Interactions between pathways controlling posture and gait at the level of spinal interneurones in the cat.

The properties of three interneuronal populations controlling posture and locomotion are briefly reviewed. These are interneurones mediating reciprocal inhibition of antagonistic muscles and interneurones in pathways from secondary muscle spindle afferents to ipsilateral and contralateral motoneurones, respectively. It will be shown that these interneurones subserve a variety of movements, with functionally specialized subpopulations being selected under different conditions. Mechanisms for gating the activity of these neurones appear to be specific for each of them but to act in concert. Inte

Parapharyngeal space lesions syncope-syndrome. A newly proposed reflexogenic cardiovascular syndrome.

An intense vaso-vagal reaction characterizes those reflex cardiovascular syncopes in which the glossopharyngeal nerve constitutes the main afferent nerve pathway. In these syndromes, afferent fibres of the glossopharyngeal nerve project from the baroreceptorial area to the medullary cardiac and vasomotor centres, from which efferent fibres descend into the vagus. The most common reflex cardiovascular syndromes linked to the IX nerve are carotid sinus syndrome (CSS) and glossopharyngeal neuralgia-asystole syndrome (GNS). Eleven male patients (mean age 65.4 years) with recurrent and severe vaso-

Tooth pulp deafferentation is not associated with changes in primary afferent depolarization of facial afferent endings in the brain stem.

Previous studies have demonstrated that tooth pulp deafferentation is associated with statistically significant alterations in the low-threshold facial mechanoreceptive field properties of brain stem neurons in trigeminal (V) subnucleus oralis. A loss of spinal afferent-induced presynaptic inhibition as a consequence of a decrease in primary afferent depolarization (PAD) following spinal nerve deafferentation has been invoked as a mechanism underlying deafferentation-induced somatosensory neuroplasticity. Therefore, this study was initiated to determine if these pulp deafferentation-induced ne

Topographic distribution of the neurons of the central complex (centre médian-parafascicular complex) and of other thalamic neurons projecting to the striatum in macaques.

The distribution of the neurons of the central complex (or "centre médian-parafascicular complex") and of other thalamic regions projecting to the striatum was studied using a cartographic technique based on ventricular landmarks. The brain of a macaque was used as a reference for the cytoarchitectonic study of the complex. Three parts were isolated: the pars parafascicularis (or medial part), the pars media (or middle part) and the pars paralateralis (or lateral part). Wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase was stereotaxically injected into either the sensorimotor or the a

Effectiveness mechanism of chlomipramine by neurophysiological tests in subjects with true premature ejaculation.

The effectiveness mechanism of the chlomipramine treatment was evaluated by sacral evoked response (SER) and dorsal nerve somatosensory cortical evoked potential (DN-SEP) testings in 15 patients with true premature ejaculation (TPE). We couldn't demonstrate any significant difference between the values of either latency times or amplitudes of the evoked responses determined just before and at the end of the treatment with chlomipramine in these patients. However, the sensory thresholds were 24.4 +/- 4.3 V in the pretreatment term and 30.2 +/- 7.3 V at the end of the treatment. This difference

Influence of central respiratory activity on the cough response in anesthetized dogs.

Cough responses evoked by mechanical stimulation of the tracheobronchial mucosa in anesthetized and tracheostomized dogs were studied. The most common response was a group of coughs. Phase relationships between coughing and spontaneous respiration during the cough initiation and resolution periods were categorized as either synchronized or unsynchronized. We defined the synchronization as the coincidence of an expiratory thrust and the early-expiratory phase of respiration. During the cough initiation period, the incidence of synchronization increased as central respiratory activity was enhanc

Demarcations of the mechanosensory projection zones in the raccoon thalamus, shown by cytochrome oxidase, acetylcholinesterase, and Nissl stains.

To determine anatomically the boundaries and internal organization of the kinesthetic and cutaneous mechanosensory regions of the ventrobasal thalamus, alternate section series from electrophysiologically mapped tissues from 14 raccoons were stained for cytochrome oxidase, myelinated fibers, acetylcholinesterase, and Nissl substance. Microelectrode tracks, along with electrolytic lesions placed as tissue markers, reveal that the mechanoreceptor projection zones have higher cytochrome oxidase and lower acetylcholinesterase staining than some neighboring regions. Both these enzymatic stains reve

Afferent pupillary defect in pineal region tumour.

A patient is described in whom an afferent pupillary defect was an early sign of a tumour in the pineal region. It is suggested that this was due to involvement of the pupillary afferent fibres between the optic tract and pretectal nucleus contralateral to the affected pupil.

Accessory innervation of mandibular anterior teeth in cats: a horseradish peroxidase study.

In 10 cats, an ipsilateral section of the inferior alveolar nerve was performed following which horseradish peroxidase was deposited in cavity preparations of either ipsicentral incisors (8) or canines (2). The animals were sacrificed in 24 h, and the ipsilateral nerve to mylohyoid and both semilunar ganglia were prepared histochemically for observation. Labeled axons were found in 6 of 8 cats, whose incisors were prepared, and 4 of the 6 had labeled ganglion cells. In the two remaining cats with incisor preparations, no labeled ganglion cells were found; however, labeled axons were found in t

Responses of T2-T4 spinal neurons to stimulation of the greater splanchnic nerves of the cat.

Effects of electrical stimulation of the greater splanchnic nerves on T2-T4 spinal neurons were determined in 16 cats anesthetized with alpha-chloralose. Of 77 neurons responding to somatic stimuli, 65 (84%) were excited, inhibited, or both excited and inhibited by splanchnic input. Each of the splanchnic responsive cells also was responsive to electrical stimulation of cardiopulmonary sympathetic afferent fibers. All but one neuron with left splanchnic input also received input from the right splanchnic nerve. Short- and long-latency excitatory responses were observed after splanchnic stimula

Properties of central vestibular neurons fired by stimulation of the saccular nerve.

In 4 cats all vestibular afferents in one labyrinth except those innervating the saccular macula were transected and allowed to degenerate. 23--53 days after the initial surgery the central connections of the remaining saccular nerve were studied under chloralose anesthesia. Stimulation of the saccular nerve evoked N1 field potentials in the ipsilateral lateral and descending vestibular nuclei; little or no field potential activity was seen in the superior nucleus. The distribution of field potentials overlapped with that of neurons of origin of the vestibulospinal tracts. Forty-two neurons in

A neurophysiological theory for the pain mechanism of tic douloureux.

In attempting to understand the mechanism of pain production in tic douloureux, one must account for the myelination pathology seen in the primary afferent fibers, the cases where trigger is in a different division than the pain, the frequent lack of a fixed neurologic deficit, the effective trigger stimuli corresponding to large caliber axons which would not seem to involve the small axons usually associated with pain production, and similar puzzling features of the disease. We present a theory which satisfactorily predicts, or is consistent with, most known features of tic; it is based upon

Effects of metabolic inhibitors and ouabain on static afferent discharges from the isolated frog muscle spindle.

Effects of metabolic inhibitors and ouabain on the rate of afferent discharges from isolated muscle spindle of the bullfrog were examined in vitro to elucidate the mechanism for generating afferent action potentials. Dinitrophenol, NaCN, iodoacetic acid, and ouabain gradually reduced the rate of discharges. These drugs were without direct effect on the nerve axon. The rate of discharges was also reduced by Li+, which is known to be minimally extruded from the interior of cells by an active transport mechanism. The rate of discharges remained approximately 50% in the presence of NaCN or in the

FGF21 ameliorates the neurocontrol of blood pressure in the high fructose-drinking rats.

Fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF21) is closely related to various metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. However, the direct targets and mechanisms linking FGF21 to blood pressure control and hypertension are still elusive. Here we demonstrated a novel regulatory function of FGF21 in the baroreflex afferent pathway (the nucleus tractus solitarii, NTS; nodose ganglion, NG). As the critical co-receptor of FGF21, β-klotho (klb) significantly expressed on the NTS and NG. Furthermore, we evaluated the beneficial effects of chronic intraperitoneal infusion of recombinant human FGF21 (rhFGF21) on th

The vasovagal response.

The vasovagal response is the development of inappropriate cardiac slowing and arteriolar dilatation. Vasovagal responses reflect autonomic neural changes: bradycardia results from sudden augmentation of efferent vagal activity, and hypotension results from sudden reduction or cessation of sympathetic activity and relaxation of arterial resistance vessels. Two different neural pathways are thought to be involved, one originating in the hypothalamus, the other in the heart. Direct hypothalamic activation of the medullary cardiovascular centres triggered by emotional stress or pain causes a vaso

Autonomic dysreflexia presenting as a severe headache.

Hypertension, bradycardia, and severe headache have been associated with autonomic dysreflexia. Autonomic dysreflexia affects those with spinal transection above the level of T6 after plastic changes of the afferent pathways. This restructuring in the presence of noxious stimuli below the level of the lesion leads to autonomic dysreflexia. The onset of the first episode of autonomic dysreflexia has been documented as soon as 30 days and as late as 13 years after the injury. This report presents a case study of a paraplegic man 8 years after injury with autonomic dysreflexia associated with a u…

Functional dyspepsia: New insights into the pathophysiology.

The pathogenesis of functional dyspepsia remains poorly understood. There is increasing evidence pointing to a predominant role of gastroduodenal visceral hypersensitivity in the pathogenesis, where patients have abnormally reduced gastric and small intestinal sensory thresholds. Motor abnormalities observed in subgroups of patients include delayed gastric emptying, antral hypomotility, gastric dysrhythmias, abnormal gastrointestinal reflexes and small intestinal dysmotility, but these may be secondary pheno nena. The central nervous system modifies peripheral visceral afferent pathways and, h…
