Scanning electron microscopy has been used to examine the changes in the basement membrane structure induced by polymorphonuclear leukocytes during leukodiapedesis. A diapedesis model based on a Boyden chamber fitted with a human amnion membrane simulated inflammatory processes during which leukocytes are stimulated to leave blood vessels and to penetrate basement membranes. A 29-year-old female patient with an autoimmune subepidermal blistering disease had linear deposits of both IgA and IgG at the basement membrane zone. Pulmonary hemorrhage is a rare and often fatal manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and enters the differential diagnosis of diffuse lung disease in patients with SLE. Pulmonary hemorrhage results from deposit of immune complexes in the alveolar basement membrane, which in turn damages capillary endothelium. Similar immune-complex deposition is present in the glomerular basement membrane of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and pulmonary hemorrhage.

IgG and C3 deposits were observed in the basement membrane zone in a case with herpes gestationis. In addition, circulating IgG anti-basement membrane antibodies were found. Electron microscopic immunocytochemical investigations, performed with a peroxidase-antiperoxidase sandwich technique, revealed the in vivo-bound IgG to be localized at the epidermal basal lamina and to exhibit a distribution pattern which is identical to that reported for bullous pemphigoid.

We examined the effects of methylprednisolone (MPSL) on type IV collagen, laminin and heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) mRNA levels in the renal glomeruli and medulla of puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN) nephrosis. mRNA levels encoding for type IV collagen and laminin increased markedly, whereas those for HSPG decreased significantly in glomeruli of PAN nephrosis.
