of northern Mongolia.

Shoot water relations were studied in Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) trees growing at the borderline between taiga and steppe in northern Mongolia. Larix sibirica is the main tree species in these forests covering 80% of Mongolia's forested area. Minimum shoot water potentials (Psi(m)) close to the point of zero turgor (Psi(0)) repeatedly recorded throughout the growing season suggest that the water relations in L. sibirica were often critical. The Psi(m) varied in close relation to the atmospheric vapor pressure deficit, whereas Psi(0) was correlated with monthly precipitation. Young

Respiratory responses to single and episodic hypoxia during development: mechanisms of adaptation.

The respiratory responses of the developmental subject to single and repeated episodes of hypoxia are distinct. During a single exposure, the fetus responds with an arrest of breathing activity, and the neonate, with excitation followed by depression (the biphasic response). Mechanisms under active consideration include chemosensory resetting, hypometabolism, prevalence of inhibitory neurotransmitter/modulator influence, and supramedullary regulation of control functions. When exposed to recurrent episodic hypoxia, neonates respond with relative hypoventilation, i.e. tolerance to a subsequent
