Occurrences of gastrointestinal parasites were assessed in fecal samples from 3,099 dogs in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, SP, that were treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of São Paulo Veterinary School. The samples were analyzed using the flotation and centrifugal sedimentation methods. The results were compared with those from previous studies (at different times). The frequency of each parasite was correlated with the dogs' ages, breeds and gender, as well as the occurrences of diarrhea and the use of anthelmintics, by means of the chi-square or Fisher exact test. P…

The larvicidal effects of 11 anthelmintics, 7 pesticides and 4 disinfectants were evaluated with infective larvae of Strongyloides papillosus (SPL) and Strongyloides venezuelensis (SVZ). The lethal concentrations against SPL and SVZ were found to be similar. Three chemicals (dichlorvos, levamisole and trichlorfon) showed highest larvicidal effects. The 50% lethal concentration (LC(50)) values for the three compounds against SPL larvae were 0.08, 0.24, and 0.59 ppm, respectively.

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections impact small ruminant health, welfare, and production across farming systems. Rising anthelmintic resistance and regulation of synthetic drug use in organic farming is driving research and development of sustainable alternatives for GIN control. One alternative is the feeding of plants that contain secondary metabolites (PSMs) e.g., proanthocyanidins (PA, syn. condensed tannins) that have shown anthelmintic potential. However, PSMs can potentially impair performance, arising from reduced palatability and thus intake, digestibility or even toxicity eff

The patient, a middle-aged male with a long history of the disease, had experienced recurrent headaches for 26 years and episodic shaking of the right limb with slurred speech for the past month. He was previously diagnosed with cerebral cysticercosis and had shown improvement after anthelmintic treatment. In recent years, he noted a resurgence of headaches. One month prior, he developed right limb shaking and occasional slurred speech. A clinical neurological examination was unremarkable, but cranial MRI and cerebrospinal fluid sequencing confirmed a diagnosis of cerebral cysticercosis. Anthe

Livestock movement facilitates translocation of anthelmintic resistant parasites, but the extent to which resistance emergence depends on animal movement is still poorly understood. Benzimidazole resistance is widespread in ovine trichostrongylid nematodes, and our understanding of its molecular basis now allows for molecular epidemiology investigations. This study applies deep amplicon sequencing of the isotype-1 β-tubulin locus to compare the prevalence and frequency of benzimidazole resistance Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), and their alleles, for trichostrongylid populations from 1

BACKGROUND: Selective anthelmintic treatment, advocated due to evolving anthelmintic resistance, has been associated with an increase in Strongylus vulgaris prevalence. Reverting to routine interval anthelmintic treatments is not viable and therefore, identifying other management factors correlated with S. vulgaris infection is vital.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate possible risk factors associated with the presence of S. vulgaris infection in resident horses on Swedish horse establishments.
STUDY DESIGN: Internet-based questionnaire survey.
METHODS: A questionnaire, created using the internet-b

To determine whether it is economically advantageous to treat calves having inapparent parasitism, we conducted experiments from 1971 to 197 … corresponding controls had neutralized earlier advantages. The comparative influence of the various anthelmintics was not consistent from year to year. When total cost/kilogram gain was calculated from feed efficiency measuremnts and other costs, economic treatment advantage was evident in seven of 11 tests (7 of 10 treatment groups) from 1973 through 1976. Anthelmintic resistance has prompted the search for alternative control strategies, such as the use of plant-derived compounds and biological control with nematophagous fungi. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro anthelmintic effect of linalool and its association with the fungus Arthrobotrys cladodes on gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. The larvicidal activity of linalool, alone and in combination with A. cladodes conidia, was assessed using the Larval Motility Inhibition Test (LMIT) on infective larvae (L3). Ten (10) experimental groups were designed, each with eight

Horses remain globally at constant risk of strongylid infections, with cyathostomins being particularly prevalent and abundant. It is essential to routinely monitor the efficacy of anthelmintics against equine nematodes. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin against equine strongyles and estimate the strongyle egg reappearance period (ERP) following ivermectin treatment for the first time in Hungary. Fecal samples were collected from 57 Thoroughbred mares before treatment and at 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 weeks post-treatment at a Hungarian National Stud Farm. Fecal egg counts (FECs) …

Parasitic gastrointestinal nematodes pose significant health risks to humans, livestock, and companion animals, and their control relies heavily on the use of anthelmintic drugs. Overuse of these drugs has led to the emergence of resistant nematode populations. Herein, a naturally occurring isolate (referred to as BCR) of the dog hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum, that is resistant to 3 major classes of anthelmintics is characterized. Various drug assays were used to determine the resistance of BCR to thiabendazole, ivermectin, moxidectin and pyrantel pamoate. When compared to a drug-susceptible i…

Haemonchus contortus is a highly pathogenic and prevalent helminth that causes many deaths in sheep herds. Anthelmintics are usually employed to overcome this issue; however, they do not guarantee immediate and lasting efficacy because of the occurrence of drug-resistant parasites. Among substances that are used in scientific studies for parasitic control, essential oils are known to have different pharmacological properties. However, they demonstrate instability owing to several factors, and therefore, nanoemulsification is considered an alternative to control the instability and degradabilit…

Due to widespread drug resistance in parasitic nematodes, there is a need to develop new anthelmintics. Given the cost and time involved in developing a new drug, the repurposing of known chemicals can be a promising, alternative approach. In this context, we tested a library (n = 600) of natural product-inspired pesticide analogues against exsheathed third stage-larvae (xL3s) of Haemonchus contortus (barber's pole worm) using a whole-organism, phenotypic screening technique that measures the inhibition of motility and development in treated larvae. In the primary screen, we identified 32 acti…

Parasitic nematodes pose a serious threat to agriculture, livestock, and human health. Increasing resistance to antiparasitic agents underscores the need to replenish our anthelmintic arsenal. The nonpathogenic Caenorhabditis elegans, which serves as an effective model of parasitic helminths, has been used to search for new anthelmintic leads. We previously reported small-molecule inhibitors of the essential C. elegans protein UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM or Glf). This enzyme is required for the generation of galactofuranose (Galf)-containing glycans and is needed in nematodes for proper cu

INTRODUCTION: Visceral larva migrans is a syndrome caused by an infection with larval helminths, which may result in partial or general pathological changes in host tissues. Due to the difficulty in finding the causative parasites, the diagnosis of visceral larva migrans is generally based on compatible clinical signs, epidemic history, marked eosinophilia and pathological examination, especially positive serological test results and the disappearance of symptoms after specific treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report here the case of a 21-year-old Chinese man who, having ingested living earth

Horses worldwide are exposed to a complex mixture of intestinal parasitic helminths. When burdens are high, these parasites can seriously compromise health and welfare. Some helminth species have an extremely high prevalence and are difficult to control, not least because there is a limited understanding of their most basic biology. Furthermore, levels of resistance to some of the commonly used anthelmintics are widespread and increasing. The cyathostomins are the most common nematode species affecting equids worldwide. Within this group of parasites are more than 50 different species. Until r…

Sheep meat production in France is characterized by large flocks and a limited supply of labour. Digestive-tract strongyles are considered as one of the main health problems and control relies mostly on the use of anthelminthics, although resistance to at least the benzimidazoles is increasing. We conducted interviews on nine conventional and seven organic farms regarding whether an anthelmintic targeted selective treatment program could fit within the operations of the farms. In addition, necropsies of lambs were performed on three organic farms, and faecal egg counts and small lungworm count

The oral bioavailability and anthelmintic efficacy in mice of a new formulation of albendazole (ABZ) dissolved in a solution of hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD) are compared with a conventional ABZ suspension of carboxymethylcellulose. Plasma concentrations of ABZ and albendazole sulphoxide (ABZ-SO), its active and main metabolite, were assayed by HPLC. The AUC(0- infinity ) and C(max) values obtained for both ABZ and ABZ-SO, after administration of the ABZ-HPCD solution were significantly higher (P<0.01) than those obtained from the ABZ suspension. Although, the differences between the

A novel laboratory anticestode assay was developed using Hymenolepis diminuta in the hamster. The commercial anticestode compounds, praziquantel, bunamidine, and niclosamide were active against patent infections of Hymenolepis diminuta in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) when given orally at 3.125, 100, and 200 mg/kg, respectively. The gastrointestinal nematode anthelmintics, cambendazole and mebendazole, were active at 50 mg/kg. Rafoxanide (fasciolicide) was active at 25 mg/kg, the lowest level tested. The coccidiostat, nicarbazin, was active at experimental levels (800 mg/kg and up). T…

Tetrachlorvinphos was evaluated for anthelmintic efficacy as a feed additive against gastrointestinal nematodes of cattle. Tetrachlorvinphos was added to the mineral mixture of medicated cattle (n = 13) at the rate of 1.6 mg/day/kg of body weight for a 29-week period beginning May 2, 1975. Data suggest that the level of parasitism, as estimated by the number of nematode eggs per gram of feces, was not reduced by the addition of tetrachlorvinphos to the mineral mixture of medicated cattle. Results obtained from identification and quantification of nematodes recovered at necropsy from 6 medicate
