Craniomandibular osteopathy in a bullmastiff.

A 6-month-old bullmastiff was presented with bilateral painful swellings of the mandible. Craniomandibular osteopathy was diagnosed based on skull radiographs and histological findings from bone biopsies. Treatment consisted of meloxicam to alleviate the pain. Three months later, the dog was pain free without medication or palpable change in the mandible.

Unusual form of recurrent giant cell granuloma of the mandible and lower extremities in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1.

We report on a girl with familial neurofibromatosis type 1 (Nf1) who at age 11 had multiple osteolytic lesions of the right mandible and the distal femoral and proximal tibial metaphyses bilaterally. No other skeletal component was affected, and no abnormalities were present on skeletal radiographs of her parents. Histologic examination of the mandibular and right femoral lesions revealed a "multinucleated giant cell process." Results of repeated routine laboratory and bone metabolic studies were within normal limits. The lack of reliable histologic criteria and the diagnostic problems in dist

Apparent G syndrome presenting as neck and upper limb dystonia and severe gastroesophageal reflux.

We have studied a 3-month-old boy with severe gastroesophageal reflux, feeding difficulties, neck and upper limb dystonia, abnormal ears, normal genitalia, and anatomically apparently normal larynx and trachea. Initially diagnosed as suffering from Sandifer "syndrome," he was treated with a gastrostomy and Nissen fundoplication. However, his characteristic facial appearance subsequently led to the diagnosis of G syndrome.

[Lesions of the hip in congenital myxedema in children].

A series of 51 cases of congenital myxoedemia in children was analyzed to determine incidence of associated hip lesions. Mechanisms of epiphysial and articular cartilage growth are reviewed and events summarized that occur normally in the "growing hip": the upper femoral nucleus, and orientations of femoral neck and their physiologic variations. The role of thyroid hormones in bone growth is also discussed. Reviewed in greater detail are the myxedematous hips in children, or epiphysial dysgenesis, the causes of delay in bone maturation, the effect of substitutive therapy and mineralization dis

[Etiology and pathogenesis of congenital physical and mental handicaps].

Two to five percent of newborn infants present with congenital structural defects. This incidence contains mostly rare to extremely rare conditions. Aetiologically, these consist of defects secondary to genetic and environmental causes, with a third group of defects which are presumed to be due to an unfavorable combination of genetic and environmental factors. In many individual patients, however, allocation into one of these groups is difficult or even impossible. The following clinical and epidemiologic observations may help in some cases to arrive at a classification; pedigree, pregnancy h

Arthrosis in the elbow joint of young rapidly growing dogs. VI. Interrelation between clinical, radiographical and pathoanatomical findings.

In 106 dogs in which one, two or more of the lesions A: Fragmentation of the coronoid process, B: Fissure of the coronoid process, C: Osteochondritis dissecans of the humeral condyle, or D: Ununited anconeal process, were found at autopsy, comparisons were made between clinical, radiographical and pathoanatomical findings. The 38 dogs which were put to death because of persistent lameness, represented young dogs of larger breeds only, while dogs of which no prehistory regarding foreleg lameness was given, or which had never revealed foreleg lameness, were older and represented dogs of smaller

Effect of four lighting regimes on broiler performance, leg abnormalities and plasma corticoid levels.

The effect of four lighting regimes: (1) continuous light (5 to 10 lux); (2) an intermittent system of 1 hr. of light (5 to 10 lux) and 3 hr. of darkness; (3) an intermittent system of 1 hr. of light (5 to 10 lux) and 3 hr. of darkness interrupted by 13 hr. of regular light (5 to 10 lux); (4) as with (3) but with low intensity light (less than 1 lux) during the 13 hr. period while the intermittent system continued, was studied in 2400 broilers of two commercial crosses over two trials. Lighting regime had a significant effect of body weight in trial 2 with birds on treatments 3 and 4 being lig

Hypervitaminosis A in the dog.

Toxic effects of excessive vitamin A and of excessive vitamin ADE were studied in 9 mixed Labrador Retriever pups. Clinical signs were loss of body weight, dullness, emaciation, roughened coat, evident pain in limb joints, and retarded growth. Radiologic changes were decreases in overall length and thickness of long bones, development of osteophytes, periosteal reaction, and premature closure of epiphyses. Pathologic changes were degenerative epiphyseal plate, hemorrhage and exostotic proliferation of periosteum, fatty liver, and microcalculi in kidney. Toxic effects of excessive vitamin A did

A toddler with severe vitamin D-dependent rickets type 1 A (VDDR1A), hungry bone syndrome, and severe RSV infection: presentation and therapeutic challenges.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D-dependent rickets type 1 A (VDDR1A) is an autosomal recessive disorder due to mutations in the CYP27B1 gene which result in inability to generate 1,25(OH)2D. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-month-old boy with VDDR1A presented with hypotonia and respiratory distress. He had been diagnosed 2 months earlier, having been evaluated for stunted growth, hypotonia, and delayed developmental milestones. He was stabilized with oxygen and bronchodilators for his bronchiolitis and high doses of alfacalcidol, calcium, and phosphate supplements for his hungry bone syndrome. Of note, the pati

Evidence-Based Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Pediatric CKD-Mineral and Bone Disorder (Version 2024).

Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral and Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD) in children refers to the systemic mineral and bone metabolism disorders caused by CKD, including biochemical abnormalities, abnormalities in bone turnover, mineralization, quality, and ectopic calcification. Like the adult patients, mineral metabolism and bone structure abnormalities are universally present in children with CKD. But there have been no guidelines specifically for the children in the past. The medication treatment and clinical practices for children are usually based on those for adults, lacking targeted guidance. On th

Biology of Bone: The Vasculature of the Skeletal System.

Blood vessels are essential for the distribution of oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells, as well as the removal of waste products. In addition to this conventional role as a versatile conduit system, the endothelial cells forming the innermost layer of the vessel wall also possess important signaling capabilities and can control growth, patterning, homeostasis, and regeneration of the surrounding organ. In the skeletal system, blood vessels regulate developmental and regenerative bone formation as well as hematopoiesis by providing vascular niches for hematopoietic stem cells. Here we provide

Bone turnover markers in the early stage of rapidly progressive osteoarthritis of the hip.

OBJECTIVE: Previous reports have demonstrated that patients with end-stage rapidly progressive osteoarthritis of the hip (RPOH) show significantly higher serum levels of bone turnover markers than those with osteoarthritis (OA). However, the characteristics of bone turnover markers in the early stage of RPOH remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the association of bone turnover markers with disease progression in the early stage of RPOH. METHODS: This study included 29 postmenopausal female patients with joint space narrowing >2 mm demonstrated on a series of radiographs and computed

Advanced imaging methods.

Recent developments in imaging sciences have enabled dental researchers to visualize structural and biophysical changes effectively. New approaches for intra-oral radiography allow investigators to conduct densitometric assessments of dento-alveolar structures. Longitudinal changes in alveolar bone can be studied by computer-assisted image analysis programs. These techniques have been applied to dimensional analysis of the alveolar crest, detection of gain or loss of alveolar bone density, peri-implant bone healing, and caries detection. Dental applications of computed tomography (CT) include

The relationship between neonatal developmental dysplasia of the hip and maternal hyperthyroidism.

OBJECTIVE: Development of the hip joint is complete by 11 weeks of gestation. As triiodothyronine and thyroxine are important regulators of early bone and muscle development, we hypothesized that excessive thyroid hormone in the early fetal period was a congenital risk factor of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Consequently, it was proposed that elevations of maternal thyroxine in the first trimester could alter the incidence of neonatal DDH. METHODS: The patient population comprised a retrospective cohort of all children born in Yukiguni-Yamato General Hospital from 1996 to 2003 (n

Scintigraphic findings in progressive diaphyseal dysplasia.

A 14-yr-old white male with a severe form of progressive diaphyseal dysplasia (Engelmann-Camurati disease) was referred to our institution for evaluation of splenomegaly, which is not usually associated with the disease. Our studies included bone-marrow, and liver-spleen scans. These scintigraphic findings, along with the probable cause for splenomegaly, are discussed.

Axial osteomalacia. Clinical, laboratory and genetic investigation of an affected mother and son.

Axial osteomalacia--a rare osteosclerotic bone disorder characterized by axial skeleton pain, coarsening of the trabecular bone pattern on radiographs of the axial but not appendicular skeleton, and osteomalacia on biopsy of a rib or iliac crest--has been reported in 10 apparently sporadic cases, all of which were in middle-aged or elderly Caucasian men. The etiology is unknown but has been postulated to be a bone cell defect. We describe the clinical, laboratory, pathologic and family study of a black mother and son with axial osteomalacia associated with polycystic liver and kidney disease.
