Anesthesic management for escobar syndrome: case report.

Escobar syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder which is characterized by growth retardation, axillary, antecubital, popliteal digital, and intercrural joint flexion contracture, pterygium in the eyes, cleft palate, decreased lung capacity, genital abnormalities, and spinal deformity. In this case, we presented the anesthesic management of a 2-year-old child undergoing frontal sling operation for ptosis and amblyopia etiology exploration.

Photorefractive keratectomy in pediatric patients.

This article reports the results of photorefractive keratectomy in nine patients between 10 and 15 years of age who were treated for the following refractive errors: unilateral myopia, post intraocular lens myopia, and unequal hypermetropia with amblyopia. Visual acuity improved and spectacle correction decreased in all patients. There was significant visual improvement with pleoptic treatment in one amblyopic hypermetropic patient.

Intraocular lens implantation in unilateral congenital cataract: a preliminary report.

We performed pars plana lensectomy with secondary anterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in 32 cases of unilateral congenital cataract with otherwise normal appearing eyes. Five of the 12 patients old enough to respond achieved a visual acuity of 20/60 or better with evidence of fusion. We advocate operating within the first few months of life to lessen amblyopia.

Simple surgical approach for treatment of ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum: A case report.

Ankyloblepharon flliforme adnatum (AFA) is a rare congenital abnormality of the eyelids. Upper and lower eyelids are joined by single or multiple bands. It is usually isolated but can be associated with ophtalmic and systemic diseases. AFA is potentially amblyopic condition. Treatment is quick, safe, and minimizes the risk of amblyopia. We report a case of newborn with isolated AFA at birth, treated by surgical excision of the band tissue.

After-image transfer--evaluation of short-term treatment.

The records of treatment by the after-image transfer method of 21 children, mainly with strabismus amblyopia, were examined to evaluate the acuity improvement in the short term. There was no significant improvement in 15 cases. In several other patients, an immediate response to the after-image method occurred, but these patients' binocular vision and acuity had deteriorated following previous improvement achieved by other orthoptic methods.

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous: roto-extraction and other surgical experience.

We discuss nine cases of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous seen recently, including mode of presentation, management and postsurgical follow-up. Emphasis is placed on early operative intervention in order to preserve the globe, as well as to prevent irremedial stimulus deprivation amblyopia. The advantages of roto-extraction in the surgical approach to this entity are considered, and the difficulties of postoperative visual rehabilitation are also discussed.

Ocular growth and morbidity in preterm children without retinopathy of prematurity.

PURPOSE: To investigate ocular growth and morbidity in both preschool and school-aged children born prematurely without retinopathy of prema … ematurity and visual acuity or refractive state. Two (7.7%) subjects had strabismus, two (7.7%) had amblyopia, and four (15%) had anisometropia. Total axial length was significantly correlated with both gestational age at birth (r=0.822, P<0.001) and birth weight (r=0.569, P=0.003). Similarly, vitreous length was also significantly correlated with gestation …

Flash Suppression Reveals an Additional Nonvisual Extrastriate Contribution for Amblyopic Suppression.

PURPOSE: A growing body of evidence suggests that anomalous binocular interactions underlie the deficits in amblyopia, but their nature and neural basis are still not fully understood. METHODS: We examined the behavioral and neural correlates of interocular suppression in 13 adult amblyopes and 13 matched controls using a flash suppression paradigm while recording steady-state visual evoked potentials. The strength of suppression was manipulated by changing the contrast (10%, 20%, 30%, or 100%) of the flash stimulus, or the suppressor, presented either in the dominant (fellow) or nondominant …

The greatest improvement (5 lines crowding acuity) was seen in a 9-year-old with recent onset amblyopia due to corneal scarring. Two patients aged 6 years with deprivation amblyopia following surgery of a congenital cataract and one 5-year-old with retinitis pigmentosa did not benefit from BT. CONCLUSIONS: BT is a cheap noninvasive method that may he …

Dynamic retinoscopy.

Dynamic retinoscopy for the objective examination of accommodation was described in the ophthalmic literature in the 1890s but is rarely used in ophthalmology today. The technique has been extensively investigated by the optometric profession, however, sometimes with confusing, and sometimes with useful, results. It can be of value in screening infants for astigmatism and anisometropia, in detecting incomplete cycloplegia, in detecting abnormalities of accommodation, and probably in determining the treatment strategy for eyes with amblyopia and deficient accommodation.

Bilateral central scotomata due to intracranial tumour.

Bilateral centrocaecal scotomata have been recognised as a sign of intrinsic optic nerve disease, usually associated with hereditary optic neuropathy, and nutritional or toxic amblyopias. This report describes four patients with central scotomata due to intracranial masses, three of whom recovered after surgical intervention. The clinician should be alerted to the association in patients with headaches, other neurological signs, and central visual loss.

Toxicological and clinical aspects of cyanide metabolism.

This contribution deals with the occurrence of cyanide and its biological pathways in the body. Especially possibilities of detoxification are pointed out. Intoxications are caused by acute and chronical cyanide uptake. Tobacco amblyopia, retrobulbar neuritis in pernicious anaemia, Leber's optic atrophy, Nigerian nutritional neuropathy, and sterility in female heavy smokers are attributed to cyanide intoxication. Various methods for treating acute and chronic cyanide intoxication are discussed.

Hyperopic anisometropia with a shorter axial length ipsilateral to the ptotic eye in children with congenital ptosis.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the clinical characteristics of children with congenital ptosis, with particular attention given to the incidence of anisometropia, and the difference in axial length (AL) between the right and left eyes. METHODS: The medical charts of 55 patients with congenital ptosis at Niigata University Medical and Dental Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical characteristics, including age, cycloplegic refraction, AL, and the presence of amblyopia and its causes were analyzed. RESULTS: Age at the initial visit was 16 ± 20 (mean ± standard deviation, the same applies…
