[Resumption of enteral nutrition using enteral formula containing sodium alginate following hemorrhaging after endoscopic sphincterotomy: a case report].

Enteral nutrition is often performed in elderly patients with dysphagia. Choledocholithiasis is a disease that is common in elderly patients. Gastrointestinal hemorrhaging can occur in association with endoscopic sphincterotomy, and subsequent enteral nutrition must be carefully resumed. We herein report our experience using Mermed Plus containing sodium alginate after endoscopic hemostasis. The patient was an 88-year-old woman with an onset of gallstone cholangitis during rehabilitation after cerebral infarction. On day 2, endoscopic sphincterotomy and biliary drainage were performed, and the

Randomised clinical trial: addition of alginate-antacid (Gaviscon Double Action) to proton pump inhibitor therapy in patients with breakthrough symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic breakthrough in proton pump inhibitor (PPI)-treated gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients is a common problem with a range of underlying causes. The nonsystemic, raft-forming action of alginates may help resolve symptoms. AIM: To assess alginate-antacid (Gaviscon Double Action, RB, Slough, UK) as add-on therapy to once-daily PPI for suppression of breakthrough reflux symptoms. METHODS: In two randomised, double-blind studies (exploratory, n=52; confirmatory, n=262), patients taking standard-dose PPI who had breakthrough symptoms, assessed by Heartburn Refl…

Pretreatment with propylene glycol alginate sodium sulfate ameliorated concanavalin A-induced liver injury by regulating the PI3K/Akt pathway in mice.

AIMS: Propylene glycol alginate sodium sulfate (PSS), a sulfated polysaccharide possesses anti-inflammatory effects. Here, we investigated the effect of PSS on concanavalin A (Con A)-induced liver injury in mice and examined the underlying mechanisms. MAIN METHODS: Balb/C mice were injected intravenously with Con A (25mg/kg) to generate a model of acute liver injury. PSS (25 or 50mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally 1h before the Con A administration. The levels of serum liver enzymes, inflammatory cytokines, and other marker proteins were determined, and liver injury was assessed histopatho

A Retrospective Study of Pilonidal Sinus Healing by Secondary Intention Using Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Versus Alginate or Gauze Dressings.

Pilonidal sinus (PS) disease is an inflammatory skin and subcutaneous tissue condition that presents with infection, acute abscess, chronic discharging wounds, and/or pain. Surgery with open healing by secondary intention typically is used to achieve the fastest healing time with minimal recurrence rates. A retrospective analysis was conducted of data extracted from the medical records of 73 consecutive patients who had symptomatic natal cleft PS over a 10-year period to compare use of NPWT to alginate-based/gauze daily dressing (DD) changes in terms of healing time and recurrence. Variables e

Enhanced control of in vivo bone formation with surface functionalized alginate microbeads incorporating heparin and human bone morphogenetic protein-2.

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that a surface functionalization delivery platform incorporating heparin onto strontium alginate microbeads surfaces would convert this "naive carriers" into "mini-reservoirs" for localized in vivo delivery of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) that will induce functional bone regeneration. In vitro evaluation confirmed that (1) heparin incorporation could immobilize and prolong rhBMP-2 release for approximately 3 weeks; (2) a significant decrease (p<0.01) in rhBMP-2 burst release is attainable depending on initial protein load; and

Integration of a novel injectable nano calcium sulfate/alginate scaffold and BMP2 gene-modified mesenchymal stem cells for bone regeneration.

The repair of craniofacial bone defects is surgically challenging due to the complex anatomical structure of the craniofacial skeleton. Current strategies for bone tissue engineering using a preformed scaffold have not resulted in the expected clinical regeneration due to difficulty in seeding cells into the deep internal space of scaffold, and the inability to inject them in minimally invasive surgeries. In this study, we used the osteoconductive and mechanical properties of nano-scale calcium sulfate (nCS) and the biocompatibility of alginate to develop the injectable nCS/alginate (nCS/A) pa

An alginate-antacid formulation (Gaviscon Double Action Liquid) can eliminate or displace the postprandial 'acid pocket' in symptomatic GERD patients.

BACKGROUND: Recently, an 'acid pocket' has been described in the proximal stomach, particularly evident postprandially in GERD patients, when heartburn is common. By creating a low density gel 'raft' that floats on top of gastric contents, alginate-antacid formulations may neutralise the 'acid pocket'. AIM: To assess the ability of a commercial high-concentration alginate-antacid formulation to neutralize and/or displace the acid pocket in GERD patients. METHODS: The 'acid pocket' was studied in ten symptomatic GERD patients. Measurements were made using concurrent stepwise pH pull-throughs,

Rapid onset of effect of sodium alginate on gastro-oesophageal reflux compared with ranitidine and omeprazole, and relationship between symptoms and reflux episodes.

The objective of the open, randomised, four-period crossover study was to compare the time of onset of effect of sodium alginate (SA), omeprazole, ranitidine and control, based on oesophageal and intragastric pH and to determine any correlation between reflux symptoms and episodes in volunteers suffering from occasional gastro-oesophageal reflux. SA showed extensive prevention of acid exposure in the oesophagus compared with other treatments during the first hour. Overall, SA was more effective than control or omeprazole and comparable with ranitidine. There was little evidence of association

Alginate microcapsules for pancreatic islet cell graft immunoprotection: struggle and progress towards the final cure for type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Lights and shadows have been associated with the use of alginate/polyaminoacidic microcapsules for transplantation of pancreatic islet cells for the therapy of diabetes mellitus, with no recipient pharmacological immunosuppression. In fact, preliminary success in rodents has generally not matched the results achieved in diabetic higher mammals. The restricted availability of cadaveric human donor organs/tissue, coupled to regulatory hurdles in the use of microcapsules in patients, has significantly delayed the progress of microencapsulated islet grafts into pilot clinical trials. While the bas

Adhesive retention dressings are more comfortable than alginate dressings on split skin graft donor sites--a randomised controlled trial.

A prospective randomised trial examining the effectiveness, comparative comfort and ease of care of two different split skin graft donor site dressings was performed. One of the dressings was an alginate (Kaltostat), and the other an adhesive retention tape (Mefix). Alginates are the standard plastic surgical dressing, whereas the use of adhesive retention tapes as a donor site dressing presents a novel use of a readily available product. A total of 30 consecutive patients requiring split skin grafts were randomised to receive either alginate or retention donor site dressings. Dressings were a…

Global Transcriptomic Analysis of Topical Sodium Alginate Protection against Peptic Damage in an In Vitro Model of Treatment-Resistant Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

Breakthrough symptoms are thought to occur in roughly half of all gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients despite maximal acid suppression (proton pump inhibitor, PPI) therapy. Topical alginates have recently been shown to enhance mucosal defense against acid-pepsin insult during GERD. We aimed to examine potential alginate protection of transcriptomic changes in a cell culture model of PPI-recalcitrant GERD. Immortalized normal-derived human esophageal epithelial cells underwent pretreatment with commercial alginate-based anti-reflux medications (Gaviscon Advance or Gaviscon Double Ac…

Spatially core-shell mussel inspired alginate hydrogel enabling adhesive outer layers and a reinforced inner network for intelligent pressure detection.

Inspired by the functional partitioning of biological interfaces, we report a core-shell-structured adhesive hydrogel (SA-Dopa hydrogel) that spatially decouples interfacial adhesion from bulk mechanical reinforcement for wearable sensing applications. Conventional one-pot adhesive hydrogels generally distribute adhesive moieties throughout the entire network, leading to coupled surface/bulk functions and inefficient use of interfacial binding groups. In this design, a Ca2+-coordinated sodium alginate inner network serves as a mechanically robust load-bearing framework, while a catechol-rich o

Sodium Alginate Modification as a Promising Strategy for Inducing Oral Immune Tolerance to Fish Gelatin-Based Cell Scaffolds to Control Allergenic Risks.

The allergenic risks of fish gelatin-based cell scaffolds remain an unresolved issue. The study proposed a sodium alginate modification strategy to solve allergenic risks by inducing oral immune tolerance. The strategy significantly reduced antibody production, mast cell degranulation, inflammatory mediator release, and Th2 immune response. Peptidomics and bioinformatics prediction revealed that the strategy protected CD4+ T cell epitopes (FTGASGLPG) and CD8+ T cell epitopes (e.g., GATGPTGL). Additionally, intestinal barrier function, integrity, and Th1/Th2/Th17/Treg immune balance were restor

Fabrication and characterization of chitosan/sodium alginate/gellan gum hydrogels containing black bean anthocyanins as colorimetric indicators for beef freshness monitoring.

Fresh beef is highly susceptible to quality deterioration during storage and distribution, necessitating reliable and rapid freshness indicators. In this study, a pH-responsive colorimetric chitosan-based hydrogel was developed for visual monitoring of beef freshness using anthocyanins extracted from black bean seed coats. Anthocyanins were obtained via ultrasonic extraction and stabilized with sodium chloride (NaCl, 0.1 M). The hydrogel was fabricated through physical cross-linking of chitosan, sodium alginate, and low-acyl gellan gum with 40 mg anthocyanin-enriched extract (ACNS). The CS-SA-
