Comparative acoustic performance and mechanical properties of silk membranes for the repair of chronic tympanic membrane perforations.

The acoustic and mechanical properties of silk membranes of different thicknesses were tested to determine their suitability as a repair material for tympanic membrane perforations. Membranes of different thickness (10-100μm) were tested to determine their frequency response and their resistance to pressure loads in a simulated ear canal model. Their mechanical rigidity to pressure loads was confirmed by tensile testing. These membranes were tested alongside animal cartilage, currently the strongest available myringoplasty graft as well as paper, which is commonly used for simpler procedures.

Need for In Vivo Triggering of Homeostasis to Repair Irreversible Tissue Degeneration by Stem Cells through Innate and Invasive Regeneration Processes.

The regeneration patterns are innate, inherited and evolutionarily conserved mechanisms. In every individual there are certain cells and signaling networks which work together to proliferate the desired tissue lineages to replace the dead, lost and injured counter parts. This homeostasis mechanism keeps functioning of the organ system intact. There are some tissues such as skin, gut, blood, respiratory tract, uterine endometrium, testis must perpetually renew the majority of cells. As the aging advances the turnover potentials decreases under normal circumstances, some of these respond ineffic

Bioactivity response of Ta1-xOx coatings deposited by reactive DC magnetron sputtering.

The use of dental implants is sometimes accompanied by failure due to periimplantitis disease and subsequently poor esthetics when soft-hard tissue margin recedes. As a consequence, further research is needed for developing new bioactive surfaces able to enhance the osseous growth. Tantalum (Ta) is a promising material for dental implants since, comparing with titanium (Ti), it is bioactive and has an interesting chemistry which promotes the osseointegration. Another promising approach for implantology is the development of implants with oxidized surfaces since bone progenitor cells interact w

Recent advances in polymer drug conjugates.

Polymer drug conjugates play an important role in the delivery of drugs. In the polymeric drug conjugates, the bioactive agent is combined covalently with polymer to achieve the efficient delivery of bioactive agents in the required or specific period of time along with the enhancement of permeability and retention time. A large number of biodegradable polymers have been widely used in the area of biomedical science. Among them, polyphosphazene, is a biodegradable polymer having versatile nature because of its two chlorine atoms attached on both sides of phosphorus atom of its polymeric backbo

Role of biomaterials in prevention of in-stent restenosis.

Coronary balloon angioplasty and coronary stenting are the procedures used in healing coronary artery disease. However, injury of arteries during angioplasty and stenting causes cell stimulations in tissue. Cell movement and thrombosis lead to re-narrowing of widened vessel called restenosis. Several new types of carriers and technology have been developed to suppress and/or prevent restenosis. Authors review the polymeric materials featured in drug/gene carrier systems, nanovehicles, and stent coating materials against restenosis.

Preliminary exploration of the development of a collagenous artificial dura mater for sustained antibiotic release.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial infection is one of the most common complications of open craniocerebral injury and of conventional craniotomy in neurosurgery. The presence of blood-brain barrier leads to lower drug concentrations in the cerebrospinal fluid than in the venous blood. Increasing the intravenous dosage or frequency carries the risk of systemic adverse reactions or infections in other parts of the body. Developing an artificial dura mater (ADM) for sustained antibiotic release for use during neurosurgery can solve the problems perfectly. METHODS: Three types of drug-loaded ADMs made of

Nanoscale contact mechanics of biocompatible polyzwitterionic brushes.

Friction force microscopy has been used to demonstrate that biocompatible, lubricious poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethylphosphorylcholine) (PMPC) brushes exhibit different frictional properties depending on the medium (methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, and water; the latter also with different quantities of added salt). The chemical functionalization of the probe (amine-, carboxylic acid-, and methyl-terminated probes were used) is not as important as the medium in determining the contact mechanics. For solvents such as methanol, where the adhesion between AFM probe and PMPC brushes is negligible, a l

Biodegradable polymers as encapsulation materials for cosmetics and personal care markets.

The topical and transdermal delivery of active cosmetic ingredients requires safe and non-toxic means of reaching the target sites without causing any irritation. Preservation of the active ingredients is also essential during formulation, storage and application of the final product. As many biologically active substances are not stable and sensitive to temperature, pH, light and oxidation, they require encapsulation to protect against unwanted degradation and also to target specific and controlled release of the active substance. The use of biodegradable polymers as encapsulation materials o

Surface modification of polyurethane towards promoting the ex vivo cytocompatibility and in vivo biocompatibility for hypopharyngeal tissue engineering.

Polymeric substrates with good biocompatibility have been widely employed to create a living construct with the complexities of tissue histology and function in the field of tissue engineering. In this study, poly(ester-urethane) (58213, NAT022) was used to be substrate due to its good physical and chemical properties. Proteins like gelatin or silk fibroin were covalently bonded on its surface using method of diamine aminolysis and glutaraldehyde crosslinking, which had been setup in our group in order to improve poly(ester-urethane)'s hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. The modification was

Organ engineering--combining stem cells, biomaterials, and bioreactors to produce bioengineered organs for transplantation.

Often the only treatment available for patients suffering from diseased and injured organs is whole organ transplant. However, there is a severe shortage of donor organs for transplantation. The goal of organ engineering is to construct biological substitutes that will restore and maintain normal function in diseased and injured tissues. Recent progress in stem cell biology, biomaterials, and processes such as organ decellularization and electrospinning has resulted in the generation of bioengineered blood vessels, heart valves, livers, kidneys, bladders, and airways. Future advances that may

Tissue engineering interventions for esophageal disorders--promises and challenges.

The diseases of the esophagus include congenital defects like atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula as well as others such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), Barrett's esophagus, carcinoma and strictures. All esophageal disorders require surgical intervention and reconstruction with appropriate substitutes. Primary anastomosis is used to treat most cases but treatment of long gap atresia still remains a clinical challenge. Autologous graft therapies using tissues from colon, and small and large intestine or gastric transplantations have been attempted but have constraints like leakage, i

Unfractionated heparin for hemodialysis: still the best option.

Unfractionated heparin (UFH) is the anticoagulant of choice for most maintenance hemodialysis units in the United States. Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) is the norm in Western Europe, but is not approved for this indication in the United States. UFH is likely to remain the agent of choice in the United States because of its relative ease of use, safety, and low cost. Coating tubing and dialyzers with heparin is now possible, but systemic anticoagulation with heparin is usually still required. The additional cost of this innovation does not yet justify its use. Side effects of both UFH and

Rejection of Permacol mesh used in abdominal wall repair: a case report.

Permacol mesh has shown promise when used in abdominal wall repair, especially in the presence of a contaminated surgical field. This biomaterial, derived from porcine dermis collagen, has proposed advantages over synthetic materials due to increased biocompatibility and reduced foreign body reaction within human tissues. However, we present a case report describing a patient who displayed rejection to a Permacol mesh when used in the repair of abdominal wound dehiscence following an emergency laparotomy. Review of the English language literature using PubMed and Medline, showed only two previ

[Preparation of bovine hemoglobin-loaded nanoparticles used as blood substitutes and establishment of reduction system].

Bovine Hb-loaded nanoparticles with modulated size of pores, for use as blood substitutes, were prepared and a nonenzymatic reduction system including two-step-reduction and process optimization was established to control the metHb level in the present study. After the first-step-reduction procedure was performed, the raw BHb, being oxidized severely, was encapsulated to form nanoparticles by the modified double emulsion method. The binary solvent of dichloromethane (DCM) and acetonitrile (Aci) showed properties such as minimizing Hb oxidation and enlarging the pores of nanopartilces. Based on
