Weed adaptability to environmental conditions poses a major challenge in agricultural production, often leading to yield reduction or even complete crop loss. Effective weed detection requires algorithms tailored to the unique visual and biological characteristics of each crop. However, despite the agricultural importance of garlic, no studies have developed optimized state-of-the-art deep learning models for weed identification in garlic fields. Addressing this gap, the present study focuses on optimizing two prominent object detection frameworks-YOLOv5 and YOLOv8-for accurate weed detection

As transistor scaling approaches physical and economic limits, advanced packaging has become an important approach to continued system scaling. This review compares two-dimensional (2D), two- and-a-half-dimensional (2.5D), and three-dimensional (3D) integration technologies, including silicon interposers, localized silicon bridges, redistribution layer (RDL) fan-out platforms, and vertical die stacking. The comparison focuses on interconnect geometry, bandwidth, energy efficiency, thermal and mechanical constraints, manufacturing maturity, cost, and major failure mechanisms. Representative app

Phosphate anions play key roles in biology, chemistry, the environment, and are important industrial raw materials. However, their recognition, binding, and sensing in water are complicated by their structural diversity, multiple protonation states, and strong hydration. Well-pre-organized macrocyclic receptors are used to increase selectivity and affinity by reducing the entropy associated with the adaptation of the receptor to the phosphate guests. However, the synthesis and purification of macrocyclic sensors is difficult, marred by low yields. Linear (non-macrocyclic) receptors and sensors

Although unfractionated heparin (UFH) remains a vital agent for rapid anticoagulation, its reliance on animal-derived sources results in batch-to-batch variability and contamination risks, and its clinical application is further restricted by the possibility of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Dendritic polyglycerol sulfates were investigated as heparin analogues in 2004 due to their ability to mimic its charge, which is essential for its acting mechanism, and revealed an anticoagulant activity of 15-35% compared to UFH. In the current study, we found that the anticoagulant effect of polyglyc

Nucleosome assembly protein 1 (NAP1) is highly conserved across eukaryotes, yet its biochemical function, particularly its proposed role as a histone chaperone, remains unresolved. Dinoflagellates, including Karenia brevis (Kb) and Crypthecodinium cohnii (Cc), lack architectural nucleosomes and express core histones at unusually low levels, yet retain abundant NAP1 transcripts encoding two to three distinct homologs. Confocal immunolocalization of K. brevis showed strong nuclear signals for both homologs, between chromosomes and at the nucleolus, with higher nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratios in G2

Polyphosphate (polyP) is a conserved inorganic polymer traditionally viewed as a stress-induced phosphate and energy reserve. In cyanobacteria, however, polyP granules are constitutively present and are frequently observed in close proximity to carboxysomes, the bacterial microcompartments that mediate CO2 fixation. Here, we show that polyP functions as a spatially organized regulator of the photosynthetic cytoplasm in Synechococcus elongatus. PolyP granules localize to the nucleoid and are periodically arranged along the cell axis, independent of the McdAB carboxysome positioning system. Desp

OBJECTIVES: Understanding the architectural diversity of primate musculature is essential for interpreting locomotor function and reconstructing evolutionary adaptations. This study examines whether interspecific differences in pelvic and hind limb muscle architecture reflect functional differentiation among major muscle groups.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present detailed dissection data from six primate species, alongside a large sample of additional specimens collected from previous studies. We quantify fascicle length, pennation angle, muscle mass, and physiological cross-sectional area acr…

Alkynes are indispensable molecular motifs in organic, materials, medicinal, and pharmaceutical chemistry, owing to their linear geometry, structural rigidity, distinctive reactivity, and widespread occurrence in bioactive molecules and bioorthogonal platforms. Conventional alkyne synthesis, such as Sonogashira and Glaser couplings, and metal acetylide-based methods, often require harsh conditions such as toxic metal catalysts, strong bases/oxidants, and elevated temperatures, while classical radical approaches typically rely on high-energy UV irradiation, leading to poor selectivity and limit

Introduction Accurate cardiac image segmentation is essential for quantitative assessment of cardiac anatomy and function. Manual segmentation, while considered the reference standard, is time-consuming and subject to inter- and intra-observer variability. Deep learning (DL) models, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have shown promise for automating this process. Among these, U-Net and DeepLabV3 are widely used architectures; however, direct comparisons between them for cardiac silhouette segmentation on cardiac catheterization radiographs are limited. Methods A supervised DL …

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified hundreds of significant loci for psychiatric disorders, yet the strength of these associations remains modest compared to other human complex traits with similar numbers of hits. Whether this pattern reflects statistical artifacts or real biological differences-and, if the latter, what underlies it-remains unclear. In addition to psychiatric disorders, we find that other traits with functional enrichment in the central nervous system (CNS), whether binary or quantitative, also share similar genetic architectures, characterized by GWAS hits…

PURPOSE: Our objective was to explore the shared genetic risks between iridocyclitis and extraocular autoimmune diseases, as well as refine the regulatory network of genetic and environmental mechanisms by incorporating endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs).
METHODS: Using summary statistics reporting genome-wide association study findings within European ancestry, we first investigated the genetic associations between iridocyclitis and extraocular autoimmune diseases. We then performed causal inference using Mendelian randomization (MR). By integrating genetic and causal associations, we exp

The invasive urban malaria vector Anopheles stephensi threatens 126 million city dwellers in Africa. Controlling An. stephensi requires greater understanding of its origin, invasion dynamics, and insecticide resistance mechanisms. Analysis of 645 whole genomes sampled across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia supports an invasion scenario in which an initial South Asian introduction established a bridgehead population in Djibouti, which seeded distinct invasion fronts in Sudan, Ethiopia/Kenya, and Yemen. These incursions show contrasting rates and routes of spread shaped by landscape topology.

BACKGROUND: The architecture of bone substitute scaffolds-particularly pore size and organization-plays a crucial role in orchestrating immune responses, osteogenesis and angiogenesis. Yet, the mechanisms linking scaffold design to the temporal dynamics of bone regeneration remain partially understood. To address this, we established a refined in vivo model that integrates histological, molecular, and immunological analyses from a single explant, enabling spatially resolved insight into the bone healing process and dynamics.
METHODS: Using a dynamic rabbit calvarial model, we investigated 3D-…

The genetics of multiple sclerosis (MS) has advanced dramatically through the combined impact of high-throughput genotyping, large biobank resources, worldwide collaborations, and powerful computational analyses. Over the past two decades, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have significantly reshaped our understanding of the genetic architecture of complex multifactorial diseases such as MS. The number of MS susceptibility-associated genomic regions is now more than 200, underscoring its highly polygenic nature. Within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), the HLA-DRB1*15:01 allele …

Genetics is transforming medicine, providing the possibility of highly specific diagnoses, which in turn allow molecularly defined cohort studies that facilitate detailed insights into gene-specific or even variant-specific prognosis and treatments. Yet, our understanding of genetic variation is changing. Previously, genetic testing typically resulted in a binary result, where an underlying genetic cause was either identified or not. With the increasing availability of population genomic data, a more nuanced view is emerging. Many disease-associated variants can also be identified in the unaff

The genome stores and processes approximately 1.5 gigabytes of encoded information. In this article, we propose that the eukaryotic genome and its adaptable three-dimensional packing in the form of chromatin offer a valuable template for the system architecture of DNA-based digital computers. We examine embryonic and stem cells, which exhibit distinct chromatin-associated condensates enriched in transcription machinery. These dynamic biomolecular condensates facilitate the spatial association of genes, genomic control elements, and molecular machinery responsible for reading the genomic code. …
